Theme : Movement Path : Movement From Childhood to Adolescence. The stark emotional, physical, social and mental changes from my childhood to adolescence. How becoming a woman from a girl completely changed how society/family/myself sees me, how it completely changed my hobbies and what I surround myself with. {Animation, Painting, Print}

Concept Development : Animation X Screen Print
The stencil for the eye included the twirly eye veins that were present in the animation version of the eye.
Unfortunately, similar to the previous time I used a screen, the prints were very stiff and barely came through. Some of the stencil fell off so I cut the white of the eye in half for effect (bottom two prints)
Tumblr media
I chose the dark colour purple as it links to the Animation version of this eye, and it links to the palettes used in the Painting Elective.
Since I had to go to work, there was little time to save this print. Therefore I took one of the prints and added extra embellishments using different materials such as paint, marker and pen.

Movement
I feel I adequately linked the theme of Movement from Childhood to Adolescence throughout the three electives.
I also recognise there's potential for much more gaps to be filled.
I lacked the self awareness in this project to highly link the three electives together, and I needed to be told in a tutor meeting. Due to the tutor meeting being held during the later stages of this project, the links are weaker and last minute. This is also due to me not being present as much as I should have been during Printmaking-Drypoint (2nd last week of the project) because I was ill.
However with the tutors advice I dedicated both of the Printmaking electives to bridging gaps, and based all ideas on concepts already explored throughout the previous 4/5 weeks of Movement.
I enjoyed Movement much more than Assemble. Shorter time frames work better with me, as it's easier to organise and I don't feel lost.
I also much preferred the theme of Movement from Childhood to Adolescence than the Assembly of Humans and Nature.
It was easier to navigate chosen electives than it was to scramble for spaces at workshops, and then applying to random workshops that were free if I couldn't get chosen workshops.
It was also easier to navigate materials and spaces that the college has to offer (such as the photography room) for this project.

Screen Print X Painting : Hourglass and Childhood -> Adolescent Transition
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upon looking back at what I produced for previous electives, I found an abandoned transition. The second photo was the original transition between childhood me to adolescent me, before the Hourglass.
I decided to explore shapes and colours, and to combine the two transitions, in screen print.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This shape is inspired by both the hourglass and the abandoned transition.
Since I wanted to explore two colours, I created two stencils : one for red (and for shape stability for blue) and one for blue (bottom only).
1: Red
The press I used for this stencil was very stubborn and I had to do ~8-10 trials to achieve these results.
Per one press I had to do multiple floods, which would usually destroy a print from a usual press.
Tumblr media
2: Blue Trials
The stiffness in press is more apparent here.
Tumblr media
3: Combine
I sellotaped the stencil for the blue part onto the stencil for the red part to make sure the placing was within the red patterns.
Since the top part was not cut out on the blue stencil, the red stencil (top) did not come through with blue ink
Tumblr media
I enjoyed this process. Unfortunately since the press was stiff, it was a tedious process. However I feel that the vibrant inks available in this workshop will work well with Painting Elective patterns and transitions, and Animation characters/glitch.

Animation X Print : Glitch
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For screen printing, I combined Animation and Print by exploring the glitch.
I used basic shapes on the lens for warmup, as this was most of our first time using the screen print method.
Here were two attempts from the ink finding a path through the synthetics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here was the final result. I chose this colour as it's quite artificial, much like a screen glitch. I feel the colours of the glitch in the animation (4th picture below title for reference) were too "organic".

Drypoint X Painting : Hourglass
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Movement from childhood to adolescence.
Bringing in people and poses from the hourglass painting, I tried a different composition with monoprint. I explored with different transitions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although I appreciate the dark atmosphere that monoprint offers here, I prefer the painting. The compositions and colours of the painting play a huge part in the message and effect.

Drypoint X Painting : Combination of Childhood and Adolescence Hobbies/Belongings
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This piece in painting was done to compare some childhood hobbies and belongings side by side, to see the stark contrast.
To combine the painting elective and the print elective, I created a design of a vape sprouting some designs from my childhood diary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The combination of the two is strange to me, it almost looks like a design targeted to kids to encourage vaping.
There's little difference in age between children and young adolescents. Bad habits like vaping are encouraged so much between adolescents that designs targeting children to vape are not too far off colourful and fruity vaping flavours, appealing to/encouraging young adolescents

Drypoint Print X Animation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I brought animation and dry point print together by doing a monoprint of a character, "You", from animation.
Animation and paint has also been combined here as the master shot was created with paint.
I used the master shot as inspiration for the scene. I distorted the present glitches and added new glitches and effects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't take into consideration that the character will be facing the opposite direction after printing. At the same time I do not want this scene to be identical to the master shot so it worked.
The patchiness of black and white in the background gives most of the atmosphere to this scene, much like the Eye in the previous post.
I feel that the monoprints of these characters work much better than paint for the master shot.
The ink offers a raw, ominous and foreboding effect that the painted master shot could not achieve.
It's interesting to see the difference in atmospheres through different mediums.

Drypoint X Animation : Eye
I combined animation and print together by doing a mono print of a character from my animation elective.
The animation and paint elective has already been combined from the fact that the master shot presented here was painted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The patchiness of ink works brilliantly with the atmosphere I was going for. Since the eye is from an environment that is glitching and disintegrating, the white and black scrapes and patches match this.
It added more glitch than drawn. It also gives the print an old photograph effect

Drypoint Print Concept
Bringing in a concept from animation to drypoint print
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The monoprint process is tricky and tedious. I much prefer to sketch, as it's easier to add shade. It is also more forgiving. There's no spectrum of shade on monoprint, each hard mark you make is black.

Print Concept : Adolescent Pose. Primary Source
I will not share the full primary sources of my adolescent body pose as they are too revealing, but I'll post covered versions as proof that I am working from primary sources.
The halter neck top I am working from has been left in my home county so I altered a temporary makeshift one for the sake of primary source.

Print Concept
Background planning for dry-point.
I brought back a concept from animation (first picture), to link the animation elective to the printmaking elective.
The idea is to put my childhood face on my adolescent body as a reminder there's a person behind the woman's body that is sexualised. It also represents the fact that when little girls hit puberty, they are sexualised by others or themselves from a very young age, sometimes at 10.
They're still children.

Painting Week Two
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this collage painting I've included photographs, childhood artefacts (nerf bullets, video game covers, deconstructed Harry Potter music box, fidget spinner, Kilkenny braid, my First Holy Communion CD as the right eye) and adolescent artefacts (drawings, video game covers, photographs, IVG packet, Monster logo)
I intend to come back to this painting over the next few weeks and add more artefacts to it, when I collect some from my home during the weekend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the original idea I intended to have more facial features present, however I quickly realised that if they were to be present I would have to sacrifice clarity on the artefacts.
I enjoyed having the opportunity to apply my primary sources directly to a piece of work from this project.
The comparison of childhood objects and adolescent objects next to each other is unsettling. My change mental health is represented through the art, and by the habits I keep: vaping and loads of energy drinks.
Seeing this beside the First Holy Communion CD is ironic; it makes me wonder if doing things you said you never would (as a child) is a rite of passage to growing up.
The painting ended up way more eerie than I intended. It fits well with the other two paintings via colour palette and atmosphere.

Painting Week Two
This week explored what my past/present interests and belongings say about who I was before and who I am now.
"I am a mosaic of everyone I've ever loved, even for a heartbeat" (Everyone changed -> everything)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos as reference to integrate into the painting either physically or by drawing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drawings and prints I've done and cherished in my surroundings. I decided to use the real ones and not copies of them to impact the painting more.
Empty packet of an old IVG 800puff. Including the good, the bad and the ugly in terms of things I love.

Painting Week 1 : Concept 2
Exploring the developed idea, testing and practicing composition/colourful sand blend, using sugar from previous post as reference.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Process.
Blue - usually the colour of "Good". Represents serenity, peace, calm.
Red - usually the colour of "Bad". Represents lust, seduction, danger, risk; intense.
Tumblr media
Result.
Tumblr media
The result was far better than expected. This version of the original idea works far better, as it includes time and can only be interpreted as so.
The expression from the picture I took of myself twelve years ago fits well into the context. Nervous of the inevitable.
