Chase sniffled, doing her best to not let the tears roll down her cheeks as she stared at the vending machine in front of her. It was no big deal. Only a few quarters. But she was hungry. She felt herself tense when she heard someone behind her. Quickly, she wiped her eyes, forced on a smile and turned. âSorry, am I in your way?â
@vestalandingâ
With the quarters sheâd just taken from her wallet, Kai made her way over to the vending machine - ready to wait for the girl in front of her to be finished only to quickly come face to face with her. It was evident as soon as she made eye contact with her that something was wrong - her eyes looked irritated like sheâd been crying. âAre...are you okay, love?â She found herself asking. When she looked down to see that the stranger before her was about to walk away empty handed - Kai didnât hesitate to offer over her quarters. âHere, take these, itâs okay,â she said, quickly adding âdonât worry, I have more change in my wallet. This is nothing.â

âFor⊠for time. To not, uh- talk so much?â The tension eased up a bit in Keikoâs shoulders at the smile on the other womanâs face though. At least she hadnât made a fool out of herself already. âYeah, Pokemon Go,â she confirmed with a nod. âUh, itâs like⊠itâs randomized weather in the wild area in Pokemon Sword and Shield. It has nothing to do with real life weather.â Her words were spoken slower and more cautiously, like she wasnât entirely convinced that someone was actually asking her about one of her favourite games and being sincere without being condescending or judgmental. âIt was really sweet. Wouldâve been cooler if it was a shiny but⊠at least he got that Sneasel.â
Kaiâs brows furrowed at the blondeâs explanation - has this girl often found herself in situations where sheâs been rushed through conversations? âI want you to take your time talking to me, though,â she explained, figuring that might be the best way to make it clear that Keikoâs presence is far from a bother. âThe wild area?â She leaned in, truly fascinated by what sheâs being told even though itâs a bit hard for her to fully understand without a visual example. âWait, is Pokemon Go free? Not that that would stop me from downloading it on my phone. What I should ask is is that a good place for me to start? Iâm genuinely interested.â Just as suddenly as she leaned in did she pull back, exclaiming âoh! Forgive me, sweetheart, I didnât give you my name. Iâm Kai. While you explain to me what a wild area is, you might as well tell me what shiny means as well.â

âI mean, Iâll take about any free food and drink even if it was from my Starbucks, but this is a weird way to flirt with someone, Iâm not going to lie,â Gwen said with a small shrug. Her eyes fell over to the jar. âHefty tip helps my coworkers and I, so, again, I canât complain⊠Are you always this chipper?â
Kai really hadnât taken into consideration that offering to buy some coffee for somebody that works at a Starbucks might not come across the way she wanted it to. âWell, itâs more about giving back rather than flirting but I can see why Iâm coming off like that,â she admitted, offering the blonde another smile. âIf youâd rather, the offer still stands about buying you a drink somewhere else,â Kaiâs voice was nothing but friendly. She ended up laughing a bit when Gwen asked whether or not sheâs always this chipper. âNot as much as Iâd like to be. Are you always this hesitant with people, though?â

â  iâm  pretty  sure  itâs  called  the  switch  â  or  at  least  i  think  it  is.  not  really  sure  since  i  donât  own  one  or  see  the  hype  in  owning  one.  itâs  cute  though  that  this  kidâs  day  was  made  by  something  we  may  view  as  small  and  simple.  now  it  feels  like  jumping  through  hoops  to  experience  that  kind  of  unfiltered,  child-like  joy.  â
âThereâs a hype surrounding the switch? God, I really have been out of touch - Iâve always had such a curiosity for games, though, so maybe seeing him get all excited like that reminded me of little moments I had as a kid whenever I got to play my super nintendo. I always wanted an xbox but could never afford one until now,â she noted, realizing little too late that she went off a bit of a rant. âAdulting can be hard but you donât have at least one thing in your life that brings you that amount of joy?â

Like a moth to a flame, Keikoâs attention was quickly drawn at the mention of Pokemon â not that it wouldnât be anyway, had she realized sooner that it was her being spoken to. âI, uh- something⊠like that happened to me too. Um, not that long ago. Only it was on Pokemon Go, and I was- uh, long story short, I made an ice Pokemon spawn in summer and this kid walking by with his parents- he was just excited,â she explained in a rush, trying to cut out most of her long-winded story.
âWait, why would you make a long story so short?â Kai asked, her smile broadened as she realized how nervous the blonde seemed to be. âSo the weather has some influence for what can be caught on...what did you say it was, Pokemon Go...? Do you know if itâs the same thing for the switch?â She realized that wasnât entirely the point, though, but itâs in her nature to ask more questions. âThat sounds like something I wouldâve loved to see! Children are just so pure and honest with what makes them happy.â

âThat is adorable, and also incredibly impressive. Especially in Pokemon sword or shield.â He was assuming, seeing as sheâd mentioned the switch. âAfter all the freebie catches the game gives you it was increasingly difficult for me to catch any new ones. Then again, I tend to go for the high level pokemon because they can do cooler things.â
âPokemon sword or shield?â Kai repeated those words back to the stranger, doing her best to understand what heâs saying. âAre those two separate Pokemon games on the switch?â She asked as she leaned in, wanting to know more about what made this kid so happy. âI was wondering why heâd said he caught his first pokemon when it looked like there was a cute little creature by his side already! Not that Iâd know the difference but what are some of the higher level ones that you tend to go for?â

Daphneâs eyebrows rose at the challenge, taken off guard more than anything as it startled a laugh out of her. âYouâre right,â she conceded with a nod, keeping her eyes on Kai as she answered her question thoroughly. Though she put no one on a pedestal, she could still appreciate someone who made a career out of their own compassion. While Kai rambled, she slowly shrugged out of her jacket considering she knew she was going to be there for a bit longer than she had otherwise anticipated. âNo, I get it. It might not be the accent everyone seems to think we all have but⊠thereâs some words that hit me just right and bring out the Canadian in me.â Her eyes narrowed playfully before she leaned back, looking at the waitress while Kai rattled off their orders, thanked her as she was turning away, then turned her attention back to Kai. âSo you, like⊠take care of old people and stuff?â Daphne questioned, wanting to wholly wrap her brain around what Kai did. âOr just anybody that needs it, under whatever circumstances?â
Each time Kai caught a glimpse of the other womanâs reactions to what she was saying - she felt more and more bashful. The way Daphne smiled and conducted herself with such ease spoke volumes to Kai - this girl radiates a certain amount of confidence which makes her just as alluring. As soon as the other girl told her that sheâs Canadian - Kai realized sheâd been talking about herself so much, she wanted to turn the conversation to Daphne in hopes of hearing her reveal more about herself. âAnyone that needs it though all of my current patients are elderly. When I was living back in Nevada, my first patient was a teenager whose mom worked two jobs,â Kaiâs tone shifted a bit as she thought back to that patient - she had terminal cancer. The mother of the patient did her best to make sure her daughter had health care that would provide some comfort - as much as she could get in a situation like that. Kai became friends would many of the nurses who also worked for the family - her role was mostly that of emotional support as well as typical duties that came with being an Aide. As soon as she pulled herself away from those thoughts, she mentioned âyou said you are from Canada - whereabouts? I mean, not that Iâve ever been but...one day, thatâd be nice.â

âWas it like the Nitendo Switch? Or was it his iPhone? Because I think kids are still catching them via Pokemon Go these days.â
âWait...wait - thereâs a pokemon game for phones?!â Kai asked as she centered in on that part of what the other girl was saying. âI think it was the switch - he had to have been new to whatever he was playing. All I know is it definitely wasnât a phone.â

âi donât know anything about pokĂ©mons either, except that they have the cutest little creatures ever!â clem exclaimed. âwhat would your dream pokĂ©mon would be? i think mine would be a little fairy! i think thatâd be super adorable.â
âIâm genuinely curious as to how many pokemon there are - I imagine you are right, they are all probably so cute!â Kai exclaimed to the other woman who was sharing in her excitement - it was a nice change for once. âOh! Iâve never thought of this before but Iâd imagine liking something to do with lightning or water!â

âThe things kids get excited over right?â Becca really wished she could go back to that time when everything in the world seemed exciting. âAnd Iâm with you. My gaming knowledge is not that good although Iâm pretty sure nintendo did do the switch.âÂ
âIt was the sweetest thing ever - Iâm not what this says about me but the pure excitement that I saw from him made my whole week better. I just hope he grows up in an environment where that kind of attitude and energy is fostered,â she admitted, not allowing herself to feel worried as she shared that last thought. âWait - nintendo as in super nintendo? Thatâs as much as I know, unfortunately. I did have one of those growing up!â

âI just witnessed the cutest thing ever! This little kid got all excited, proclaiming to the world that heâd just caught his first ever pokemon on some gaming device - I think itâs called the Switch? I donât know, Iâve always been so out of touch with that stuff, unfortunately.â
