Project Statement Semester 2
For this semester, I decided to explore everyday aspects of my current life (such as commuting, socializing) that either involve movement or can be captured using a form of movement ( e.g motion blur in photography, expressive mark making)
My three electives are PFV, Painting and Printmaking.

Printmaking- Potato prints (25/2/21)
I decided to try the workshop in experimenting with potatoes to create printing stamps. I found it hard cutting into the potato, but in the end I believe I made the potatoes dynamic in pattern, making each potato identifiable.

Printmaking- Printing with a leaf ( finger print marks) (25/2/21)
Printmaking using available acrylic colours to create imagery using a leaf from my room. I decided the cadmium yellow and red would be a nice combo visually to experiment with.
I decided to also use the paint on my hands to see how my fingerprints would print on the page.

Printmaking- experimenting with sea shells ( 24/2/21)
For printmaking I decided to experiment with seashells. I used collected sea shells and acrylic to see what sort of marks I could make for print making. I found certain shells presented very little information for the page but flatter shells with indents were more visible on the page but still not entirely recognisable.

Printmaking- using packets from my room for marks ( 23/2/21)
Experimenting with acrylic paint and a packet from my room to create marks. I found the indents at the top of the packet used for opening the packet made interesting marks.

Painting figures- 22/2/21
After researching Egon Schiele I decided to use my figure drawing to practice with colour.
For my self portrait of me licking a tree I decided to try a heavy watercolour base, followed by gouache. I thought the portrait would be fun to recreate and I liked the technique I used to approach the painting. I experimented with a brush from my dads shed to create the red strokes and tree marks.
For my second portrait, I decided to follow the drawings I did of my boyfriend to recreate a stylistic version of him with the blue hair and beard. I used watercolour and blue ink. This one feels more Egon Schiele like.
For my third drawing I did a quick sketch of my house mate cooking and experimented with promarker and blue ink. I think they interact well with each other.

Painting statement
For my painting elective, I have decided to get factors of my current everyday life that I have photographed to engage with the painting workshops. This theme of current everyday life involves capturing the lack of movement in my life at the moment or creating physical movement with the mediums I use.

After watching Eoins workshop on making paper I decided to try make it. I used 2 different spreads of newspaper and used kitchen roll and pva glue mixed with water to try create a creased surface. I have to experiment on the surface itself.

Painting Elective- 15/2/21
My attempt at creating a home made tool for my painting elective. I had to collect sticks from outside and only one was sturdy enough to make something out of so I made it double sided with a rag at one end, and pieces from a sweeping brush at the other side. I found the hairs were too delicate making it a difficult task but when I applied the ink to the page first than worked into it I found that method helped with my mark making.
I think both sides left interesting and energetic marks that show movement.

My recent research on suggested British artist John Virtue, who captures and creates monochromatic landscapes.

Opinion from text above:
I am fascinated by these landscapes. I think within them, there’s an energy that is very unique, that only Virtue can create as he recreates his scenery. I love that with the medium, the movement and the energy it creates a moody and potentially dark atmosphere. I’d life to study his use of negative and positive spaces. I think it creates interesting composition and energy. The atmospheric nature is what draws me to these pieces.

Painting research- Egon Schiele ( 11/2/21)
My research into famous figurative artist Egon Schiele.
Opinion text from above:
I really like Schiele as a figurative artist as I feel like he was really ahead of his time. I especially love his fluid figurative style of figure drawing. It reminds me of the gesture drawings that I have been doing. I especially love the colour and character of his pieces. There’s real character in them making them dynamic and pleasing to the eye. I love observing how he does portraiture and hands, it inspires me to involve more portraiture into my theme.

Experimenting with coffee over ink-11/2/21
I decided once the ink pieces dried that I would pour different consistencies of coffee over the images to create contrast within the pieces. I put them on a tray and allowed them to dry in the oven at a low temperature.
I like the final results and I think it adds to the drawings.

Experimenting with ink- ( 10/2/21)
I decided to experiment with ink on the 2 sketches I did, I liked how these turned out. I decided to be more expressive with the second one and to experiment with what marks I could make.
Coffee:
I also decided to do this quick coffee sketch of me.

Sketches- 10/2/21
After the gesture drawing workshop I decided to not only practice figure drawing but I also did sketches for my ideas development of my boyfriend. My student accommodation has been empty and to take a break from working on art based on myself I decided to draw him.
I may do something with the 2 bigger sketches.
