Today, I decided to do something I’ve never done before. My longest run prior was 13 miles but today flew by with the Portland running group I’ve been training with for my time being in Oregon.

It took a lot to leave the couch and v important snuggle sesh with this pup to get out the door and run what my training plan called “30 easy miles.” Like that’s a thing.
But I gave our dog one last kiss on her forehead and headed out the door. Kept the legs on cruise control. Sustainable. Easy. Never pushing it. Tried to be really present. Soaked up the sun and dry sidewalks after weeks running through snow.
And you know what? It paid off. So much so that in the joy of the final mile, I clocked a 7:59. And it felt friggin’ fantastic.
Two weeks until race day ✨

The boy I liked in college would always invite me over at night to do homework or play video games or make grilled cheese, it was always something different. And sometimes I’d lay with him while he watched videos for his biology class and play with his hair. And he’d always complain when the videos were long but I was genuinely always so happy when they were, because I just liked being with him. And for the length of those videos it was just me and him with the lights off not even talking at all. But then they’d end and it’d be late and he would call his girlfriend to say goodnight and I would walk home to my apartment downstairs. Because reality is a lot messier than a 20 minute video about cells.

ok can we agree that the WORST feeling is when you’re just sitting around consciously procrastinating and you’re just overly aware that each second that passes is more time wasted and you like watch hours pass and you’re STILL procrastinating and you CANT STOP and your panicked brain is trapped inside a body that refuses to be productive and inside you’re screaming but outwardly you’re just eating chips

Today’s post-race celebrations consisted of walking into the shower with my race clothes on and sitting down, letting the hot water defrost my body. I counted my blessings on the floor of the shower and felt just… happy. What a RACE, YOU GUYS. The Boston Marathon decided to bring a total downpour with it today, complete with cold temps (coldest in 30 years!) and brutal headwinds. But after crossing the finish line and earning a shiny new 45-second PR and a BQ for 2019, I am so happy and thankful for every second of it. Even though my gels shrunk to basically nothing (?!?) and I was soaked through a half mile in, I confronted that nasty voice in my head telling me to stop or slow down. This training cycle was all about confidence and I had to pull that out in full force today. Confidence in my training and gratitude to be a part of the race. And it worked!
I’m sitting in my PJs on a couch, and my wonderful, incredible, superstar of a fiance is out getting soup and cheesecake for dinner. Sore, but nothing hurt. I have blood in my fingers again. Toenails all in place. I wish I could somehow thank every volunteer — the one whole helped me wrap a space blanket around me when I couldn’t stop shivering, the one who yelled, “Go Stephanie Butzer of High Point, NC!”, the one who told me that badass-ery beats weather every time. I can’t believe so many spectators, volunteers and emergency personnel stood in the rain all those hours for us. It’s an incredible honor and I tried to thank as many as I could. And the city of Boston — thank you for this ever-challenging race. Races like this make me feel alive!! I’ll be back again ❤️
