In my opinion one of the main differences that sets apart present day art from historical art is the bright saturated colors which is abundant when it comes to Jeff Sotto’s art. I perceive his art as a combination of cartoony and realism due to the amount of detail in his pieces . The artist seems to be influenced by the bright use of color that you usually see in graffiti. Sotto’s art also has a theme of horror or mystery to it which is a common theme in the movies today.

The image above is a combination of two very completely different subjects. The geisha figure in the middle and the modern aliens that surround showcases the great differences in past Japanese culture and present Japanese culture which is a theme in a lot of Mori’s work. Mori uses their work to exaggerate the change in Japanese culture over time by combining past and present figures.

I believe that the main concepts when it comes to digital effects is using photoshop to “blend” the face to make it appear as if the person has no eyes/mouth.

The images setting is the supermarket or some place where produce is being sold. Each image has one middle aged or young adult; suspended in mid-air as if gravity just turned off. There bodies are positioned as if some shockwave just went through the store. The lighting doesn’t look out of place in any of the images. I believe that the in the series there seems to be a relationship between the people and how their bodies are positioned and the setting, the meaning of this could be that the the grocery/produce stores affect the people in the image in a very strong way and that relationship is shown through there extreme body positions.

Hocks artwork mostly has a single individual in them with common themes such as astronomy and music. Teun Hocks art work gives a “playing dumb” type of humor vibe to it and reminds me of Mr. bean.

The concerns about the environment in Johansson’s work could be that technology is getting in the way of nature and the environment like in the image above. I believe that the narrative to the image created above is the inclusion of technology in nature and how disruptive it can be.

Intertextuality is the idea of connecting different pieces of text which is a theme in Wiley’s work. In their work, Artist Kehinde Wiley, takes historical pictures that often portrayed powerful emperors or rulers from the past and adds a twist to them by removing the historical figures and replaces them with black men from present times. I believe the artist does this as way to portray a minority group as a powerful ruler during a time period in which they were often treated unfairly. I am not sure what the original pieces are called but I do have a good idea as to what they looked like.

I enjoyed the exhibit, there was a sense of minimalism as I walked into a big room with different projects scattered across the room, I also couldn’t help but notice that the color pallet of the overall exhibit also matched the room itself. I thought that the message and the way the artist conveys her message through her work was incredibly unique. Sanding down maps and globes and putting the ashes from the sanding in matching color groups to present the “make-up” of the world was a great way to present her thoughts.

In the series drop dead gorgeous I observed a number of themes when comparing each image. Each image had a women in pain or dead surrounded by a large amounts of food related objects, just like the image above titled “Death by Oreo”. I also noticed that the color pallet used in each picture corresponded to the food that surrounds them . I believe that the message with this series is that over consumption of these items have a negative impact on the women in the picture, or it could be that the products shown are inescapable due to the mass amount of advertising in todays society and the women are suffering because they are overwhelmed. The pictures also remind of an overdose victim.
