THANK YOU PREV THIS IS SUCH A GOOD ADDITION
it's that time again
here's my analysis on the Anakt Garden artificial flowers and what they represent to the characters and story overall
the anakt flowers are consistently featured on screen throughout alnst, whether it's in the videos, official art, or the comics. they can't be shown that often if not to mean something, especially in a show as detail oriented and heavy in symbolism as alnst.
okay so there's been this theory running around that these flowers had hidden cameras in them used to monitor the children.
in the artbook, that theory was proven to be true.

so we know now that the anakt flowers are secretly cameras. seemingly innocent and beautiful decorations are used to spy on the children, a testament to the fact that they had no right to privacy, that their lives were not their own.
the fact that mizi ADORED those flowers but had no idea of their true purpose is reflective of her dream to sing in alnst. something idealized and gorgeous, but with darkness residing just beneath its exterior. she sees the world through rose colored lenses and is unaware of the evil that lurks just beneath her favorite things/dreams.
her reality is way more disturbing than she realizes, the aliens are way more cruel and invasive than what she expects, and her love for the spy devices disguised as flowers shows just that.
im not too sure if sua KNEW about the cameras, but she knew about the Snow Thing, so im gonna assume she knew abt the cameras too.
her letting mizi play with the flowers without telling her a thing and even allowing her to craft flower crowns out of them is an example of her deliberate avoidance of the truth behind alnst. through mizi's joy, she forgets about the harsh reality they live in, and escapes through that.
whenever mizi's holding them, the flowers almost look real.

the fact that she lets mizi give her flower crowns and put them on her head, and does the same in turn... she's willingly giving in to the system to keep mizi's blind-sighted joy alive. dooming them both because she can't bring herself to break the bliss.
as for till. he initially began to like the flowers because mizi likes them. till has always liked pretty things.

his talent being floral art, even if the flowers are spy devices... sort of reminds me of one of his coping mechanisms--making art that's representative of his pain.
he takes something terrible or twisted and reforms it into something pretty. something that can be appreciated rather than avoided.
(page 59 of the artbook has a quote referring to till that reads: “When I couldn't sleep because of insomnia, I could only fall asleep by squeezing out my physical strength with creation. I like to doodle, so I doodle anywhere, and I often write poetry (mainly about mizi) to support my emotions.”)
in comparison to many of the other ways till uses his hands (fighting, breaking things, playing loud and powerful melodies, etc), the way he handles the flowers is methodical. gentle. precise and careful.
we're shown his kinder side for the first time THROUGH a flower, too.

he knows his illusion is particularly fragile, so he does all he can to not mar it before getting lost in it. he uses it as a distraction.
till tends to trail behind mizi and sua with flower crowns/chains of his own because he wants to play with them as well, but he rarely makes the move to approach them.

at the end of the day, the false reality, the illusion of purity, is not till's to keep. no matter how peaceful the garden may seem, there will come a period of time when till has to go back. when he must be reminded that his body doesn't belong to him.
ivan never had much interest in the flowers. in fact, he was more often shown breaking them or stomping on them rather than playing with them. (whether that's because he KNEW about the cameras or simply because he wanted to piss till off (or both) im still iffy on but there's that)

ivan has always been the most connected to reality out of the group. he sought no form of escapism, in fact, he frowned upon it (he says mizi's optimism is too much for him at times, and criticized sua for living in a wonderland despite knowing how it will inevitably end. for nurturing mizi's innocence for so long and then shattering it in the cruelest way.)
he fell in love with till, who had no choice but to face reality head on and he relates to sua, who's also had her fate sealed by the society she lives in. he's very honest to himself about these facts.
he doesn't run from suffering, having been exposed to it since infancy. no point in avoiding the truth if it's being perpetually shoved in your face all the time. he keeps it real.
no interest in the flowers, no interest in a plastic paradise. (i could find a way to tie this to that one acrylic stand of ivan eating a flower but i think that's just a silly doodle. nothing SUPER DUPER deep about it.)

(look at him. what is his PROBLEM <3)
as for the overarching meaning, flowers in general tend to symbolize innocence, purity and beauty. by that logic, FAKE flowers would symbolize a fabrication of purity.
a flower that is not only fake, but used as a spying/restriction device, a tool of oppression, symbolizes a prison painted as a paradise--such is the world of Anakt Garden.

Thinking back on Till's POV, the lack of it makes Till's personality difficult to articulate. But I like how multi-faced he is as a character, very flawed, and contradictory... (although endearing), sometimes he confuses me with his constant highs and lows. He's very malleable and sensitive and honestly doesn't try to suppress it. Yet he outwardly hides so much of himself and is majorly avoidant of confronting certain aspects of what he feels and spiraling. Because of all these factors, he's a very emotionally unstable (often escapist), immature character, and following this train of thought as his emotional arc progresses is interesting.
For instance, from the beginning. In his childhood, I always thought Till had a boyish personality, but I constantly think about the way Till goes back and forth between having an unrealistically romantic perspective, or he's a closed-off yet passionate character with a lot underneath

To acknowledge his flawed traits Till shows himself to be weak-minded, has a child-like arrogance, and short-sighted (this isn't to say he's an asshole sometimes on purpose honestly, seeing the way he's just as quick to treat others with kindness and politeness, but those traits are a part of his character...) whilst he is also a timid and kind-hearted and insecure person, even though he has a timidity about him and, as aforementioned, insecurity about his safety and self-assurance because it has otherwise been compromised over and over again by the constant and explicit abuse he suffers, he holds onto to a motivating and empowering factor about his natural talent for music and art- that because he's the best of the best at music among his peers, even if the world destroys him as long as he has music he can do anything and protect himself, and what he cares about, nothing else matters, so he absorbs himself into immersing in his inner world and his art&music. In a way that explains why he acts like a chuunibyou ("HAHA...WEAK PET HUMANS...I'LL BEAT YOU WITH THE BLOOD OF MUSIC RUNNING IN МY ВОDY! HEHE!"), When it comes to his music, he's very certain about his ability because he knows what the aliens think of him and how much they regard him (though that's also not very consistent; his confidence is secretly in the dumps)

In his idealization and idealized self, he finds his function. Alongside this, he finds purpose in Mizi, a perfect, inspiring, and dreamy person in Till's perspective, which is why he's so attached to her, if not because of the relief she is to him by simply allowing him to play with her. That is why I describe him as an escapist, too, because that is what he does when the world is too much for him, that is what Mizi is to him in this environment where cruelty is a constant, feeling isolated and living in abuse makes a child seek out a safe and secure connection, and Till clings to that when he meets Mizi and she is often portrayed as Till's muse and his motivation, because of exactly what she means to him as someone he feels deep affection for and wants to protect

Then again, Till is simultaneously careless about his close friendships. He is, unfortunately, absent-minded/awkward, and is only meticulous about his music. Even though he could have a better situation, it's another area of life where he's fumbling. It's shown in how he deals with Ivan. He has a close bond with Ivan and seems to genuinely consider him close (But I already kinda talked about that).

source
They see each other, but cannot truly see eye to eye because he perceives Ivan as odd, and Ivan irritates him. They didn't know how to help themselves. It's highlighted in their story that they never learned how to approach each other. At that time, Till was completely oblivious to what Ivan truly thought about him, and he didn't need to know, in the case that he was probably actively shrugging it off, too distracted with other things in his life. Ivan wouldn't force him either way.
There is also his dynamic with Mizi, it's conveyed in many ways that he only has an idealized perception of Mizi, that simpler and lovable side. So insecure over the fact that he's not brave enough to confront her and too shy and closed off to make an effort to truly get close to her (so much so that even the ever-trusting and socially oblivious Mizi was thinking that he didn't really like her)
TL: @/SegyeinArchive on twit

His profile puts it way better: Till has a simple ignorance that is a double-edged sword. He can be content for a while, but under intense pressure, it becomes a weakness
There is a lot that correlates to why Till has the lowest rating of all characters in terms of emotional strength; he has too many weaknesses, relies too much on his dependency, and is reactive to stimuli and triggers in his environment. Even though Till has a resilient spirit, he can't see himself not leaning on Mizi or living without her. When Ivan dies, he's forced to confront so much of what he hadn't before, and it sends him spiraling while he's already dealing with the loss of Mizi. Even though he is a rebellious character, he lashes out at the aliens on pure instinct, not because he had a methodical form of rebellion in mind. And he gets treated like a rabid animal and beaten down for it. It's bound to get to him when all his defenses are destroyed. And he's unequipped to deal with the emotional turmoil he goes through as the story progresses. That is the arrow that comes back to stab him in the back.
In round 2, his foolishness and lack of tact are re-established. I believe this is the part where you can really describe Till as short-sighted (and impulsive for how quickly he killed his guitar, even if it worked in his favor) because here he passionately expresses his genuine confession of love for Mizi in hopes of at least her acknowledgement in a pretty inappropriate setting (no ill-will there, but definitely odd). In Round 5, a crucial moment for Till's character development is shown. Till's fearful dependence on Mizi's well-being keeps him wanting to stay by her side. But when she's gone, he's lost. The tension that prompts his character development reveals how truly emotionally unstable he was to begin, and in Round 6 and Round 7, it shows the full depth.
At this point in his character development, it's hard to grasp him because his volatility is sporadic. His emotions are visibly all over the place, but it makes sense. I believe Vivinos meant to paint the picture of a multi-faced trauma victim with continuous overlapping traumatic experiences, and what they made of him: a biting and cornered animal, truly something broken and grasping at straws, and his misery is raw, and when he circles back to how he was in the very beginning when he sees Mizi after so long without her, hopeless and afraid? Almost everything, including his impulsivity, escapism, and naive ignorance, was re-established. When looking into his character psychologically, he's so fun to research...
PLEASE LET ME HAVE HIS ACTUAL POV I CAN'T DO IT ANYMORE
#YOU EXPLAINED HIM SO WELL#he fully convinced himself that all he needs is mizi and his music#that nothing could hurt him as long as he had those things#but all the while he was getting worse and worse without realizing it#and once mizi was taken and music turned against him he fell apart#he rly didn't think anything through because WHAT was his plan for alnst#then again its kinda hard to make a plan when you're being tortured by your guardian 24/7#its not even that till's inherently stupid or delusioned#he was just pushed to the brink of insanity#literally every other pet urak had killed themselves bro till you were so doomed#alien stage#alnst#alien stage till#alnst till#MY SHAYLA....

every reference to animals I can think of in ALNST
aka: I'm in grief and this is how I cope. by making yet another ALNST analysis post. (hey so uh I started writing this post right after wiege happened and forgot about it and finished it just now.)
@thegh0st-of-ingrid @hoisinblackcat @ventiilatte @probably-a-human-being
first off, I think it's fair to start off with the most obvious animal that I and many other people have compared the human pets to: dogs.
first of all: the collars.
shock collars have been used as a way to discipline your dog to prevent behaviors that you don't want them to do. this is called (AP psychology time!) positive punishment, where you give an "undesirable consequence after an unwanted behavior to make it less appealing". I'm not entirely sure what the collars in ALNST do, as we never actually see anyone get punished via the collar. however, till is shown having a collar over his mouth, neck, and his entire body:
so that leads me to believe that some shock or pressure thing is enacted by the collars. additionally, the collars are also shown to flash green when the pet is in a calm state and flash red when the pet is in a stressed state.
the second thing that makes me compare the human pets to dogs is this image of sua and her owner:
where sua and her "sisters" are all on leashes, all dressed in identically frilly white dresses and bonnets. this reminds me of the stereotypical rich woman, who is often depicted with having a bazillion identical fluffy white Pomeranians purely for the aesthetic.
(not all of these are pomeranians by the way I just couldn't' find a better photo with a rich woman with a lot of white dogs)
this also leads me into dog pageant shows, where dogs are compared against each other to "a judge's mental image of the ideal breed type as outlined in the individual breed's breed standard". sua is described as having "the smallest face in 50th ANAKT",
meaning that she is definitely the epitome for human pets.
the third thing that relates the human pets to dogs is the fact that luka canonically has a shitload of clones of himself.
people have already compared this to dog breeding, where breeders "mate selected dogs with the intention of maintaining or producing specific qualities and characteristics". luka was made with the intention to be the perfect human pet. bred dogs, especially pugs, also have health defects as a result of limited genetic diversity. luka is shown to have numerous health issues, which further ties into this.
there are other examples that I'll briefly touch on, like how Ivan and till's play fighting is similar to how dogs fight in real life:
and how someone once compared this image of mizi going insane to a feral dog and how she was going to be put down by segyein, much like how rabid dogs are put down:
and how dogs that are considered "undesirable" are sold at discounted prices, much like till:
there's also the fact that all six of our main protagonists have special talents (sua: mental math, mizi: scary stories, till: flower crowns, Ivan: starting fire with rocks, luka: splits, hyuna: impersonations), much like how dogs can be trained to do tricks. perhaps the segyein trained the human pets to have defining "talents" to make them unique and endear them to a wider audience.
now the next pet that I immediately think of when I think of human pets: birds.
obviously, the first thing that connects human pets to birds is the fact that they both sing, and that humans are apparently the only beings in the universe that can sing, much like how specific birds are the only animals capable of human-ish speech.
there's also the imagery of birds being trapped in cages, and how birds are trained to sing for their human owners. when hyuna escapes her "cage", she sings for others of her own species, not her owners.
I mention hyuna especially because there's this line in all-in:
which I think speaks for itself.
there's also the idea of mating songs amongst birds. in this case, obviously my clematis and cure and wiege are the mating songs for human pets, the songs that show their love and devotion to each other.
the final animal that I think of when I think of human pets: cows.
now, this one might be a weird one, but hear me out.
cows are branded by their owners so they can be identified. what do all anakt children have on them?
tattoos so they can be identified by the segyein.
there's also some more cow references with io, till's mother. io is the name of a princess who was turned into a cow, more about that in @blackhoisincat's posts here:
plenty more cow imagery and greek mythology references there.
additionally, it seems like io and baby till were kept in cages, similar to CAFOS (AP environmental science time!), which are "Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), where animals are kept and raised in confinement". humans, besides being viewed as pets, are also commodities. there's also some theories that human meat is lab grown as a food source for segyein, further contributing to this theory if that's true.
and here's one final cow reference. remember this two headed alien?
as I said previously, this alien reminded me of orthrus, the two-headed dog who guarded the *cattle* of geryon. humans are valuable, valuable enough that segyein don't want them escaping.
and that's all I have to say about animals. I have to study for pre-calculus now.
