I know it’s not Christmas anymore but I wanted to share what Justin’s letter to Santa was for the 22 Minutes’ holiday special in 2011.

The Justin Trudeau Calendar: A Truheart’s View
So yesterday I received the (in)famous JT calendar as a Christmas present from my parents. This wasn’t a big shock, as I had specifically asked for it (in fact, it was the one thing I had asked for specifically). Seeing this in stores and online, I was led to believe this thing was a lighthearted, fangirly piece of fluff.
Well, I was certainly right, for both the good and the bad that that implies.
The pictures are great, and they’re of excellent quality. They’re large, bright, and clear. But there’s an unmistakable element of “sameness” to them. Maybe I’m just spoiled because I have almost 4,000 photographs in my personal Dropbox account (and no, that’s not an exaggeration -- 3,986 as of last count), but it annoys me when the makers of things like this use the same photos of JT over and over. That’s not to say the cliched ones aren’t wonderful -- they absolutely are. But would it kill you to have a little variety?
The photos aren’t my main gripe, though. That lays squarely on the text. Now, I know what you’re probably thinking -- “Katie, it’s a calendar; what the hell do you mean, ‘the text’?” Simply, underneath every month grid is a silly, cheesy quote from the point of view of a JT fangirl, usually having something to do with the photo used for that month. Some of them are all right -- for example, in February it reads “Justin has my whole heart in his hands” to match with the photo of him on a pink background doing a hand heart -- but then there’s others that are nothing short of cringe-y. The most egregious of this is August’s, of which there is a photo of JT making a ridiculous face while a Mountie stands behind him trying not to laugh. The accompanying text reads as follows:
“Silly Justin! Did you just make a ‘poutine’ in front of a Mountie?”
Ugh. Even just typing it makes me uncomfortable. Yes, they actually just made a shit joke in this thing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to kink-shame or anything, but to me it seems overly juvenile, and I’m the kind of person who usually can’t get enough fart and poop jokes.
When I posted the above photo to my Facebook, a friend of mine commented that it reminded her of “an early 2000′s Tiger Beat vibe”. To me, that’s the perfect description of it. Now, before you say, “oh Katie, it’s a parody, where’s your sense of humour?”, I recognize that it’s a parody, but in order to be able to properly parody something, there has to be a certain level of knowledge about the thing or person you’re trying to spoof. You can’t just make any old thing by using Google Images and simple graphic-design and call it parody.
Bottom line? This calendar is okay. I say “okay” because obviously the photos, though cliched, are pretty awesome, and not all the monthly quotes are brain-bendingly stupid. But it’s the ones that are, and the thrown-together aspect of the calendar, that brings it down. If they ever try and do something like this again, I hope they at least consult people that know more about the guy than just what’s on his Wikipedia page, and add a little more variety to the photos.

Prime Minister Trudeau hugging Gary the Unicorn! Video: (X)
I think everyone could use a hug right now. Things are pretty chaotic in the world at the moment, so if you can, please spread kindness and positivity. And, most of all, please stay safe. ♥

I took this on Sunday before the Ottawa Pride Parade. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough time for individual photos or a chat, but hey, he grabbed my arm and grinned at me so I’m calling it a win.
