A very self indulgent James and Cyprian relationship “analysis”

I am actually obsessed with their relationship as essentially this is another case of [insert character a] living in [insert character b]’s story if this didn’t happen or if the circumstances were different (This is seen with Will and Katherine)

In this case, Cyprian is living in what would have been James’s story if he wasn’t chased out of the hall at 11. He would’ve be the hall’s greatest star and perhaps even a steward by the time Will entered the story. He would’ve viewed Marcus and Cyprian as his brothers not his replacements and would’ve probably held the same resentment Cyprian has for Justice.

But of course, this isn’t the case. James was chased out of the hall and was replaced by Cyprian.

This dynamic of being raised by the same man at different times is very fascinating to me. On one hand, Cyprian views Jannick as strict but still a good father, and James views Jannick as a dad who hated him in the end and replaced him despite the fact he tried his best to make him proud. (The gate scene at the end of dark heir where James wonders if his father would be proud of him at that moment.)

The resentment James has for Cyprian and Marcus is very, VERY evident in little snarky comments and his actions. I am convinced some of his rage towards Marcus in the prologue is resentment for him being replaced, and his little comment calling out Jannick and the Stewards for not telling the noviates anything about the cup is very passive aggressive to Cyprian. (“Not even your precious little adopted son?” - James) It’s understandable James is upset, his father threw him out and plucked two replacement children who he valued more this his own biological son.

Cyprian’s side of the story is quite tragic as well. Hes the best in the hall, but is he the best truly because he is or because James isn’t here? Cyprian is constantly striving for perfection because of one reason; acceptance. I wouldn’t say Cyprian is scared of bring thrown out because he’s not a reborn so there’s no real reason to throw him out, but he desires his father’s approval and he wants to make him proud. This work clearly pays off because both Will and Violet comment how perfect Cyprian is (Will going as far to call him a teacher’s pet I love him for that.)

When you put these two together, nothing goes well. Its pretty much adding a gallon of gasoline to the fire. James is constantly reminded of the boy he’s been replaced with plus his father’s favourite son and Cyprian has to see the boy he’s been working so hard to fill in for, plus the man who kidnapped his brother. Both of them resent the other. Yet, at the same time, they try and reach out to the other. James constantly calling Cyprian little brother and trying to strike up a conversation. Cyprian looking weird when James is called Anharion. Its clear that while they may not like each other, they recognize a part of themselves in the other. Cyprian sees himself in James because he recognizes that once, James also pushed himself to exhaustion after every training session. James sees himself in Cyprian because he was once his father’s pride and joy too.

So, this post can be summed up in a few words.

God fucking damn it Jannick.

Can we talk about Marcus for a second…

(Kind of self indulgent and probably doesn’t make much sense)

He’s the character that’s constantly brought up, yet we know little to nothing about him. Who he was before getting kidnapped, what his relationship with Cyprian looked like, how he and Justice interacted and so much more.

Sure we have little glimpses of these, such as his journal and little mentions by Cyprian, James and Justice, but we don’t know what he was truly.

I think the cherry on top is truly that we have no idea what he looks like. We have trading cards for a bunch of other characters yet no actual description of Marcus. I don’t remember much of the text describing him.

In every sense, he really is a shadow. Something that always follows you around, but you don’t really know anything about it.

I’m aware that book three will not have any Marcus chapter’s because well, he’s dead, but if there is any information about Marcus you bet I will scream like how I did when I read page 170.

(bonus points if cyprian is like “yk i once saw justice and marcus kiss.”)

I have hope for Violet Ballard

Can we talk about how Violet went from completely distrusting Will to having a period of denial when Visander tells her that Will is the enemy? Her character development is so sweet yet so tragic. She went from refusing to free Will of his shackles on the Sealgair to mentally protecting Will's image. You could see how downright hurt she was when she realised Will was the Dark King and hadn't told her.

What kinda disappoints me is that Violet didn't give Will even a tiny chance after she realised what he was. Will has proven himself to her time and time again, yet she chooses to believe Visander's every word after seeing Will using his powers. I get that she's younger than some of the others, but it is still a punch in the throat.

However, Violet seems to be better at thinking than some of the others, and less 'brainwashed' persay. Cyprian seems to be blinded by the Steward perspective (which is understandable since he was born into the Hall) and Elizabeth is too young to really look between the lines (after all, her only ideas of Will are that he had snuck out, killed Katherine & lied about his identity).

It's the line "Later, she’d remember that Will had been the only one talking about stopping the army, while the rest of them were caught up in old feuds" that convinces me Violet will be the sensible one and at least try to convince the others that Will is not trying to follow Sarcean's footsteps.

(Kind of rambling) This is probably way too ooc but… I don’t think you all understand I NEED Cyprian to realize the light side are all losers and apologize to Will.

I NEED him to find out the reason Ettore survived for so long was because that he let himself give into wine and be himself and Cyprian starts drinking, not to the point he’s an alcoholic or even that he drinks a lot but if it’s like a party or something he’ll drink a couple of shots.

I NEED him to admit that the stewards were a bit culty (Albeit he’ll probably break down when he realizes this which is normal) and to admit Jannick sucks. Like actually. I hate Jannick, but I am holding out hope his wife is an angel.

Above all else, I just need Cyprian to accept the fact that the world isn’t black and white. To finally realize that life isn’t as it seems. To realize that you can still have high morals and go against what is told.

It’s either this, or we revive the noviate trio and let them have their own novel (Its not a Juvive post without the noviate trio)

I think dark rise three would be funny if Will, James and maybe even Violet walk into a bar and see Cyprian passed out drunk with Grace beside him looking tired.

And Cyprian drunkly begs Will for forgiveness. And calls James brother and cries a little bit. And also sob in Violet’s arms and call her beautiful.

Then he wakes up the next day with a massive hangover and James laughing his ass off at him.

I think Dark Rise/Heir could easily become a comedy if Sarcean was able to communicate with Will in his mind.

And not like the memories of the past things, actually having full on conversations with Will. Just imagine it for a second:
