Who should decide what people can’t or can see?

Week 8: BBFC Case Study

Should there be any Media Censorship? 

There are many arguments about censorship. “People should be protected” “Everyone should have the freedom to decide” 

The British Board of Film Classification or BBFC is a voluntary body, not controlled by the government. Having the BBFC approval for a film/movie is not required, however, it is best to have the BBFC approval. 

In the early years of the BBFC, there cannot be any nudity or depiction of Christ.

However is the newspaper any better than films/movies? The news tells real, horrid story, but none of it is ever censored. Or censoring nudity in films when we claim the Greek statues and painting as arts. 

Over the years the BBFC has become more open about media censorship and only have “viewer discretion”  allowing people to decide what they want to watch. People should have the freedom to decide what they want to see. Nobody likes to be told they cannot do or see something.

Week 7: Working in TV Scriptwriting

Working in TV Scriptwriting 

Like many industries, TV Production has many different types of jobs and departments. Some of the jobs include:

Scriptwriter

Script Editor

Director 

Producers 

Executive Producers 

Commissioner 

Showrunner 

And more...

A Scriptwriter is the people who write the script. They create the characters and the plot. They are basically God of the show/film. Here Peter Russell gives advice on how to write a script.

A Script Editor works with the scriptwriter, producer, and director. She/he has to make sure the script is right for the production. 

The director and producer are the ones that chose the script they want to produce, oversee the production, and chooses the cast members. 

The executive producers manage the cast and crew, maintaining a schedule and have to secure the fundings for the show. They oversee the work of the producers for the distributors. 

The commissioner is basically the buyer of the show. 

The Showrunner is higher than the director. He/she must overwatch the entire tv series. Here is a full description of what a Showrunner does:

During our seminar, we had to create a drama series. We have to decide what type of drama it will be and who the protagonist will be. We decided to use Lorraine story. The series is roughly based on her as the protagonist trip on a boat for 10 days.  It would be a comedy sitcom. The series will have 10 episodes and each about 20 minutes long. It will be targeted at teenagers and young adults. The whole series revolves around her trying to get off the boat.

What makes a Good Ad?

Week 4-5: The World of Advertising & How to get into the advertising industry? 

This week we had guest lecturer Dr. Paul Booth come and talk to us about the Advertising Industry. There is a lot of stuff to take into account when making an advertising campaign. 

Does the ad have empathy with the targeted group?

Can it beat the competition?

There are many ways to sell an ad:

The before and after use of the product

Heritage (background)

Turning negative to positive

Honesty 

Empathy (understanding)

Demonstration of use

Testimony (proof)

A truism (something that is obviously true)

Analogy/ Visual metaphor

This was a badly made advertisement made by Reebok. It is implying that all guys cheat and are an egotist. No one wants to be that. 

On the other hand, Nike most famous advertisement is renowned. It is simple and motivating. It does not make the person working out feel like an ass.  

During the seminar, we have to make 3 ads for Lego. The ad has to fall under one of the three strategy statement:

Durability

Safety

Education 

For our ads, my group chose to go with Education. 

In the first ad, we have a baby crawling up a set of stairs made of legos toward a book. The book represents education and the baby is saying Le’ go and is eager to learn. 

In the second ad, we have a child using legos to build a house. Showing imagination and how legos can help kids learn.  

In the last ad, we have an architecture using legos to get inspiration.

Coordinating As a Production Coordinator

Week 3: Working in the Film Production

In 5 years if I am to work in the Film Industry which job will suit me the best? Will it be Hair & Makeup Artist? Camera Assitant? Production Coordinator? Assistant Director? 

Hair & Makeup Artist must design the entire look for the characters in the film and make sure all the actors and actresses are “camera ready”. While the Camera Assistant prepares all the equipment needed for the scene for the Camera Operator to use. The Production Coordinator mainly works in the office to manage the schedule and budget and to make sure everyone is where they should be. The Assistant Director entails working with the director to supervise the daily filming. 

I would like to be a Production Coordinator. It is an introductory position in the film industry.  The job requires me to make sure all the cast and crew are happy and everything is according to schedule. Also as a Production Coordinator, you don’t need to be at the film location. You have to organize and be able to juggle several projects at once:

In today’s lecture a Theresa Orlando, a Kingston Alumni came and talked to us about working in the Film Industry. There are many jobs in the Film Industry and it takes everyone to keep the production running smoothly and on schedule. It is always best to generate positive energy and confidence during a film production.

Where to get funding for your next film

Week 2: Film Distribution: Distribution of What & How?

The British Film Institute (BFI) is an organization to help preserve and promote filmmaking in the United Kingdom.  BFI provides fund to help support distributors to release independently produced films. There are 4 Application Strands to the BFI Distribution Funds:

Big Audience

Breakout

New Models

Sleepers 

The Big Audience Fund are provided to films that have commercial appeal.  Breathe directed by Andy Serkin is a good example of BFI Audience Fund.

It is a biographical drama, a heartwarming story about a man named Robert Cavendish who contradicted polio not long after marrying his wife, Diana. The story is about his struggle and how with the support Diana, Diana twin brother, and an inventor he overcame his disease and devoted the rest of his life to helping other patients and disables. 

The film is very appealing to the youth and adults. Also, because it is based on a true story it captivates more audience. The trailer was put out through the spreadable media. The film was released in film festivals all over the United States, in the London Film Festival, and Toronto International Film Festival. Now anyone can watch it online on youtube, iTunes, Amazon, etc. 

During our seminar, we looked at 2 films also funded by the BFI, Upstream Colour and Mr. Nice. We talked about the demographic and how the film was distributed. It gave us a good idea of how the BFI help fund films.
