Artist Research:
When it come to print and talking about who inspires me to be in print, there's only one artist that I always mention. Katsushika Hokusai. I've been in love with his work since i can remember. If we are talking about what one artwork made me become a printmaker it would be "Under the wave off Kanagawa".

I have always been fascinated my his style and use of colour and how much detail he can fit into one print.
Another thing that made me do print is not just an artist but more so a style of art that being Pop Art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Main reason being again the way the use of colour is in pop art. Growing up around the time comics were really popular and pop art in general i was exposed to a lot of it. I feel this combined with Hokusai is what forms my style.

Today we got to hang up our work in the hall. This was so much fun and getting to see everyone's work slowly being put up and filling the wall was really satisfying. Seeing everyone's different styles and own interpretation of the brief was really cool and interesting. This was a really nice wrap up for the year getting to talk to everyone and admiring each other's work. This is why i decided to come to art college and i can't wait for 2nd year to come around.

Had to work from home due to some personal reason so i decide to turn all my stingray prints into different little characters almost like graffiti-ing on art.

Today i finished of my etching prints. Got the plate biten on Tuesday and today i printed with the plate. It was fun but i personally don't think it was my style. When i first got interested in print i thought i would like etching the most but after trying it a few time and now properly in college i found out i actually prefer other types more like woodblock and screen printing. Not saying i didn't enjoy it, just personal preference i say. Still im really happy with how these turned out.

Today we had a workshop on electro-etching. We learnt about why we are doing it and how its better for the environment than regular etching with acids and such. It was really a fun to learn about what's going on in the art world and how people are finding different ways to produce prints.

Today just kept it simple and decide to do more prints of the stingray since the first set came our so well. Decided to use a lighter colour to see how it looks. Sadly it didn't come out how i thought it would but was still happy with it non the less.

Next thing today i went and did a few monoprints on its own with no background image to begin with. I wanted to experiment with texture and shape. One of them i tried making the shape of fish which actually turned out better than i expected.

Today I got pretty busy doing a lot of different thing. To start I got to bind my ricograph prints into miniature books. It was quick and easy with the staple binding and quite addicting and satisfying which is why i ended up with a few more.

Today we learnt how to clean off our screens. Again a really fun process in my opinion and that i really enjoyed. After leaving the screen in the dryer for a bit i went and set up another print on the screen this time of a stingray. After the koi fish print i kept finding really funny images of different fish facing the camera and making a funny face so i decided to pivot a little bit from my original idea and make it more about fish in general. Im really have with how these turned out. The colour really pops out and you can really see the detail.

Today I learnt how to do monoprints and how i can use it to create effects and layers to my other prints. Using my koi fish prints I experimented and played with different effects i could make using cling film. I like how quick and easy monoprints are and how you can experiment using different materials.

This week we are learning screen printing. I did mine on a koi fish poking his head out the water. I really enjoyed screen printing, found the process really satisfying and enjoyable. This is something I will definitely keep trying out and learning. Screen printing is something i alwats wanted to do since i started here in LSAD. Seeing the other years doing it really inspired me to keep pursuing my goal.

For our first week we got introduced to risograph printing. I had decided to do my brief on the identity of koi fish. What they represent and the meanings behind them in different cultures. Here we have a mix of Japanese and Chinese culture and meanings for the Koi. I really enjoyed the process of making a ricograph print. You'd think that a printer would be a printmaker's worst nightmare but actually using it to make your prints was really insightful. Using it to our advantage and that not everything had to be hard work labor intensive and sometimes can just be some quick sketches ran through the printer for some really nice results.

🐟Identity of Fish🐟
For this last brief I decided to do something fun and chill while still being able to try out new printing techniques. For as long as I remember I have been fascinated by fish and sealife. I love going to aquariums and seeing all the different sealife just living there lives. When we see fish and sealife in pictures its generally on its side where you can see most of the fish, kinda like these emojis 🐟🐠🐡. This is how most people identify and see a fish. But what about when the fish faces directly towards you. Well then you get some really funny and weird pictures. We aren't use to seeing fish from this angle which make them look weird almost alien like at times.

They also look really cute.

While researching ceramic artists i came across Heesoo Lee. She a renowned ceramic artist who theme is focused around nature and the movement of nature. Though its not directly linked to my theme i still learnt a lot from looking through her work. I really like art works that showcase nature. A lot of my personal work in the past has revolved around nature so her work really inspired me as an artist and a student. I love her use of shadows in her ceramics to make the natural colours of nature stand out more.

Wasn't able to take pictures of the glazing process as it is quite a messy process. I decided to just go with a transparent glaze for all my pieces as it will make the underglaze pop out more. These are all the final products. I am quite happy with how they all turned out. Some self criticism i would of liked to take a bit more time with the underglaze for the bottom plate for the top as it was quite uneven. A colour wheel when spun should turn white but i didn't put enough red in so when i spun it you see yellow and blue. The red gets drowned out by the other 2 primary colours.

With my pieces cool enough i decided to add a bit more to the underglaze. Gemma, one of our ceramic tutors gave me an idea. She seen i was working a lot with the wheel and she talked about another wheel that i hadn't thought of before. A colour wheel. So with that i did a little bit of research, picked out my colours and got to work. I painted the plate for the top a full colour wheel. And the car wheels i decide to fill the little gaps with a different colour to the rims of it so when it spins the colours mix and you see a different colour. As for the tops i just added a bit more colour but mainly left them the same. After this all thats left is glazing which we are doing on Thursday and the final firing.
