Some beast notes bc I'm in some beast mode

- Jounouchi, Mai, and Malik all love doing the press circuit; Rishid and Honda tag along, indifferently; Amelda uses it for political soapboxing so they don't let him and Valon do it anymore; Kaiba flatly refuses and no one tries to make him. Mokuba and Yuugi would be great at doing press but again the Kaiba "i'm not your show pony I won't do tricks" factor prevents them

- Rishid and Kaiba are the only Rangers who have been formally paired with two other people (Isis and Malik, Mokuba and Yuugi/Yami.) Jounouchi and Yuugi technically as well but they were never the primary Ranger pair for their Jaeger. As a result Rishid's kaiju kill count is one or two behind Kaiba's bc of his battles with Isis and his battles with Malik. Unlike Kaiba, he's the supporting Ranger for his more take-charge siblings, playing the same role Mokuba played for Kaiba.

- Rangers don't get to choose their Jaeger names or color schemes; Pegasus chooses for them, and is weirdly good (👁️) at choosing things they love

- Kaiba is stationed in Domino not bc he's from Domino but bc Pegasus is the only Marshal equipped (👁️) to handle him. The former is the official reason and the latter is the "lol we manipulated/strong-armed this guy and he's not happy about it" reason

- the Rangers invariably set the tone for their Shatterdomes. As a result, Lima is permissive, indulgent, and indifferent to rule-breaking; Anchorage and Hong Kong are social, friendly, and fun; Sydney is fiery and principled; Domino is all work, no play. Not so much gloomy as intense. San Francisco WAS known for being eccentric and gleefully nerdy.

- Ranger candidates generally train in the Honolulu or Anchorage Shatterdomes. How many candidates there are at one time, and how many actually become Rangers, is an ongoing battle of wills between Pegasus (more) and Dartz (only the best)

- Rangers generally undergo some kind of "couples/family" therapy regimen together in order to make the stresses and anxieties of Drift easier to manage, and it was effective for most Rangers. On the other hand, Kaiba was, you know, defiantly immune.

me remembering a stray post from 5098494 years ago with a minor point of characterization that i disagree with

ive read the argument that kaiba would stay in school to beat yuugi at grades, but i don't really think this squares. i think kaiba would see yuugi's "D+ SEE ME AFTER CLASS" on his math test and laugh his way to the administration office where he files his "i am dropping out of school and you won't stop me" paperwork and never steps foot in a high school classroom again.

like i think he went to high school as some kind of boring formality more than anything else. gozaburo seems to have had him in some kind of accelerated curriculum of languages, social studies, business management, and judging by DM, STEM as well (and being some kind of STEM prodigy just makes sense for him anyway, no matter the canon; he designed the duel disk!) so in the end he's just miles ahead of any high school curriculum regardless.

in addition, "beating yuugi at grades" is like... a perpendicular exaggeration of his competitive tendencies. first of all, he knows and acts like he is the smartest person in any room he walks into. he shows no signs of wanting to prove anything in that respect. he does not feel the need to prove he's smarter than yuugi because he already knows he is. second of all, "grades" is not the same as "duel monsters." grades are, in the end, a measure of how well you can take a test. Duel Monsters means something entirely different to kaiba--it is connection, passion, a vehicle of emotion; it is rising to meet the challenge of someone else, through an antagonistic/responsive zero-sum card game, with your whole being. a grade is something you can earn by yourself--a solitary victory. someone else can also "win" at grades and it has nothing to do with you. duel monsters is something you have to play with someone else, with an outcome constructed via interactions with other people.

OR LIKE....... fic about kaiba constantly trying to keep his head above water. his insane high energy shark-like "keep moving or you will drown" lifestyle. running until he crashes. schemes on schemes because the consequences of the previous scheme demanded new schemes. mokuba desperately trying to hold his brother and himself together. resentment. co-dependency. snapping and bitching. love by the skin of their teeth. intimacy/vulnerability and capitalism as polar opposites that cannot coexist. if the kaiba brothers let go of kaibacorp, then all of their suffering was for nothing. the worst kind of pain - meaningless pain. but because of kaibacorp, they suffer anyway. the perfect painless future they've always dreamed of will arrive any day now. right? right??

Fic: Apep Swallows the Moon

Fandom: Yugioh!

For: Me, the author!

A rebind of my very first bind - same fic, but updated with new skills, supplies, tools, typeset, and design sensibilities! This fic is about some horrible painful body transformations (weredragonism) and ritualistic axe killings in the woods at night, so I wanted the cover and the end-papers to reflect the bloody, uncanny, torn flesh feeling. I first cut a strip of the neon red slub and lay it across the (bradel bound) bookboards; once that was glued down, I tore up the scaly paper until I had the ideal shape for the cover. The end-papers are, of course, Crepaldi.

The fic also deals with ancient Egyptian myth and magic, so the typeset has ancient Egyptian elements, like a panel from the Book of the Dead where the gods kill the demon snake, Apep, that I used for the title spread. Apep is in the odd-page header of every chapter, but each chapter has a different hieroglyph in the even-page header, reflecting a key character from that chapter: the cat, the brother, and the Pharaoh.

8 years ago even a few weeks before this game-changing gay movie was out, I knew my life as a longtime Yugioh fan, as well as my life in general, would never be the same. I owe the DSoD a bunch: I drew hundreds of pieces of fan art; I met awesome friends both online and in person; and most importantly, the DSoD was what significantly helped me get through hard times. 🥹🥹

I tried the pixel art style this time. I'm not sure it worked the way I had intended to, but I did my best😆

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning

If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:

These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:

But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.

Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.

If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.

Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.
