Project statement
I wanted my project to capture the life behind street graffiti. The life and story of the person who created it. The reason why they sprayed. I focused specifically on the graffiti in Brighton, England. Most of the graffiti incorporates a political influence of a perennially disenfranchised population who want to “fuck the system”. According to Urban Dictionary “To bring down this ensalving government whos only will is to become more powerful and wealthy at the expense of the common working class” . I want to focus my project on the frustrations and the perceived neglect of these people.

My 6 look line up:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve designed high end street wear consisting of windbreakers, hoodies, gilet, trackpants rain jackets, and cross body spray can shaped bags. I wanted to design a collection called “JOKA” that represented the power of the people in a political system. I was inspired by the spray paint in Brighton and it’s vibrant and vivid colours. I wanted my line up to be full of energy fun and colour.

I wanted to make a close up fashion illustration of my headpiece.
I incorporated a dragonfly into my line up as it’s a symbol for change, transformation and self realisation. I wanted to bring it into the project as I reminder that everything is temporary and that things can change starting from something as simple as a spray can. If Graffiti changed anything it would be illegal.

Colour Palette for 6 look line up
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taking inspiration from both Terry urban and the grafitti in Brighton I painted this picture to get familiar to this painting style and as a trial run. I want to paint another one however with more layers and with stencils. I want my colour palette for my 6 look line up to be a painting.

Terry Urban
Artist Research
Urban originally from Ohio now living in LA Urban is a DJ and a painter. A lot of his work is inspired by both pop and hip hop. Urban’s style is mostly influenced by abstract expressionism where he is not interested in accurate execution of his subject. I absolutely love his style and it is clear graffiti has also been of influence for him.

I wanted to make a video to capture the subject matter of my project and to showcase the finished piece I am very happy with how it turned out.
I made the video that projected on me with the images I have gathered from Brighton and images from Pinterest that supported them.
I would never have been able to make this myself without the help of Kate McCarthy @k00258269 and Joanne Murray @k00254919 who were so patient, helped me record this and gave me SO much help putting this together ! So thank you !!!
After I got all the footage I edited it to the beat of the drums. I’m so happy I did this because I learned so much from crotchet videography to editing.

The jester Headpiece
I wanted to make a headpiece which symbolised the anonymity of the person who created the graffiti in Brighton. The joker idea represents how according to the graffiti artist the country’s common working class feels like the government’s joke, their puppet a slave working solely for them.
I added another layer of wool to thicken the frill and I learned how to crotchet a cone shape, for my first time crocheting I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
The most important thing I learned was how important patience is when you have an idea in your head you want to carry through with.

The imagery inside the crotchet was so cool I decided to photograph it and use it for inspiration for my 6 look lineup.

Crotchet
I had unused wool which I decided to use in my project because the colours reminded me of street art and graffitti.
I have never crocheted before and I have such an appreciation for those who do now because it took me 3-4 days of constant starting unraveling and starting again I nearly gave up so many times because I found it hard to get used to the idea of it since I’m only familiar with the basics of knitting. I’m glad I kept with it because I wanted to make a Jester style headpiece. Thanks to YouTube I was able to teach myself !
