Using my swatches I created some designs inspired by my mood boards and Do Ho Suh's work.

Jacqueline West
Another designer I looked at was Jaqueline West and her work in the movie franchise "Dune". Her designs use colour and texture to tell a story. her designs mimic the desert with their light and airy materials that inspire movement. This is also contrasted with the harsh outfits of the deep desert that she has created.

The Condom Coat - Holly Waddington
Tumblr media
One inspiration for my designs is Holly Waddington's costume design in Poor Things, especially this floor-length translucent natural latex cape. The cape, what the designer has called the condom coat, resembles some of Do Ho Suh's work with its sheer appearance. I think it's an innovative use of colour and texture.

The two textile processes I have chosen are embroidery and smocking. I did some research into both processes to get a better understanding of them

After choosing Do Ho Suh as my artist I began to do some contextual research making colour and mood boards to explore his work

Do Ho Suh
Do Ho Suh is a Korean artist born in Seoul South Korea. he works in sculpture installation and drawing. He is known for his recreations of objects and architecture using sheer fabrics.
Tumblr media
I was drawn to Do Ho Suh for his sheer architectural installations. I love his use of vivid colours that contrast with the sheerness of the fabric. another appealing element is these installations are an act of memorialization for Do Ho Suh and he uses this idea of home as a constant theme throughout his work.

I was also drawn to Do Ho Suh's sketches and embroidery. He draws by directly embroidering on paper. This was something I hadn't seen before and found very interesting. I love the textures that are created by using thread on paper. Do Ho Suh often keeps the tension quite low and this creates loops on the page which adds more interesting texture

The Life Cycle of a Leaf
My theme for the project "Movement" is the life cycle of a leaf.
In this project, I aim to explore how a leaf changes, moves and grows throughout the year. I want to look at different areas like patterns, shapes and colours and how these all change throughout the year.
My project originally started with the movement of dragonfly wings. As I researched and worked I found that I was coming up short with primary research. I found that because of my lack of primary research, I found it hard to have a basis on which to create making it harder for me to work in the workshops. Due to this, I changed my project to the life cycle of a leaf.
Through this project, I have found 4 main visual stages in which I viewed the leaf. First, as a bud, as it begins to grow. Then as a fully formed leaf when it is green and the tree is full. Next, the leaf as it begins to lose its chlorophyll and its colour begins to change. Finally, a dead leaf that has fallen from the tree and lies on the ground.
My three disciplines are fashion and textiles, painting and printmaking. I feel like these areas greatly informed my project. I explored with many different materials and this textile exploration was vital. However, I feel that I didn't allocate enough time to painting and exploring in that discipline. This is mainly due to the fact I was ill when I did the painting workshop. However, painting did influence my work in other areas. Throughout this project, I felt that I gravitated more toward fashion. I feel that my strengths lie in Fashion and textiles and that is why I chose it

I then used the leaves from my primary research to create some leaf shadows.

Patrick and I then moved to the light projection room. I used the light projector and also some orange plastic to create this look.

Today is the last day of the project and unfortunately, I didn't get to finish my blouse. However, I still did want to experiment with photography so I put up my series of ink drawings back on the wall as I thought they would make an excellent background.

Using the netting I printed onto I pinned the fabric to create a dress. The sheer skirt is beautiful and provides a delicate look.
