Gregory crewdson is an american photographer, best known for his large scale production to capture images of small town america.
I like crewdson work because of the way he creates narratives in his images by using a mixture of people, locations of small town in america and lighting provided by a large crew fimilar with motion picture production. He creates these elaborate stages to capture images filled with story that makes the viewer ask “what is happening?”.
To me credwson is one of the best examples of a photographer showing narrative in thier work.
A series of photo’s i call “Growing out of focus”, as the year has progressed the continued lockdowns and being stuck in inside with little human interactions has caused me to be more introspctive and focus on myself, thus changing on how i view myself(focus) becoming more abstract and blurry as i question myself on deeper and abstract things with it eventually becoming so muddled that i am merely a smear in the frame showinhg how changed my thoughts and focus are now.
A repeat video i made called Bad Dream. It explores my experience of being stuck at home over quarantine and my feelings around it.
The overall narrative of the video is how being stuck at home has caused my day to day become a repeat of themselves with very little variations to it, and my growing confusion on how quickly it has happened without me being aware of it and my frustration towards it once realisation sinks in of how im stuck in my home.
For exploring the theme of story telling I have decided to explore it through Photography,Film and Video.
I am exploring the theme of story by creating photographs that resembles cinematic stills that make you ponder the narrative within them.Creating pieces that have no over arching theme but leave it open to the viewer to allow each piece to create a unique story for them.
My video attempts to also do the same thing, a piece with no over arching theme in it but open enough to allow the viewer to create meaning from it.
In my work i have focused on replicating the works of artist such as Gregory crewdson, Bruce gilden or Edward hopper. As these artist works use lighting and narrative frequently, with many of them using unique staging/lighting to create narrative pieces that inspire me.
My photo works such as this, this or this are all examples of my attempt at creating unique images that use staging or lighting to allow the viewer to make and view the story within them. My video work attempt the same thing.
Bruce gilden is a American street photographer known for his candid close-up photo’s of people in New york using his flash gun.
I really like his photo’s because of his use of his flash gun creating surreal but incredibly detailed photo’s of people that seem to present a real version of them self’s. The fact that his photo’s are candid seems the add to this, leaving the person no time to present themself in a manner they deem okay.
I also like Mr Gildens work because while his photo’s are candid they almost all create a narrative in them, there always seem’s like there a story happening in them and we get to view it.
A digitial work i created from editing photo’s together to add to the atmosphere, i was inspired by an artists named sean mundy https://t.co/I1KiiLEwfY?amp=1 this is a link to where you can see some of his works. I think this piece came out fine, i hope to improve my skills with photoshop and krita so i can make images like this more realistic.
A little photoshoot I did over the week, I was inspired by gregory crewdson and his use of lighting in his photography and the story he try's to construct in them. I gonna try to do more work that's inspired by his over the coming weeks seeming how lighting can help in playing into the narrative of the story.
Francessca woodman was a name that pop up a couple times throught this semster, intrigued i gave a look a her work and was quite happy with what i found. Her work is very deep and requires you to question which i quite like, and she usually use’s herself as the model which is something i also do out of convenice. In reflection i think some og my works have drawn inspiriation from her’s.
This is my Project statement for my brief which was Movement.
My electives were:
Photography, Film and Video
Animation
Graphic design
For this Project is was focusing on restriction in isolation.
I explored this throught looking at myself while stuck in my house during the covid restriction in place around the time this project began. The materials i used are those i had handy, the locations of photos for example are all locations in or around my house.
To navigate throught all my posts below i will have clickable links for each elective individually.
A mindmap, thumbnails of idea and two final design I made today in the logo workshop for graphic design, I decided to go with the logo for an ice cream company called ice-scream, as I like ice scream and have a skull tattoo.
Collage I did for graphic design after the workshop for collage last Monday, I liked the idea of people fleeing into the void to find something new, kinda achieved it I think.
Here’s my first attempt at trying to overlave audio with video and create a little story. I call this piece window gazing and i quiet enjoyed making it
I didnt go into this with just one idea in mind, i just want to shot and edit something long format just to see what the process would be like. I finally settled on doing a mock version of my morning routine once i wake up. I enjoyed learning from this process and how i might improve on something like this in the future as there are little detail’s that aren't perfect in this video, try and spot them.
I've been spending alot of time being up later at night and that has lead me to see my house in a different setting, throught his I found that a red light shines in throught the window of house.
I thought the would be the opportunity to explore more photography work and this is what I've come up with.
