“Thanks, I have my moments every now and then.” She smiled. “That’s a smart idea, I bet it’ll give you a nice peace of mind, not ever worrying about your kid getting stranded and not knowing what to do. I wish my parents taught me that sorta stuff, I don’t even think I could change the oil, it’s a miracle I haven’t wound up stranded some place yet.” Rory joked with a quiet chuckle. “Is that how you learned? Your dad taught you?”

“Changing the oil to your car is a necessity, but that’s why you’ve got car shops around for that so no worries about that.” he said switching the gears of the car into third. “My dad probably couldn’t tell a gear from it’s rotors.” Kaden laughed a little with a shake of his head. “My buddy taught me when I was around seventeen.”

“Thanks.” Rory smiled sweetly, as she hopped into the car and buckled herself in. “I don’t know, how about we drive out to that long road that leads up to the airport? Nobody ever goes up there, so at least if I don’t get the hang of it right away there won’t be anything for me to bump into.”

"You’re smart. I think that road will be a pretty good starting point for you and well I’m sure you already know how to drive an automatic, but they say if you learn manual first you’ll never get stranded because then an automatic does the job for you and well if you need to drive but the car’s a manual then you’re all set because you’ve already learned the crooks and crannies. I’ll probably let my kid do that.” Kaden chuckled lightly as he took off heading for the road leading up towards the mountainous area.

“Are you serious? Of course I want to learn.” She beamed, smiling brightly, making her excitement pretty clear. “How about I watch you do it first, though?” She suggested. It wasn’t that Rory was a bad driver, at least she didn’t think she was. She always drove exactly how she did the very first time she went out on a road test, following every little rule that there was. Which managed to get her this far without as much as a parking ticket, luckily. It was the thought of driving stick, in someone else’s car, nonetheless, that had her a little worried. “So I can see how it’s supposed to be done and stuff.”

“Yeah, understandable. Of course.” he said opening the door for her before getting in on the other side of the drivers seat. “Where should our first stop be?”

“Bro, no way,” he exclaimed, genuinely having to contain his excitement as the keys were tossed his way. “Man, this is awesome,” he commented as he took the driver’s seat. He put the keys in the ignition and started the engine, beaming like an idiot as he heard it’s loud purr. “Sound beautiful, now let’s see how she rides.” 

Getting into the passengers side, Kaden heard the car come to life when the other male started it up. “Go for it. It’s a real beauty. You’ll see.” Kaden sat back as his arm laid along the window out of the door.

“He’s a writer who drove across America and wrote about it or something. He’s this huge icon but apparently his writing style is super poor like he just rambles with no punctuation, like he’s never taken an English class. Probably the only reason I know ‘im is cause he’s a successful drop out,” she shrugged. She supposed it always comforted that people as stupid as her could be successful at something they would have been considered poor at in the grand scheme of things. “Don’t tempt me, Kay. You know how badly I’d love to test that theory,” she teased, flashing him a playful wink as her hand lightly rested on his thigh once both his hands were on the steering wheel. “That’s awesome though, good for ye.” 

"Wow, sounds a lot like me except I’m not much a writer.” he laughed slightly. “But it’s the one who don’t look like they have much to offer that are the ones who really have a lot to offer.” he commented before looking over at her, catching her wink. “Oh, don’t think that I don’t already know you’d be the first. Maybe catch me later and we’ll see what happens.” he teased back.

“Listen, I totally agree with you. He’s a dummy. I don’t know a lot about cars, but I know if I had a really nice one, I’d totally show it off all the time. I think that’s just common sense.” Rory said with a shrug, leaning against the light-post next to the car. “Oh no. I never have before, but don’t you just move the little stick whenever you need to go faster? Something like that?”

“Exactly.” he smiled before looking down with a soft chuckle at her answer. “Something like that. Want to learn? It’s got new gear shafts and everything so it could taken a few gear grinds from a newbie like you. And that’s a compliment not to make you offended or anything.” Kaden clarified. No one else in their right mind would let an unexperienced driver take theirrecently restored manual car out for a drive, but Kaden didn’t care. It was only once so why not this time?

“Kaden, I don’t even read and I know who he is,” she told him flatly before laughing brightly. She shimmied slightly as his engine roared to life before they propelled forward. “This things amazing! Where’d you get it?” 

“Why don’t you enlighten me then? Seems I need a little more education on literature.” he said before his hand grasped the driving shaft holding firmly. “I got it at the auction believe it or not. It was pretty beat, but I managed to fix it up just nicely. Was hard getting some parts, but these hands can do anything.” he teased as his hand released the shaft and came back to the steering wheel.

“Yeah, I’ll come! Someone I used to know before I moved here had a car like that, except his was blue. And he would never ever drive it, he just played around with the crap under the hood all the time. I always thought it was sort of silly, cars were meant to be driven, right? I’m really excited to actually get to ride in one that’s moving for once.”

“Damn right they are. Treasures like this aren’t meant to be locked up. They need to be shown to the world. That’s a true idiot right there no offense, but what’s the point of having something so nice only to be stored away?” Kaden swiped his finger along the black lining of the vehicle. “You know how to drive stick?”

Ivy smiled, trotting into the car and buckling herself in. “Alright, let’s make like Jack Kerouac and get out of here.” 

“Is it a bad thing that I don’t know who he is?” Kaden said as he set the car in drive and not even a mere press of his foot and the loud engine rang loudly through the air as the car took off.

“Now this is a beautiful vehicle. I’d be honoured, man.” 

"Yeah, thanks. Just something to do to past the time, but sure thing. Why don’t you take the wheel instead and have a feel for yourself?” Kaden spoke as he took his keys out to toss over to the guy.

“Hop in.” he said and took his hand off the wheel to lean over and open the passenger side door for her.

“Now that I’m back from hustling money to get this ‘69 Mustang remodeled, anyone up for a test drive with me? I promise the roar of the engine is enough to lift your butt off the seat.”

She laughed loudly swatted away her hand, giggling as he rubbed his nose. “You’re welcome, love,” she smiled, blowing him a playful kiss as she continued to giggle. “I talk to you, you talk to me - I like it,” she smiled, taking his hand sweetly. “You’re working tomorrow? So I can come and pretend to drown?” 

Kaden looked down to when she took his hand before looking back up. “Yeah. If you pretend to drown there’s another lifeguard on duty so I’ll give him the job. I’m sure he’ll love to save you.” Kaden joked and saw their food arrived after not ordering too long ago. Just then, his stomach growled lowly as he gave her a sheepish smile. “Told you I was starving.”
