Of heroes & beauties

“I suppose so.” The black-clothed boy nodded his little head.

“This is usually what happens.” The purple-clothed boy nodded in confirmation.

“So… Will you two little brothers save me?” The white-clothed girl quickly asked for help. Brother Xie Yue also said that men like to be heroes, especially when it comes to being heroes to rescue a beauty in distress. Although she has not seen a “hero” before, she - at least, based on the praises from everyone who had met her Royal Father singing that she will be a future “beauty” - if the two of them are willing to help her, she will force herself to acknowledge them as “heroes.”

After listening to her plea, the purple-clothed and black-clothed boys walked around the white-clothed girl twice. After contemplating for a while, both nodded in agreement.

In his heart, the black-clothed boy recalled his Royal Father telling him that it is better to make a friend rather than an enemy. Today, he needed to just keep his mouth shut to save the white-clothed girl. According to the palace, a life-saving debt must be repaid, it will be to his advantage if he could get her help through this debt in the future.

Her smile caught the purple-clothed and black-clothed boys by surprise because it was rare for them to see such a sweet and beautiful smile.

“Why did you two brothers come here?” the white-clothed girl asked with a sweet and pure smile.

The purple-clothed boy lifted his arms towards the tall tower of Ba Huang Ta. In a deep voice belying his young age, he said, “I heard that this Ba Huang Ta is the tallest building in the kingdom. If I can stand at the top of this tower, I can feel what it is like to step on the kingdom.”

The black-clothed boy smiled gently and said, “This is the only place that I have yet to see.”

“How did you come here?” the purple-clothed boy asked the white-clothed girl.

“This is an airy and quiet place perfect for afternoon naps,” the white-clothed girl answered simply.

After talking, all three of them looked at each other with inexplicable feelings in their hearts. The road ahead is still unclear. These three will be known as the three rulers of the world in the future. Since they are still young, they do not know yet of the tension and excitement of meeting their destined opponents.

“This place is called Ba Huang Ta?” The white-clothed girl’s crisp voice sounded.

“Yes,” the purple-clothed boy answered quickly before his heart suddenly stopped. When he turned to look at the black-clothed boy and their eyes happened to meet, both their hearts jumped as they looked guiltily at the white-clothed girl, hoping that she did not know what they were hiding from her.

“So this is actually Ba Huang Ta!” The white-clothed girl’s face lit up in happiness as she said that. Looking at the purple-clothed and black-clothed boys, she laughed gaily. “I heard that without His Majesty’s permission, anyone who trespasses here will be executed without pardon. Two brothers, is that not true?”

Both purple-clothed and black-clothed boys stared at the white-clothed girl. They had thought she was cute, but how did she turn so cunning in the blink of an eye? She even dared to trick them like that!

“Two brothers, how did you really get here?” The white-clothed girl asked in a sweet voice.

The three children looked at each other for a long time, before…

The purple-clothed boy huffed coldly before pointing at the chicken bones on the ground: This is not ji lan fu rong chicken. A gentlemen’s revenge even ten year’s later is still not too late, the purple-clothed boy thought.

The white-clothed boy laughed lightly like a spring breeze before nodding gently: These are duck bones. A real man should know when to yield and when not to, the black-clothed boy calmly thought.

“Hehe…” The white-clothed girl smiled happily and could not stop nodding her head. “I know that you two brothers must be bluffing me. This place cannot be Ba Huang Ta.” To bully someone is not something that one can boast of, but still, bullying is such a happy thing to do. The white-clothed girl praised herself in her heart with a great sense of achievement. She must relate this incident to Brother Xie Yue so that he would say that he has not taught her military strategy in vain.

The three children looked at each other again and nodded in understanding of their agreement.

Feng Xi Yun weaving a web for Huang Chao & Feng Lan Xi

The scorching sun could not penetrate the dense bamboo forest as the light breeze and bustling sounds of the nature duet in a lovely song.

Entering the bamboo forest, the two young boys felt great relief and let out a deep breath. When they found the other mirroring his own’s action, they both abruptly turned away from each other in annoyance.

It was right at this moment in the depth of the bamboo forest when they heard a slight noise that sounded like a little animal smacking its lips while in deep sleep.

The two boys excitedly turned around, thinking that they could be in luck to catch a little rabbit or a kitten. Despite going round in circles, they could not find any small animals. The sound of smacking lips rang across again, and this time it rang across far more clearly. Forgetting their earlier animosity, both quickly moved towards the sound. After two hundred steps, they came to a sudden stop.

From a distance, they discerned a white marble stone table. Lying on the table in deep sleep was a young girl dressed in white who is five or six years old. On the ground around the table were scattered chicken bones that had been eaten clean. She still had another bone in her mouth that she suckled on as she happily slept.

The purple-clothed and black-clothed boys moved a few steps closer, and despite going a few circles around her, she did not appear to be near waking up. Besides the smacking sounds of her lips, there were no other movements from her. Both of them thought she was very cute. One pulled her black hair that was scattered on the table while the other pulled out a white peony to touch the girl’s face.

The little girl, who was having a sweet dream, felt the pulling of her hair on the scalp and the tickle on her face. Her hand unconsciously tried to wave off the offending objects. Her lips moved and caused the chicken bone to fall out of her mouth, but she still did not rise from her sleep.

The purple-clothed and black-clothed boys found her to be very strange but interesting, so they continued pulling her hair and tickling her face. The white-clothed girl used her sleeves to cover her face and tried to hide her head away as she muttered, “Good brother, do not disturb me. Wait till I catch a ginseng doll to boil chicken soup to cure you.”

“Pu chi!” Upon hearing that, the purple-clothed and black-clothed boys burst into silent laughter.

“Good brother, do not make noise. We must be careful not to scare the ginseng doll, or else we won’t get to eat it,” the white-clothed girl mumbled in her sleep.

Her words silenced them. Looking at the sleeping little girl, they thought that she had a very pleasant face and could not help but want to pinch it. As they made to pinch her face, their hands accidentally touched. They looked at each other in silence, wanting the other to give way so that he would be the first to touch her. Their determined eyes and strong willpower were equal and landed them in a stalemate as neither would give way.

As they slowly retracted their hands, their eyes still remained on her face. They opened their hands and at the same time, two small hands suddenly landed on their target, with them only caring about their speed of attack and not how powerful it was. They heard an “Ouch!” from the white-clothed girl who yelled out in pain as she reflectively raised her hands to catch the “weapons” on her face.

“Si si!” The purple-clothed and black-clothed boys hissed out as they retracted their hands that wanted to pinch her face only to find an additional red mark of five fingers on their fair and tender hands.

The white-clothed girl yawned as she woke up and looked at the purple-clothed and black-clothed boys in confusion. She did not understand why upon waking up, she would find these two people in such a good place where she had been sleeping peacefully for the past two days. Additionally, both of them seemed to be looking at her in resentment.

“I have finished eating the si lan fu rong chicken, and there’s none left for you.” The white-clothed girl blurted out, thinking that the two boys found out that she had stolen the chicken from Yu Shan kitchen and because they did not get to eat any, they were going to complain about her. There were only two such si lan fu rong chicken: one she has filially left in the kitchen for her Royal Father to enjoy (she heard that for His Majesty’s birthday tomorrow, he will be dividing the chicken among the six beautiful consorts in the back palace. She thought that if she became an obedient princess, her Royal Father would be happy enough to give her a portion), the other has ended up in her stomach of course. She, however, has still quietly left a drumstick for her Brother Xie Yue. These two boys were not as good-looking as Brother Xie Yue, so why should they deserve any of the chicken?

The purple-clothed and black-clothed boys went red in the face in anger upon hearing her words. Who wanted her “fu rong” chicken? To actually confused them who are dignified gentlemen with beggars!

Eh? Hang on! Si lan fu rong chicken? The rare chicken known as “Phoenix on the Grounds” that only the Emperor can enjoy and there were just two of them in the world?

Both the purple-clothed and black-clothed boys’ eyes moved towards the clean chicken bones scattered on the ground and stared for a long time before turning to look at the white-clothed girl on the table… Did she actually…

The white-clothed girl was suddenly wide awake and realized what she had just said. Feeling a bit guilty, she slid down the table and stared at the bones on the ground before flatly saying, “These are not chicken bones…”

“According to the law, the punishment is execution,” the purple-clothed boy declared.

“This… really is si lan fu rong chicken?” The white-clothed girl asked hesitantly with an innocent look as her pointed toes made circles on the ground. Brother Xie Yue said before that in the face of a strong attack, one should pretend to be weak to deflect it.

“This really is the si lan fu rong chicken that only the Emperor can enjoy,” both the purple-clothed and black-clothed boys confirmed as they looked sympathetically at the white-clothed girl.

“What should I do? Will I be beheaded?” The white-clothed girl asked tearfully as she twisted her dress and looked up at the purple-clothed and black-clothed boys who were half a head taller than her. Brother Xie Yue also said that a girl’s tears can let the girl wrap a guy around her fingers. Even though she did not understand what “wrapping around her fingers” mean, she had seen how her Royal Father’s consorts would look tearfully at him, and with her intelligence, this skill was not something difficult for her to learn.

You can catch the world, but not this dream

After the banquet, Huang Chao and Yu Wu Yuan continued with making battle preparations for Hua Wang.

Both men sat quietly for a moment as they looked at each other with bitterness in their hearts.

“How could it be her?” Huang Chao finally broke the silence.

Yu Wu Yuan only smiled with his eyes trained on the walls as if there was something there for him to study untiringly. 

“Feng Guo’s Princess Xi Yun… The current female Wang of Feng Guo… How could it be Bai Feng Xi? How could that bold and unrestrained snow moon white-clothed Feng Xi be the ruler of a country?” Huang Chao muttered in disbelief.

But the white shadow in the air, the female ruler in armor standing at the tower really is her. Even if he were to live to a hundred years old and his eyesight is failing, he will never recognize wrongly that pair of clear eyes, that elegantly handsome face with the snow-white crescent jade on her forehead.. That really is Bai Feng Xi ah!

Friends rarely last for a lifetime

Hearing Bai Feng Xi’s firm rejection of his proposal, Huang Chao’s mouth tightened as he stared at her for a long time before finally letting out a sigh and turning away to look into the darkness. He said, “ For this world, I must marry Hua Chun Ran. This is my only way to get this world.”

“Ai, it is about the world again,” Bai Feng Xi sighed. “Huang Chao, since we met in Nan Guo, I have always regarded you as a hero. And a hero will not resort to such means.”

“I am not a hero, Feng Xi, you are mistaken.” Huang Chao turned back towards her. With determined eyes and coldness on his face, he declared, “I am not a hero. I am the King.”

Bai Feng Xi gazed into his eyes. Her heart was shaken leaving her speechless.

“To become a hero, he must be highly skilled in martial arts, be open-minded about matters of life and death, be tolerant, and be undefeated in a battle or a hundred or a million battles.  He would be a god admired by all.” Huang Chao ticked off all that is required of a hero on his fingers one by one.

“But I, I have decided to be the King.  Becoming the King requires compromises, planning, choices, decisions..  Someone who fights hundreds and thousands of battles, and even battles the whole world. I want to be the King. I want to hold the whole world in my very own hands. To hold this world, I need power, lots of power. That is why I need to be strong. I need to do everything I can to become powerful. To become the most powerful King in this world.” Huang Chao solemnly had his arms outstretched as if to embrace the whole world.

As Bai Feng Xi looked at Huang Chao who was bathed in the moonlight, she thought that he was currently half in the light and half in the darkness.  He sounded as if he would swallow the whole world, will he be able to rightly hold the whole world instead? He has lost something very precious in his heart. Is it so destined for him to lose it?

Suppressing the chaos in her heart and the sudden chill she felt, she unconsciously wrapped her arms around herself. In such troubled chaotic times, unscrupulous strategy planning is needed to dominate the world. He is like that, everyone else is like that. Is there anyone in this world who does things without expecting any benefits in return? To do something because it is what the heart desires?

“In comparison with the world, I am not even worth mentioning.” Bai Feng Xi held up the two bottles of wines. “In men’s hearts such as yours, supreme status and power surpass everything.”

“Feng Xi, did you really reject me because I will have a lot of wives.  Or, is it because your heart already has someone in it?” Huang Chao finally asked Bai Feng Xi who was about to leave.

Bai Feng Xi looked at the bottles of wine. The night wind blew her long hair over to cover her eyes, but her slight smile was still evident with traces of loss, helplessness and sadness.

“Someone in my heart, there could be someone, or there might not be. But…  Regardless of my heart, whether it’s to become wangfei or the Empress, I will not marry you! Because…”

Huang Chao did not look angry.  Instead, he raised his eyebrow, imploring her to continue.

“Because you are just a friend.” Bai Feng Xi looked into Huang Chao’s eyes as she whispered. Yes, as an enemy, this person is too strong.  As a lover, he will be a physical and emotional burden. It is only by becoming friends, friends who are kept at a distance, this is the best resolution.

Huang Chao smiled as he stretched out his hands to hold Bai Feng Xi’s shoulders.  This time, she did not avoid him. “Since I was born, I have not encountered any setbacks. You are the first.”

Bai Feng Xi took in his calm expression and smiled. “It could be soon that you will again taste defeat from another woman.”

Huang Chao’s mis-proposal

In the middle of the night when the moonlight was faint, Bai Feng Xi flew onto the rooftop as she carried two bottles of wine and hummed a happy tune while thinking about the person she was going to meet.  Before she could react, a shadow suddenly flashed by and a figure stood right in front of her.

“Huang Chao?”  She called out in surprise upon seeing him.

“It is I.”  The purple-robed Huang Chao confirmed.

Bai Feng Xi looked at him and asked, “Are you looking for me?”

“Yes.”

“So what is this about?” Bai Feng Xi asked as she put down the bottles of wine on the roof and sat down.

Huang Chao moved two steps closer, gazing at her who was shrouded in the darkness of the night.  After staring at her, he finally said, “I have come to ask you again before you head to Mount Tian Zhi if you are willing to marry me.”

Bai Feng Xi burst into a chuckle.

“Feng Xi, I am very serious.”  Huang Chao knelt in front of her with eyes brighter than the stars and hotter than the sun.

Bai Feng Xi continued chuckling as she gazed at the handsome face with the moonlight highlighting his solemnness.  

“Since you are serious, I will ask you one question in all seriousness as well: If I agree to marry you, you cannot marry anyone else.  In this lifetime, you can only have I as your wife.  Are you willing?”

Huang Chao was silent for a long time. 

“Hehe….  You don’t have to answer.  I know that this is something you cannot do.”  Bai Feng Xi laughed softly as she patted Huang Chao’s shoulder and stood up.  “You already have someone else whom you are trying by all means to marry.”

“Feng Xi, no matter how many women I marry, you will be the most special one.” Huang Chao stood up and gripped her shoulders.

Bai Feng Xi brushed his hands off and looked into the distance.  “Huang Chao, you and I are from different worlds.  You can have a lot of women regardless of you liking or not liking them.  For me, I only want someone whom I love and will love only me.”  

“Feng Xi, I may end up marrying a lot of women, but my main wife, and when I become the Emperor in the future, my Empress will undoubtedly be you.” Huang Chao reached out to grab Bai Feng Xi’s hand. “Become my Empress.  I, Huang Chao, dare swear to Heaven that I will love you till the end of this lifetime.” 

“I believe that you will do what you say you will do, but…” Bai Feng Xi smiled. “My husband must only have me as his wife.  His heart and body can only belong to I alone.”

-  Would Huang Chao have sung a different tune if he knew Bai Feng Xi was actually Princess Feng Xi Yun who will inherit the rich Feng country?  He was blinded in his quest to marry another princess for power.  Because of this, he lost to Hei Feng Xi who gave up power for love, albeit at the very last moment, but still not too late compared to Huang Chao who totally missed Bai Feng Xi.  Alas!

Since then, there has been many rumours.  Some said that Bai Feng Xi admires Xi Wang's grace and handsomeness, and that's why she has taken him away to become her husband.  Some said that Xi Wang abandoned his throne to follow Bai Feng Xi because he was captivated by her beauty.  Some said that Bai Feng Hei Xi are really Feng Wang and Xi Wang, but because they fear the might of Huang Wang, they chose to run away.  Some even said that they could not bear the people's sufferings and so, chose to abandon the country to live in isolation in the mountains.  

Legends are abound whether in the jianghu or among the common folks.  There is always a lot of stories about the two of them.  There is always a lot of speculations on what happened that day.  However, all these remain only as legends.

That day was recorded in history books in one sentence: On the third day of the second month in the nineteenth year, Feng Wang and Xi Wang left the country.

Legend or history.  Beautiful or slanderous stories.  Neither can match what was really felt by the thousands in the army who witnessed their departure.

Such arresting and dashing figures floating gracefully up in the sky.  How could anyone think of "escape" for such a word can only bring the meaning of shame? 

The blue sky, the bright sun, a white silk that bound them together..  They were just like a pair of lovebirds flying together, like the dragon and the phoenix!

A monumental change is happening, and he really felt as if he was ripped off.  He cannot wait to eat that woman's meat.  

"Hee ...... Are you, by any chance, thinking of me?"  A chuckle made him look up to see a carefree white-clothed person with flowing long black hair sitting on the windowsill.  Isn't that the person he was currently hating?

His anger suddenly disappeared and he was instead filled with a certain calmness that he had not felt before.  He glanced at her and asked, "I thought that you are happily transversing the jianghu.  What are you doing here?"     

The person sitting on the windowsill leaned forward and flashed him a brilliant smile, "Black Fox, after I left, I found out that I forgot to do one thing.  If I did not do it, even when I die, I will still regret it."
