This week I attached the fashion fabric to the bottom of the crown using a pick stitch. I then cut taps in the inside of my brim so the fabric and buckram would be able to curve to match the crown. Unfortunately, my crown was slightly too large for the inside of my brim, so I had to remove the wire from the inside of the brim and cut the tabs longer. Once that was done I pinned each tab in place and used a pick stitch to attach the crown to the brim. This step is shown in the top left picture. Next I copied a compass pattern I found online onto one side of the brim with charcoal. I then burned the design into the fabric, seen in the top left. Next I bent the wire to give the hat the classic tricorn shape. Once that was done, I used a swing tack to attach the two front/side flaps to the top of the crown, which will help hold the correct shape. The last step I did was use acrylic paint to age the hat. I used a mix of burnt umber and black around the edge of the crown on both the top and bottom to mimic sweat stains. I also dry brushed an off white mix to the top edges and creases of the brim and crown to give it a weathered look. The final detail I added was touches of metallic gold acrylic to the outline of the main part of the compass.

This week I added my fashion fabric to the other side of my brim using a tunnel stitch. The tunnel stitch is used when you don't want the stitches to show. Once I finished that, I attached the fashion fabric to the top of my crown and to the top part of the side of my crown using a back stitch. I then used a tunnel stitch to connect the two ends of the side piece.

This week I added ice wool to one side of my brim and then added my fashion fabric on top of it to the same side. The ice wool was done with a back stitch and the fashion fabric was done with a tailor tack.

Poster for academic showcase. Unfortunately didn’t have the final product done in time, but there’s some decent images for the process.

An edited down version of UruR by Wardruna that will play in the background of the animation. All rights to the song belong to Wardruna. Check them out here: http://www.wardruna.com/

Made the ice effect in After Effect by creating five differently colored layers, all with a fractal noise effect on them. I then created a bunch of different triangular masks in each layer and set them to fade in at different time points.

Fixed the fire. This should be the version of the fire that will be used in my final video.

First attempt at rendering the fire animation I created using the tutorial previously linked in this process blog. Turns out the speed the fire appears when I run it pre-rendering in After Effects is significantly slower than the final speed because my computer can’t keep up with the processing of all the layers and slows it down.

The hopefully final version of all the parts being represented by moving particles. Made in Adobe After Effects. Red= Aesir gods, Blue = Ymir, White = cow.

First go at rendering. This is made using the set of effects I will be using to create the cow, Ymir, and the Aesir gods. The main one is called particular, which is an After Effects plug in from Red Giant. This is the planned path and color for the cow.

I’ve decided this is the song I will use for the background of the animation. The pace of the music matches what I’m looking for and the lyrics fit the myth I’m animating well. The lyrics translate to “In memory I travelled Back to the ice that bore me Feel the warmth from the breath that thawed me UruR“.

This week I added ice wool to the top and then to the outside side of the crown using a back stitch. I also used a running stitch at the bottom edge to help keep the ice wool stretched. The ice wool is soft and loosely woven and will help hide the bumps of the buckram. Next I added bias tape to the outside edge of the brim using a back stitch to help make the edge smooth and pretty.

This week I added the millinery wire to the outside edge of the brim, as well as the inside edge of the brim. Again, I used a blanket stitch for this. Then I attached the top of the crown to the vertical part of the crown, using a back stitch. This part was difficult because the needle had to be close to the edge where there was very little room to manipulate it.

This week I used the machine to sew along the bias lines on all three parts of the hat. Once that was done, I attached millinery wire to the outside edge of the top of the crown using a blanket stitch.

Let me start by saying I really like your writing style. As far as world building vs. plot and the struggle to keep both relevant, have you thought about possibly having something like (though less extensive than) The Silmarillion? Something to expand on the world without it having to be woven completely into the plot. It’s good you’re having fun with your work! Good luck! I can’t wait to see the finished product.
Writing update, Current Struggles: I’m trying to world build without slowing down the action. But I’m also trying to increase the tension and the pace as the story progresses, not startle the reader by throwing them into drama. It’s a hard balancing act, especially since I’m writing fantasy and there’s so much information to impart. The culture, religion, backstories, physical spaces, relationships between characters, while also keeping the plot moving forward.
But on the upside, writing this week has also been a lot of fun. Here’s a snippet of the story so far. (Disclaimer: I may take this out or change it in revision.)
“She pleaded, begged. Her eyelids fluttered and then closed under the pressure of dirt caving in over her body, packing her in, burying her alive, while the Curse drained her of her blood. She couldn’t open her mouth, her eyes, couldn’t move her hands. So she whispered in her mind with everything she had left.
My blood, my magic, for yours. Just this once, I promise, I promise.
Sing us a song, young witch, oh yes, sing us a song. Your words will allow your blood to live even if you should die.
     You want…you want a song?
Oh yes, oh yes, a witch song, a witch song. Sing us a song witch, sing your blood to life.
In her mind, Jo hummed a song that Sofi often sang to Kiera, the first song that came to mind.
If the trees should whistle, should whistle, should whistle, young witch, what should you do, you do, you do? Why give it some water, some water of course.
And if the water should spill, should spill, should spill? Why bless it with magic, with magic, of course.
And should the blessing not work, not work, not work? Why go find a charm, a spell, a chant, young witch.
And if you don’t know a charm, a chant, a spell, a wish? Why ask your clan, your home, your heart, young witch
And if you don’t have a home, a heart, a clan, a love? Why witch, maybe you’re not a witch at all, at all.
Maybe you’re not a witch at all.”
