tw implied rape, sa, csa
so this started as a form/anatomy study and then it turned into vent art and then sometime after that it became thg fan art. and Then my boyfriend said “this looks like trans dysphoria art” so you can take this drawing literally however you’d like lmao
anyway. sa and csa is a Bitch. and despite how many people talk about it regarding Finnick i don’t think it’s enough. the weight of being raped on an annual basis and what that has to do to his mental state and how he view himself is something that cannot be over stated. especially at such a young age while his body is still growing and he’s still trying to figure it out.
how being objectified and sexualized completely dehumanizes you. (the sexualization of him and his body starting at 14 btw) feeling both like he has to prove he’s still a human but becuase there’s nothing he can do to stop it, letting it happen. not bothering with trying to convince himself or others he deserves to be treated like a living thing becuase no one is going to change their mind on how they see him. how they want to view and consume him. there isn’t anything he can do to show them he’s human. the only person he can convince of that is himself, and that’s exhausting.
does he fight to remind himself of his humanity? stand up for himself when you can? reclaim his bodily autonomy? or does he give up? and how the hell is he supposed to do that at 16?

No but the Hunger Games really said "what do you hate more- the atrocities or the people who commit them against you? Because like it or not there IS a difference. If you hate the people who commit acts of pure evil more than you hate the acts themselves, what will stop you from becoming just like your enemies in your pursuit of justice? What will keep you from commiting those very same acts against THEM when the opportunity arises? And what then? The cycle of pain and suffering will never stop. Round and round it'll go. Nothing will ever change. But. BUT. If you hate the atrocities. If you hate the vile, senseless acts MORE than you hate the people who did them to you. If you are able to see that evil is evil regardless of who does it... The cycle ends with you. No, you may never get justice. But you will never be responsible for making others, even your enemies, suffer the same crimes you have. The atrocities will never be committed by you, never by your hand. And that's the way you change the world. It's the ONLY way" and that's why I am sure it will never stop being one of the most relevant works of fiction ever created

Reading Mockingjay as an adult is extra devastating because. Of course the plucky teenager and her ragtag friends aren't going to sneak into a government building to kill the president with a bow and arrow. That's absolutely ridiculous. It's the kind of thing that's only possible in the kind of propaganda that Coin developed. But she's so good at it that in some ways she tricks the reader into thinking that's the kind of story this is, too--even after 3 books reminding us that pretty much everything that Katniss does the second she volunteers is manipulated by adults pulling strings to make propaganda in some form or another.

Katniss is such an unreliable narrator. She says "Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of District 12 as a place that cares about me" girl you deliver strawberries to the Mayor, you hunt and trade for the district, when you fell at Prim being chosen someone caught you, when you went to Prim people parted for you, when you volunteered EVERYONE stopped. Idk how to tell you but I think you're a pillar of the community.

Sorry but the Haymitch's dynamic with his final two tributes. will never not fuck me up.
Katniss: He hates hates hates her for being the same as him. He can communicate with her because she is the same as him. He's her mentor, of course he cares about her. He should be a father figure to her but he's too stunted by his own trauma so they exist like teenage allies in the never-ending arena which is a victor's life. He wants to keep her safe but she must also be a pawn in the rebellion. She makes him make promises he cannot keep. She is all that he could have been and he is all that she might be.
Peeta: The sacrificial lamb. The one Haymitch knows he can't keep. The boy who is better than the rest but must be condemned to die time and time again. Who demands that Haymitch saves Katniss, as Katniss demands that he saves Peeta, but Haymitch could not save Maysilee, or his family, or his girl. Everyone Haymitch has ever lost compressed into a single body and placed beside Katniss, so he is forced to look at her as his mirror.

idk something doesn’t quite sit right with me with the common headcanon that finnick and mags overplayed annie’s condition to help protect her and discourage the capitol from focusing on her. i’m not trying to start any sort of arguments or debate rn just thinking out loud bc like. what if it isn’t being overplayed. can’t we have a very visibly mentally ill woman. annie dissociates and cries in public and laughs at strange moments and physically reacts to her flashbacks by closing her eyes and covering her ears, all in public, all even in front of people she doesn’t know personally, and i think that should just. be ok with the fandom. while it’s a sweet mentality and i can see why people believe it, there shouldn’t have to be some ulterior motive behind any of her actions or how she portrays herself.
also. we as readers learn more about the victors at the same time as katniss, essentially providing us with how victors are seen in the eyes of the audience vs how they really are without the cameras. and in that earlier perspective, there are victors who are visibly affected by their trauma: haymitch and chaff drink, and the victors from d6 use morphling, and annie is “insane.” we learn later that they’re all broken, both bc katniss gets closer to them but also bc they go through even more trauma: finnick is barely holding on in d13 before annie’s rescue, and johanna is angry not just bc that’s her personality but also bc she’s in so much pain, and she eventually turns to morphling.
and just. idk. everyone else is able to keep up a facade that the capitol is willing to put up with if not outright use, and those who can’t keep that facade up become addicted to something that keeps them docile: the morphlings may not be outright usable, but at least they’re too out of it to do anything, and chaff seems to generally be a positive presence (at least in the eyes of the capitol), with or without alcohol. and johanna, while not abusing any substances until d13, (eventually) constructed a coping mechanism that was deemed palatable: with her family gone, she became angrier and more aggressive, both bc she had nothing to lose but also as a reaction to her trauma, and in the audience’s eyes anything she says or does can be brushed off as “oh that’s just angry johanna, she used to be such a crybaby but she sure fooled us, she’s so tough and feisty!” it’s all just a part of her shtick to them.
and even wiress, who has her peculiarities and is later broken further by the blood rain, is “useful” and invents in her spare time. hell, even haymitch manages it: sure, he tends to be very aggressive and grumpy, but that’s not what the audience sees. to them, he’s comedic. he’s the bumbling fool who arrives late to the reaping, yells some drunken stuff about how he likes the new tribute, messes with the escort, then falls off the stage. caesar even brings it up during katniss’s interview, and when the cameras pan to haymitch he goodnaturedly waves it away then turns the attention back to katniss
the only one we know of who can’t manage to reign in their symptoms in a way that the capitol can use to their advantage is annie. she’s also the only one aside from maybe wiress who we see really display the mental impacts in a way that is commonly thought of as “insane.” and i don’t think that has to be a problem, at least to fans.
#real as hell!!#annie is mentally ill and that’s not all she is but it’s not a bad thing either#mental illness is a part of who you are#it shapes everthing you do but it also doesn’t have to define you#it can be both#annie is her own capable wonderful person#and that’s not made more or less because of her mental illness#obviously if you have ptsd and schizophrenia you’re going have issues#and those issues can be a part of your identity and who you are#without it being the only thing that shapes you#thank you op ily

Saying Peeta “will never love Katniss the same way” is ableist and I shouldn’t have to elaborate but I will.
1). Of course he doesn’t love her the same way. He fell in love with her as a child. As they grew up, he (probably) held onto an idealized view of her, as he only got to love her from afar. But, over all their time together in catching fire, their first growing together, he got to know her as a real person. Doubly so after their second growing together after mockingjay. He doesn’t love her in the puppy love innocence of childhood anymore, nor is it in the burning crush way of teenage love. When he falls back in love and works through the hallucinations and delusions, it’s a much more holistic picture of Katniss. I don’t love my wife the same way I did nearly 9 years ago when we first met. It’s deeper, richer, and altogether more than it was in the beginning, as it should be.
2). Whatever Peeta’s condition post-hijacking would be labeled by a psychiatrist is neither here nor there, and I’m not a psychiatrist so I cannot say, but based on the information we have and some of my research, it’s a form of substance induced psychosis. Tracker jacker venom is a hallucinogen, deliberately designed to fuck with you and cause bad trips. Psychedelics can trigger psychosis and can unlock schizophrenia. Whether Peeta would’ve developed something like schizophrenia or borderline personality disorder or any number of other things without the hijacking, this is where he is after mockingjay. He does not have amnesia. His memory wasn’t wiped like Bucky in the winter soldier. Katniss tells us he’s more or less back to normal, just sometimes has flashbacks/hallucinations/delusions that make him grip a chair. Honestly, considering everything, pretty damn good.
3)He’s changed. Fundamentally changed. War and love both will do that to a person. But to say he’s not himself, that he’ll never be himself, is ableist. Saying people with ““scary”” mental illnesses cannot fully love as purely as someone without those illnesses is ableism, and yeah, this is a book, but people with these illnesses exist in the real world. Peeta is disabled, and he acquired disability, he was not born with disability. That changes you, of course it does. But saying that he’s lost himself permanently isn’t only explicitly going against the text of the book but also telling all the disabled people in your life and on the internet that they’re a shadow of their former selves. That they’re ruined and broken.
Peeta isn’t ruined or broken or too damaged to love and be loved. He’s just different. And that’s okay. He’s still the same person. He’s the person Katniss fell in love with. He’s her dandelion, the boy with the bread, and the father of her children. Do you honestly think that Katniss would settle? If Peeta didn’t love her back, do you think she’d have children with him?
Think about the people in your own life. If they developed mental illness, would you really love them less? Would you constantly doubt their own love for you? If you wouldn’t, why do you doubt Peeta? And if you would, you need to look inward and ask yourself why.

Not enough people talk about this moment in Catching Fire.
Peeta immediately recognizes the sound of Gale getting whipped and considering how we know his mother is abusive, this can only mean that Peeta and his brothers must have been whipped often enough for him to recognize it even from a distance.
God, there are so many details hidden in the background like this. It amazes me and says so much about how good of a writer Suzanne Collins is, but this detail in particular breaks my heart.
Peeta goes through so much in his life and yet he still chooses to be kind.

They curled around each other and traded sticky sweet kisses, the zing of citrus clinging to their fingers, perfuming the air. Finnick would frequently joke with Annie that the oranges from the tree on her lawn tasted far better than the ones from his, which is why he came over so much.
absolutely Obsessed with this finnick & annie commission done by the talented @charlunday !! they took my idea and ran with it so thoughtfully and beautifully ( the flanagan pattern on finnick’s sweater?? their gold earrings?? annie’s perfectly arched dancer feet???? ) i am in love 💕 everyone should run to commission them!

peeta tried to save him and katniss by saying she had a baby, because he knew that would pull at the capitals heart strings. In a dystopian society, peeta mellark knew the capital would care more about a fetus than the real dying children . this sounds oddly familiar
