Loose Diamonds: A Worthwhile Investment?
The demand for loose diamonds is on the rise and for a good reason. Since the value of gold has been slowly but steadily decreasing, the use of diamonds as an investment has become the most sought after alternative.
Despite the surge of interest in diamonds for investment purposes, there are several factors you should consider if you intend to buy loose diamonds. When shopping for diamond jewelry in San Diego, you should know what determines the value of a diamond as well as what you can do to ensure your diamond keeps its worth.
Is buying loose diamonds a good investment?
Loose diamonds have proven to be worthwhile financial hedging tools. Still, many people are hesitant to invest simply because they are not familiar with the benefits that buying diamonds for investment entails.
Why loose diamonds are a good investment
The reasons why loose diamonds are a great alternative investment vehicle are manifold and actually quite obvious. They mostly revolve around the fact that they are a physical commodity that is tangible, small and worth a lot of money. So, if you are ready to invest, consider the following perks:
Storing diamonds is extremely convenient. Their small size allows for excellent portability and storability since the smallest diamond can be worth double or triple compared to gold jewelry of the same size.
A diamond is the hardest substance found on Earth. This means that you can even mount and wear your investment as you can rest assured that nothing will happen to it as long as you take good care of it.
Diamonds are inflation-proof, much like gold, silver and other physical commodities. However, the portability and durability of a diamond gives it an edge over the other commodities.
Things to consider when buying diamonds for investment
Now that you are familiar with the benefits of buying diamonds for investment, you should learn how to shop wisely. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for loose diamonds for investment purposes:
Although diamonds are easy to store, you have to make sure you have somewhere secure to keep them, such as a bank safety deposit or a home safe.
Learn how to determine the value of a diamond. Familiarize yourself with the basics, i.e. the four Cs: clarity, cut, carat, and color.
Consider buying only loose diamonds. Yes, mounted diamonds are wearable, but a loose diamond is easier to evaluate and sell.
Buy natural colored diamonds. While colorless diamonds are great for gifts, pink, green, yellow or blue ones are better for investment purposes since they can be quite rare and desirable.
Purchase only certified diamonds. Buy diamonds with certificates from the Gemological Institute of America to ensure you know exactly what you’re getting.
Do diamonds keep value?
Is a diamond forever? Well, it might be the hardest natural material, but the prices of diamonds have fluctuated considerably over the years as a reflection of supply and demand. That’s why it’s important to know how to determine a diamond’s worth.
How to determine the value of a diamond
The most important factor for discerning a diamond’s worth is its rarity. The rarer a diamond is, the more valuable it is. Rarity and value can be determined by measuring the Four Cs, i.e. Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat Weight:
Color: GIA’s color-grading system begins with D, which represents colorless diamonds, and ends with the letter Z, representing light yellow or brown hues. Although naturally colored diamonds are sought after, a chemically pure diamond is truly colorless and actually very rare and valuable.
Cut: this factor has to do with how well a diamond’s facets interact with light. Diamonds with great interaction with light, as well as symmetry, proportions and polish will naturally be deemed more valuable.
Clarity: GIA’s clarity scale is divided into 11 clarity grades which range from Flawless to I3, the lowest grade. Although it’s extremely rare to find a perfectly pure diamond, the higher its clarity, the higher its value.
Carat Weight: diamonds and gemstones are weighed in metric carats: one carat is equal to 200 milligrams or 0.2 grams. The value of a diamond increases with carat weight, but only if the other three Cs are considered.
What makes a diamond lose its value
When investing in and re-selling diamonds, you need to know how much you can get for your stone. Here are some factors to look out for since they can lower a diamonds value:
Scratches and blemishes on the surface on the diamond
A cloudy brown or yellowish color
Small size and low carat weight
Inclusions in the structure of the diamond, especially visible ones.
Lack of rarity and remarkable characteristics
If you want to ensure that your diamond stays valuable, there are several things you can do to prevent problems which can lower its worth. If you handle the diamond gently, avoid touching it too often and clean it regularly by soaking it in a gentle water and dish soap solution, you should be able to keep your diamond’s value for many years.

Diamond Ring Styles for a Perfect Push Present
What’s the perfect way to show appreciation to the woman who has just given birth to your baby? While some believe that the baby is enough of a gift, many modern men choose to congratulate their partner on her new bundle of joy and show how much they care by giving them a thoughtful birth present.
But how can you best express the gratitude and love a new dad feels? A popular choice, and a classy one at that, is to give a timeless diamond ring to be a keepsake for years to come. If you are a brand new father, you can take your pick of the finest diamond rings in San Diego your partner is sure to love.
Why diamond rings are wonderful birth presents
It’s easy to see why diamond rings are the most popular birth present choice. Diamonds are sophisticated, elegant and ageless and come in a myriad of different styles to match every woman’s personal style. What’s more, a diamond ring can make a marvelous addition to the engagement or wedding rings your partner might already have, to be worn together as a set or only for special occasions.
The best thing about diamond rings as birth presents is that they can be personalized to symbolize the birth of multiple children. Having a lovely set of unique rings representing each of your kids is a brilliant way to express the special love you feel for each of your little darlings.
Which style should I choose?
The diamond ring type you will opt for will depend primarily on your partner’s individual style. To make sure she adores the gift, choose the ring with utmost care, keeping her preferences and interests in mind.
Eternity bands
For a simple yet sophisticated touch, express your neverending love with a stylish diamond eternity ring that never goes out of style. Eternity bands are the ultimate birth presents since they symbolize not only the unwavering devotion you feel for your partner, but also the unending love which exists between the mother and her child. You can play it safe with the most popular style for eternity bands, i.e. the classic diamond version, or intensify the symbolism by including the birthstone of your child.
Stackable rings
If you have or plan to have several children, getting a set of rings made from different metals with diamonds and birthstones for each child is a wonderful idea. Your partner can match them with her engagement or wedding ring, or wear them separately as a seemingly single piece. Stackable rings are a great option since they can be custom made to be as unique as each of your children.
Cocktail rings
While simplicity may be the ultimate sophistication, a touch of eccentricity never hurt anyone. If your partner’s style is bold and quirky, consider treating her with a statement cocktail ring. This style is perfect for adding personal touches since their size allows for a limitless number of combinations to reflect the individuality of your partner. Extravagant statement rings are also a great idea if you plan to have only one child or if your partner doesn’t have an engagement or wedding ring.

Proper Jewelry Storage
Fine jewelry can be as delicate as it is beautiful, and can require a little extra care than one might think. More often than not, we don’t store our treasures properly. This is why your jewelry sometimes ends up in a jumbled mess that takes hours to sort through and untangle. But there are easier methods for storing your fine jewelry items that will keep them safe, secure, and ready for their next wear—and we’re going to share them with you!
Choosing the Best Jewelry Box
The first step to safely storing your jewelry is to select a jewelry box that is designed specifically for fine jewelry storage. These come equipped with soft, fabric lining and several compartments for all of your items. Boxes fashioned from wood or plastic are great for external protection, but don’t always have fabric lining, meaning your jewelry can get scratched or damaged if placed in too carelessly. You want to be sure that each of your pieces has its own space, so as to prevent tangling or tugging, so be sure to shop for a jewelry box large enough to accommodate your collection. Jewelry is susceptible to damage from the elements, such as extreme temperatures or humidity, so you want to make sure that whichever box you choose is stored at room temperature and out of direct sunlight.
Keeping Your Jewelry Clean
It is important to store fine jewelry away from items considered costume. Just like these pieces erode and turn green, they can do the same to your fine jewelry items when stored too closely together. Musty smells can transfer from one item to another, as well as tarnishing and just general dinginess. Cleaning your jewelry box regularly is recommended to prevent these kinds of damages.
Store Items Separately
When storing fine jewelry, you have to consider the various components of each piece. Precious metals and gemstones each have unique properties and requirements for care. Diamonds, for example, are known for their durability. However, they still should be stored away from cleaning products, lotions, soaps, sprays, etc… and should be worn only after these items have been applied. Similarly, pearls are quite susceptible to wear and tear from body oils and sweat which can dull their sheen. Gemstones should be stored in a soft, cool pouch and should be wiped with a gentle cloth regularly to maintain their sparkle and shine. Sterling silver has the tendency to oxidize, meaning you should avoid air and light when storing.
Safety First
It is not only important to make sure that your jewelry has a safe home when unworn, but also crucial that your jewelry box be placed where your belongings are secure from theft. If you have access to a safe or other storage area secured with locks, you can rest easy knowing your jewelry won’t end up in the wrong hands. If you do not have a safe, try to find the most inconspicuous place to store your valuables. For pricier items that are more highly valued, consider jewelry insurance as an additional measure for protecting your belongings. For a relatively low cost, you can have that extra assurance in the event that a worst case scenario happens.
Jewelry Storage at Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers
At Leo Hamel Fine Jewelry & Engagement Rings Store, we boast a vast collection of fine jewelry from designers like Cartier, David Yurman, Tiffany & Co., and more! We also carry a great selection of jewelry boxes from prominent brands like Wolf, who have been designing jewelry storage and watch storage since 1834. Visit our San Diego showroom today! Buying an Engagement Ring Online
San Diegans are spoiled with options when it comes to shopping engagement rings. As you’re searching for the perfect ring to symbolize your love for your sweetheart, you could be facing the dilemma: buy online or in a store? We’ve stated many times why Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers is the best place to buy engagement rings in San Diego, but let’s take a deeper look at this from the consumer’s perspective.
Sure, online shopping sounds easy and effortless. Who doesn’t love shopping from the comfort of home? On top of that, some online retailers lure customers with the promise of “great deals,” so not only can you save time shopping online, but you might also save money. Though we offer jewelry for sale on our website, we always encourage our customers to visit and see the jewelry that interests them first before purchasing. Here’s why we prefer in-store purchases over those made online.
The Internet is an Unregulated Marketplace
You don’t really know who you’re dealing with. There are good and bad retailers, selling diamonds of varying quality. Though customer reviews and testimonials may be a good indicator of the seller’s professionalism, you would need a large number of positive reviews to assure yourself of the seller’s trustworthiness. The problem with buying an engagement ring online is that each and every diamond is unique, so while one customer may have gotten a great diamond, you may not be so lucky.
You Don’t Get to See the Ring
With online ring shopping, you don’t get to see the actual ring until it arrives at your doorstep. When photographed, a ring may look stunning. On one hand, a photo may do a ring justice, but the opposite could be true as well. When you see it in person, it may appear different – larger, smaller, the colors may look duller or more vibrant, etc.
Diamonds cannot confidently be assessed from a photo. An online retailer may provide a diamond certificate from a reputable institution, like the Gemological Institute of America, but this piece of paper is not a guarantee of beauty. In other words, a diamond with an excellent score across the 4 Cs may actually appear to be lower quality than a diamond that is less perfect overall, but with an amazing cut that maximizes sparkle. Two diamonds that have identical grades on paper can look quite different when you see them or when they are mounted.
Finally, bear in mind that jewelers who are in the business for decades would always rather buy a piece of jewelry they can see. Why wouldn’t you want to do the same, especially for something as important as an engagement ring?
You Can’t Depend on Online Retailers Long Term
When buying an engagement ring online, you want to feel as though you can rely on the information a retailer gives you about your diamond. Some online retailers may be misusing terms related to diamonds with the intent of manipulating you into a purchase, or they may simply not know enough about the subject to use the terms with confidence.
For example, they could describe a diamond as “ideal” based just on their impression of the diamond, not the actual definition of an “ideal diamond.” If they offer you a report, it could be an unreliable one. You should only trust diamond reports issued by reputable laboratories such as the Gemological Institute of America. Online retailers also can’t offer you important after-sale services such as resizing, cleaning, upgrading, tightening, etc.
Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers is Your Destination for Diamond Engagement Rings
When you begin browsing for diamond engagement rings in San Diego, we encourage you to focus on value, rather than a great deal. At Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers, we are always committed to offering our customers the finest-quality jewelry at the most reasonable prices. We are proud to offer new and like-new jewelry, as well as new and pre-owned watches in the largest independent jewelry collection in San Diego. We also offer a full range of repair and cleaning services.
So, when shopping for an engagement ring, wouldn’t you rather go with someone you can rely on for many years to come? Stop by our San Diego jewelry store today and we’ll help you find the perfect ring to cherish for a lifetime.

Presidential Watches: U.S. Leaders & Their Favorite Timepieces
It has long been custom for the president of the United States to carry or wear a timepiece. In fact, every leader of this country since 1789 has owned a watch of some sort. Some presidents were horology gurus, while others simply wore a watch out of necessity. No matter, watchmakers from around the world have looked to the leaders of the United States to wear their pieces. With presidents constantly being covered by the media, there is no better way for a watch brand to gain exposure. Not to mention, luxury watch brands want their products to be associated with power and nobility. From George Washington to Donald Trump, pocket watch to wrist watch, and Timex to Rolex—presidential watch favorites vary by individual. Some of these choices may indeed surprise you!
George Washington
The first president of the United States owned a few different pocket watches. One, a Swiss made piece from an unknown watchmaker, was engraved with “1775/G. Washington” on the inside movement cover. He was said to have later gifted the watch to friend Colonel Thomas Johnson, the first governor of Maryland.
Another of his pocket watches, designed by Jean-Antoine Lépine, was obtained in Paris by fellow statesman and founding father, Gouverneur Morris. Morris asked Washington if there was anything he may retrieve for the president while away in Europe, and this was the one item he requested. Lépine was a famous watchmaker who worked for the likes of Louis XVI, Louis XV, and Napoleon Bonaparte.
At the time of his presidency, our nation’s capital was in Philadelphia. This is where Washington bought one of his pocket watches from watchmaker Ephraim Clark. It is known as the McCabe watch, named after its maker James McCabe. It is said that Washington regularly visited Ephraim Clark to compare his piece with their regulator.
Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln is said to have owned several pocket watches. One of these pocket watches has a unique story, and was recently deconstructed to reveal a secret message left there for the president at the start of the Civil War. This particular gold pocket watch was purchased by Lincoln from Springfield jeweler George Chatterton. As the story goes, watchmaker Jonathan Dillon was repairing Lincoln’s watch in Washington D.C. when word spread that battle had broken out at Fort Sumter. Dillon claimed to have inscribed a message on the inside of the watch, later writing to the New York Times to confess his story. In 2009, the Smithsonian was contacted by a relative of Dillon’s who had uncovered the New York Times article while researching his genealogy. He simply asked the Smithsonian whether the inscription existed, a question to which they did not have an answer. This prompted the museum to do something unprecedented and allow the piece to be taken apart. Upon disassembly, Dillon’s secret message was in fact revealed, though the message inscribed was slightly different than what he originally reported to the newspaper. So, Lincoln wore this watch, all the while unknowingly carrying Dillon’s message with him. Imagine having that story to tell your family!
Warren G. Harding
The 29th President of the United States was a Freemason, and carried a Masonic watch. The device featured hour markers represented by Masonic symbols, such as an hourglass and compass. The case was triangular shaped, and always included the famous all-seeing eye, again reflecting Masonic symbolism. These watches were produced exclusively by Hiram Watch Inc., a company named for one of the key figures in Masonic lore, Hiram Abiff.
Harry S. Truman
Harry Truman owned a number of presidential watches, including a Gallet Flight Officer and a Vulcain Cricket. The Gallet Flying Officer, referred to as the Flight Officer, was one of the first waterproof chronographs. This was also the first watch to tell world time. The serial number found on Truman’s model indicates that his may have been an original model, if not the original model.
Upon completing his tenure, the White House News Photographers gifted President Truman with a Vulcain Cricket with the words “One More Please” engraved on the back. Of course, this was a request the photographers were used to making of the president and a phrase they likely barked at him on more than one occasion.
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Like Truman, Eisenhower also had a Vulcain Cricket. It was the watch he primarily wore while in office, though he had others. He owned watches from brands like Rolex and Hamilton, and was even featured in a 1946 advertisement for Heuer. Eisenhower was also the first president to have a Rolex, having been gifted a personalized Rolex Datejust by the company itself.
John F. Kennedy
John F. Kennedy was known to have owned several watches including models from Omega, Cartier, and Bulova. Perhaps the most famous JFK watch is the Rolex Day-Date that was gifted to the president by Marilyn Monroe in 1962. Kennedy is said to have immediately rejected the gift, advising one of his staff to “get rid of it.” Of course, the leader of the free world wouldn’t want there to be any evidence of his extramarital affair. The watch was sold at auction in 2005, engraved with the message, “Jack/With love as always/from/Marilyn/May 29th, 1962,” along with the original box and a poem that Monroe had penned to her lover.
Kennedy’s wife Jacqueline gifted him with a Cartier watch for their fourth wedding anniversary, prior to him becoming president. This is the watch that Kennedy was wearing at the time he was assassinated and it is reported to have been handed back to Jackie at the hospital, following the tragedy.
Lyndon B. Johnson
Like his predecessor before him, LBJ had quite the collection of watches. He owned a Patek Philippe with the proverb “Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You” on the dial, a declaration he commonly spoke. Johnson also had a Vulcain Cricket, a Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox, a Hamilton Pacer, and a Rolex Day-Date. President Johnson is the commander-in-chief most associated with the Rolex brand, as he was the first to wear his Day-Date on what is now called the “President” bracelet. The Day-Date model has actually been given the nickname “Rolex President” and it is often referred to this way in the watch world.
Bill Clinton
President Bill Clinton is the greatest watch enthusiast of all the United States presidents, especially since leaving office. However, while campaigning and serving his term as president, Clinton famously wore a $50 Timex Ironman. Clinton was the first president to steer away from wearing expensive, luxury watch brands while in office. His unsightly Timex was a far cry from the Swiss-made designer brands that his predecessors before him were so fond of, and it even earned attention and criticism from the Washington Post’s style section following the inaugural ball.
Despite being poked fun at for his choice in fashion, former president Clinton now boasts an exceptional collection of timepieces from brands like Franck Muller, Cartier, Quinting, Panerai, Shinola, and more. He has been photographed wearing so many different watches since leaving office, that it has been challenging for experts to piece together exactly what he’s collected.
George W. Bush
Similar to Clinton, George W. Bush wanted his choice of watch to reflect that he was a man of the people. Rather than opting for a luxury timepiece, Bush regularly wore a Timex i-Control and a Timex Indiglo while campaigning and in office. In 2007, it was reported that Bush’s watch had been stolen from his wrist while he was greeting a crowd and shaking hands in Albania. The White House later corrected these reports, stating that the president had simply removed the watch and placed it into his pocket for safe keeping during the encounter.
Barack Obama
During his time as a senator, Barack Obama was frequently seen wearing a TAG Heuer 1500 Two-Tone Diver. After being elected to the presidency, he was gifted a Jorg Gray Chronograph with the Secret Service seal on the dial. It was a birthday gift given to the president by his security detail and ended up being the watch he wore most often. Prior to Obama wearing the brand, Jorg Gray was a relatively unknown watch company. However, demand skyrocketed after an aficionado uncovered the brand and model that Obama had been photographed wearing. Today, the former president is often seen sporting a simple New Balance watch.
Donald Trump
Our current president had his own line of quartz watches in 2005, the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection. He hasn’t been pictured wearing any pieces from his collection; however, he is known to have a few luxury watches that he wears. He is regularly photographed interchangeably wearing a yellow gold Rolex Day-Date, a Patek Philippe Ellipse, and a Vacheron Constantin Historiques Ultra-Fine 1968.
Presidential Watches in San Diego
Many of these watches were gifted, and almost all of them included personalized details specific to each president. However, replicas are still in circulation today and are available right here in San Diego! At Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers, we have one of the largest selection of luxury watches, both new and pre-owned. We carry an array of fine, Swiss-made brands including Rolex, Omega, TAG Heuer, Patek Philippe, Tissot, and more. Visit our showroom today and let us help you find your next beloved timepiece.

Simple Guide to Resetting a Diamond
There are a number of reasons for wanting to reset a diamond. Perhaps you wish to upgrade your original setting, or maybe you’ve inherited a loose diamond that you’d like to have placed in a new setting. Whatever the reason may be, there are some things to consider before you decide on resetting a diamond.
Choosing to reset a diamond can provide an opportunity for you to add embellishments and personalize your ring to your precise tastes. Sometimes, when couples wed, they can’t necessarily afford extravagant rings. But with time and growth, you may find yourself in the place to upgrade.
Tips for upgrading your setting
If you’re looking to upgrade your engagement ring or design a setting for a loose diamond, remember these 6 tips while shopping.
Consider diamond accents
If you’re looking to enhance your existing setting or to set a loose diamond, the easiest way to add some extra glamour is to choose diamond accents. Take a plain band from simple to stunning by adding pavé diamonds around some or all the ring. If you’d like to upgrade your band without the price tag of diamonds, you can also consider engraving for a special touch.
Besides the band, you can also choose to have smaller diamonds flanking your center stone to make a three-stone ring. Three-stone rings are both striking and symbolic. Additional diamonds will draw the eye to the center stone, making it appear larger. For a unique touch, consider adding colored gemstones to offset your center diamond. Gemstones like sapphires and rubies compliment a diamond beautifully.
Add a halo to your center stone
Adding a halo to your center stone makes for an entirely new looking ring. It also helps to catch more light to make your ring appear extra sparkly. Because a halo surrounds the center stone so closely, it gives the illusion that your center stone is larger than it may really be.
Choose a new metal
Perhaps when your ring was originally purchased, platinum was the most popular metal. Now with the popularity of metals like rose gold, and the resurgence of yellow gold, you may desire something different for your diamond. An easy way to achieve an entirely new look for your ring is to choose a new metal for your setting. There are even mixed metal settings that are less common, but beautiful nonetheless.
Change your setting altogether
Most diamond engagement rings include a cathedral setting where the diamond is raised. Though diamonds are tough, this setting isn’t the best to protect it from harm. Someone who is really active and lives an on-the-go lifestyle might want to consider something like a bezel setting. Bezel settings surround the diamond on all sides, protecting it from potential damage.
Remember your budget
Resetting a diamond is a fairly easy thing for a jeweler to do once all of the specifications have been made. But this doesn’t mean it is going to be inexpensive. If you already have the diamond, you’ll certainly save some money. However, the more detailed the setting you choose, the more it is likely to cost.
Ask questions about resetting your stone
Trusting your diamond with others is difficult, so you want to make sure to find a reputable jeweler to reset your stone. While your diamond is in their hands, jewelers may offer insurance to protect against theft or loss. It’s also important to check if the job will be done in-house or will be sent out. If your diamond is to be sent elsewhere, ask how they’ll be safely transporting it. You can also ask them to provide examples of work they’ve already done or if they have any references from former clients. A good jeweler will explain the resetting process to you and will be happy to answer any questions that you have before asking you to commit to anything.
Finding a jeweler to reset your diamond
If you’re looking for a reputable jeweler to reset your diamond, your search is over. Leo Hamel Fine Jewelry & Engagement Rings Store has been a trusted San Diego establishment for nearly 40 years. Our skilled Master Jewelers are expertly trained and are eager to help you create the ring of your dreams. With a simple resetting, you could have a ring that looks entirely new!

A Definitive Guide to Rolex Bracelets
When it comes to Rolex watches, there’s no shortage of options to choose from. Whether you’re a deep sea diver, a daring mountain climber, or dedicated speleologist, there’s a Rolex watch that can assist you with just about any task imaginable. For over a century, Rolex has been consistently producing luxurious, highly sophisticated timepieces that have earned them a reputation for excellence. It’s no wonder the Swiss watch brand has such a loyal following of fans and collectors. In addition to their unparalleled precision and accuracy, Rolex timepieces are exceptionally classy and stylish, thanks in part to a selection of bracelet styles designed to match any outfit or occasion. Rolex bracelets are yet another example of the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship, designed to be comfortable, durable, and forever fashionable. Before you consider purchasing a Rolex watch, learn all you need to know about the various Rolex bracelet types here!
Rolex Oyster Bracelet
The Rolex Oyster bracelet is one of the brand’s most widely recognized and requested bracelet styles. The smooth, flat links pair perfectly with sportier watches like the Daytona or Submariner, as well as with dressier styles like the Datejust and Oyster Perpetual. Besides being the most popular bracelet type, the Oyster bracelet options are also the most varied, offered in a range of materials including stainless steel, 950 platinum, and two-tone Rolesor, as well as 18k white, yellow, or Everose gold. The Rolex Oyster bracelet is also available in various sizes to fit a selection of watches. So, whether you’re wearing a dainty Lady-Datejust or an oversized Deepsea dive watch, you can rock the Oyster bracelet with confidence and ease.
Rolex Jubilee Bracelet
In 1945, Rolex celebrated their 40th anniversary by debuting the first Datejust watch equipped with a brand-new bracelet style, known as the Jubilee. Each link of a Jubilee bracelet consists of five separate pieces, weaved together in an intricate pattern. Its dressier appearance makes the Jubilee bracelet perfect for black-tie soirées and business occasions. Since its unveiling more than seventy years ago, the Rolex Jubilee bracelet has retained much of its original design with few minor modifications, a testament to its timelessness. Originally, the bracelet was only offered in solid gold, though Rolex later released stainless steel, and two-tone styles. While you may find a Jubilee bracelet on a vintage Daytona or GMT-Master, nowadays it’s exclusively reserved for the Rolex Datejust line of watches.
Rolex President Bracelet
The Rolex President bracelet debuted in 1956, on the brand’s first Day-Date watch. It has since become widely recognized for its trademark semicircular, three-piece links, as well as its popularity among important diplomatic figures, including several U.S. presidents. The President bracelet is never offered in stainless steel, and is instead available in a range of precious metals including platinum and varying shades of 18k gold. It is used primarily for Rolex Day-Dates, as well as some Lady Datejust models. A Lady Datejust with a President bracelet is known as the Lady President.
Rolex Pearlmaster Bracelet
For ladies who love ultra-elegant watches, nothing dazzles quite like a Rolex Datejust Pearlmaster. The Pearlmaster is a line of luxurious ladies watches that come decorated in brilliant diamonds and other gemstones. The Pearlmaster bracelet was designed specifically for this line of watches in 1992. Each five-piece link is crafted from 18k white, yellow, or Everose gold, and often includes a mesmerizing arrangement of diamonds. Considering a Rolex Pearlmaster for yourself or someone you love? Be prepared to fork over some serious cash, as one of these elaborate timepieces can cost upwards of $100,000 brand new.
Rolex Integrated Bracelets
In the 1970’s, the world of watchmaking experienced what is known as the Quartz Crisis. Quartz watches began replacing mechanical watches as the most popular watch type. This impacted the Swiss watchmaking industry, and to avoid falling behind the trend, Rolex released a line of quartz watches, named the Oysterquartz. These watches came equipped with their own unique, integrated bracelets. Rolex took the designs of their popular Oyster, Jubilee, and President bracelets and adapted them to give the Oysterquartz models their own distinguished look and style.
Rolex Leather Strap
Rolex is most well-known for their metal bracelets, though they do offer leather options as well. Very early Rolex watches were crafted with leather straps; however, when the brand began manufacturing tool watches like the Explorer, they found that metal bracelets were more rugged and durable. Classic Rolex models like the Cellini still come with a leather strap, ideal for pairing with dressy attire.
Rolex Oysterflex Bracelet
The latest addition to the Rolex bracelet lineup is the Oysterflex. Though the Oysterflex looks like any ordinary rubber strap, its design is actually pretty sophisticated. An Oysterflex bracelet begins from a titanium and nickel metal alloy blade that is dipped and coated in elastomer. This clever construction ensures that the bracelet is as sturdy as it is sporty and stylish. The Oysterflex bracelet was first featured on the Rolex Everose Yacht-Master, but now can be found on other popular models like the Cosmograph Daytona.

Most Commonly Used Gemstone Treatments
Have you ever been shopping for gemstone jewelry and heard your jeweler refer to various types of “gemstone treatments”? This term is used to describe the techniques used on gemstones to make them look better, brighter, and more colorful. While you may be inclined to believe that treating gemstones is shady business, there are actually a number of treatments that are widely used and accepted by the jewelry industry. Gemstone treatments serve to enhance a stones appearance without negatively affecting their value. On the other hand, there are some treatments that are widely discouraged, which we’ll explain in more detail.
Gemstone treatments are not typically visible to the inexperienced eye, which is why sellers are legally obligated to disclose any treatments used on a gemstone before it is purchased. A trusted jeweler, like Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers, will always be transparent with their customers about the gemstone treatments they use. If you’ve ever wondered about gemstone treatments and how they work, you’ve come to the right place. We’re listing some of the most commonly used gemstone treatments, determining which work best, and which are most easily detected with the amateur eye.
1. Bleaching Treatment
Bleach is a chemical used to alter the color of a porous gem, such as jadeite or pearl. This treatment helps to lighten a gemstone’s color and remove unwanted discoloration. Bleach treatments are quite common, and nearly impossible to detect as a singular process. However, there are generally two steps to bleach treating gemstones. The second step, known as polymer impregnation, can be detected by an expert using advanced analysis conducted in a specialized laboratory. While there are no price differences between bleached and unbleached gems, the acidic compound found in bleach can damage the structure of the gemstone and leave it more vulnerable to breaking. Additionally, bleaching a gem can enhance its porosity, making it more susceptible to absorbing bodily oils and liquids.
2. Irradiation Treatment
Many gemstones are subjected to different forms of artificial radiation in order to alter their color. This process is often followed up with heat treatments to help further enhance the color, if necessary. Irradiating gemstones involves bombarding them with particles such as electrons or neutrons on a subatomic level. A shopper might be worried about whether this process could affect their health, but the effects of the radiation are short and there are strict regulations that require these treated gems to be thoroughly tested and held until they are perfectly safe.
One common gemstone that is frequently exposed to irradiation treatment is blue topaz. In fact, almost every blue topaz on the market has been subjected to irradiation. This process creates vivid shades of blue that are not achievable in an untreated topaz. Depending on how long the topaz is subjected to radiation, its resulting color can range from Swiss Blue to London Blue. London Blue is the least common type because it requires the expensive process of neutron exposure.
Irradiation treatment is nearly impossible to recognize in most gems. Although, you may be able to identify an irradiated gemstone by examining the intensity of its color. Deep blue topaz, for example, simply doesn’t occur naturally. Therefore, if you notice a topaz gemstone with an unusually vibrant color, you can assume it has undergone some form of irradiation.
3. Dyeing Treatment
Dyeing treatments involve introducing a colored substance into gemstones that have surface-reaching fractures or a porous structure, in order to modify their color. Gems like agate, onyx, pearl and coral are often subjected to this treatment in order to ensure an even coloring. In fact, dyeing agate dates back to ancient Roman civilizations.
In many cases, dyeing can be detected under a magnifying glass using a diffused light source. Experts can identify concentrated color on the surface and inside the fractures of a stone. However, there are certain gemstones like jade or turquoise where dyeing might not be as apparent. Dyeing treatments are fairly common within the industry, especially for colored pearls.
Dyed gems tend to be more susceptible to fading, so it’s best to avoid direct sunlight. Additionally, solvents like acetone and rubbing alcohol can dissolve the gemstone’s dye, further dulling its color.
4. Heat Treatment
Undoubtedly the oldest practice in the book, heat treatment has been used for thousands of years to enhance the color and clarity of gemstones. Over the centuries, heat treatment has evolved, and now involves high tech computer-controlled furnaces.
Heat treatment is a completely legitimate practice. In fact, it is a natural continuation of the process that took place inside the earth’s crust when the gemstones were formed. Without heat treatments, we wouldn’t have nearly as many colored gemstones to enjoy.
The process involves heating the stone to high temperatures, which triggers chemical reactions that change the color of the stone. The two most important factors in this process are the temperature and the environment. Heating the gemstone provokes various chemical exchanges between the stone and the atmosphere on a molecular level. This helps to achieve one of the two most commonly desired effects of heat treatment: changing the gemstone’s clarity or color. For example, heat treatment is used to remove green undertones in an aquamarine or to produce deeper shades of blue in a topaz.
While heat treatment might not be obvious to you, an expert can often determine whether a gemstone has been subjected to heat by analyzing inclusions through a microscope, such as tiny crystals that melt when a gemstone is exposed to extreme temperatures.
5. Coating Treatment
Coating is a process used to enhance the appearance of the gem’s surface by adding a coloring agent to the entire gem, or just a small portion. This treatment is often referred to as backing. Gemstone coating is fairly commonplace, and can be easily identified by an expert unless the film is colorless. Quartz and topaz are two of the most commonly coated gemstones, evident from their unnaturally bold color and iridescence.
Thin-film coatings are susceptible to scratching, as they tend to be much softer than a gem’s natural surface. Be sure to avoid contact with abrasive objects, and store your treated gemstone in a soft, dry place when you’re not wearing it.
6. Laser Treatment
Laser treatment is used to drill small holes into a gemstone in order to reduce the appearance of an inclusion, or dark spot within. An inclusion can be further vaporized or bleached if the laser does not burn through it completely. This treatment is reserved exclusively for diamonds, as they’re the only gemstone strong enough to withstand the high heat from the laser. This treatment is very easily detectable due to the microscopic laser holes that can be spotted under magnification. Laser treatments are widely accepted, and do not affect the durability of a diamond. In addition, diamonds that have been treated in this manner require no special care.
7. Fracture Filling
Gemstones with surface fractures are subjected to fracture filling. This treatment involves using wax, glass, or borax to fill in these tiny cavities. Not only does this smooth out the surface, it can also improve the gemstone’s clarity, stability, and overall appearance. Such treatments can easily be identified by a trained gemologist using proper magnification.
The practice of fracture filling is a fairly recent one, though it is used on a number of popular gemstones like rubies, emeralds, and diamonds. So far, this technique has yielded great results, making gemstones more durable and extending their longevity. Depending on what was used as filler, some treated gemstones may require extra care. Drastic fluctuations in temperature and air pressure can actually remove the filler substance, so practice caution.
8. Diffusion
The process of diffusion involves heating a gemstone to very high temperatures, while adding chemicals like beryllium. This strategy serves to enhance or change a gemstone’s color. Diffusion treatments are common in gemstones like ruby, blue sapphire or green topaz. The original gemstone material is often much paler when compared to the final product, and the results are permanent.
Diffusion can be difficult to detect, though it can be confirmed in some cases using tools like a spectrometer. If you are thinking of purchasing a gemstone that has been subjected to diffusion treatment, bear in mind that the color may only be surface deep. Damage such as scratching or chipping could ruin the appearance of the stone by exposing its untreated surface.
 9. Oiling
Oil treatments are used to smooth visible fissures and cracks on a gemstone with fillers like epoxy or polymer. This technique has been practiced for centuries, especially on emeralds which are known to have many internal fractures. The result is a drastic improvement of the gemstone’s brilliance and transparency.
Oiling is accepted within the industry, and while the treatment may be effective, it is not permanent. After some time, gemstones will need to undergo additional oiling treatments to keep them at their best. Gemstones are most commonly treated with cedar oil, a natural product of the cedar tree. It’s a colorless, viscous substance that is used to fill the fractures because it has a similar refractive index to the gemstone. The oil is applied along with heat and pressure to properly fill any fissures. Depending on how many fractures were filled the treatment can be significant, moderate or minor.
While the oiling treatment described above is considered a standard procedure, there is another very similar technique that is highly discouraged. It involves gemstones like emeralds and rubies being treated with colored oils that are meant to conceal their true color and the severity of their fractures. This is not a widely accepted practice, as it seeks to mask the true state of the gemstone. Fortunately, if you are buying jewelry from reputable vendors, you have nothing to worry about, as they won’t attempt to sell gemstones that have been treated in this way.

Solitaire Engagement Rings: From Modest to Striking
When it comes to engagement rings, few styles can rival the timeless elegance of a classic solitaire. A solitaire consists of a single center stone, typically secured with prongs, resting atop a solid metal band. Thanks to Charles Lewis Tiffany, the six-prong, round solitaire is now widely recognized as the quintessential diamond engagement ring. For those brides-to-be who live by the motto “less is more,” but who don’t wish to sacrifice sparkle, a radiant diamond solitaire may be the perfect choice. But, if she prefers a ring with a little something extra, she can still enjoy the subtlety of a classic diamond solitaire with her own personal twist. In this article, we’ll reveal our easiest tips and tricks to take your delicate diamond solitaire from modest to striking.
Pick a Colorful Center Stone
One easy way to spice up a solitaire engagement ring is to opt for a colorful center stone rather than a traditional colorless diamond. Choose from a selection of vivid colored diamonds and precious gemstones to find the one that best fits your future bride. Give her ring a personal touch by selecting her birthstone or the gem that corresponds with a time that’s significant to you both, like the month you first met. Each time she catches a glimpse of her ring, she’ll be reminded of the sweet sentiment behind it. Both rubies and sapphires are ideal for engagement rings because they’re nearly as hard as diamonds, with a Moh’s rating of 9. This means they’re durable and able to easily withstand everyday wear and tear.
Get Creative with Your Setting
When you envision a solitaire engagement ring, you probably imagine the Tiffany setting we previously mentioned—a six-prong, round diamond ring. Though this style is most popular, there are plenty of other settings known to beautifully enhance a center diamond, or colored gemstone. A bezel setting, for example, frames a center diamond with a thin metal rim. This ensures that the stone is safe and secure from the hazards of daily wear. On the other hand, a cathedral setting elevates the center stone with thin metal arches, giving the ring just the right amount of height. When situated in this way, a diamond can appear larger than it actually is.
Select a Unique Shape
Who said a diamond solitaire has to be round? There are a variety of glittering diamond shapes to choose from that can add a touch of distinctiveness to her ring. Princess and cushion cuts are popular alternatives to the traditional round brilliant diamond. Though, if she prefers something a bit more contemporary, pear and oval cuts are two favorites that have been spotted on the hands of fashion-forward celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Blake Lively. Fancy diamond shapes are one of the hottest engagement ring trends of the moment, and one you can expect to see much more of in the coming months.
Choose a Diamond Band
If she loves the look of a solitaire, but you still want to add some extra glam to her ring, you can do so by adding diamond accents to the ring’s band. Diamond accents can help to amplify the sparkle of a center stone without costing you a fortune. Because diamonds are priced by carat, adding small carat diamond accents is often more cost effective than opting for a large center stone.

2019 Spring Fashion Trends
Spring is in the air, and we couldn’t be more eager to welcome the warm weather, beautiful blossoms, and the flurry of new fashion trends expected to emerge. Stores are already discounting their winter wear and making room to roll out the latest Spring styles. If you haven’t had a chance to refresh your wardrobe with new finds for Spring, don’t sweat it, there’s still time. And in case you need a little inspiration before you shop, we’ve composed a list of our favorite Spring fashion trends for 2019, so you can navigate the stores like a pro.
1. Statement Sneakers
This Spring, step up your street style with a pair of funky statement sneakers. They’re the perfect shoe for those days when you just want to be comfy, but don’t want to skimp on style. Platforms, high tops, and colorful neon kicks will be this season’s favored footwear, with designers like Alexander McQueen, Prada, and Balenciaga debuting their own edgy creations on the runways of Fashion Week. Statement sneakers paired with casual boyfriend jeans or cargo pants make for a cool, laid-back look that’s ideal for every day.
2. Feathers & Fringe
Do you enjoy dressing up in fun, flamboyant attire that matches your vivacious personality? If so, you’ll love turning heads in Spring 2019’s most exciting trend—feathers and fringe. Feel ultra-glamorous on your next night out with a metallic fringe dress or a daring fringe jumpsuit. Or, if you’re truly feeling fearless with your choice of fashion, opt for a colorful feathered skirt that will swing and sway as you move. After all, fashion should be fun and expressive, not boring and lifeless!
4. Neutrals
Despite a clear affinity for colorful and creative apparel, designers also exhibited quite a few head-to-toe neutral looks on the Spring 2019 runways. To pull off this look without looking dull and dreary, we recommend mixing your tones and textures. Try pairing a silky nude blouse with a camel pair of trousers and strappy pair of ivory sandals. And don’t forget to accessorize! An over-sized straw bag makes a charming addition to any neutral look, or to add a bit of elegance, try a set of gold chain necklaces.
3. Pleats
Spring 2019 fashion seems to be about designers re-imagining tried and true designs with a fresh, contemporary spin. One such example is the resurgence of micro-pleats. Pleated clothing is designed to be lightweight, breathable, and easy to wear, which is perfect for the warmer temperatures of spring and summer. A romantic pleated skirt is a must-have for spring that can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. Choose a subtle color like blush pink to match with your sultriest stilettos or pair of feminine flats. If you prefer something a bit bolder, opt for a pop of color or patterned pleats. Just be sure that whatever you decide to wear on top is subtle enough to avoid looking too gaudy.
5. Floral Prints
Nothing says spring like beautiful, bright floral patterns, and this season is no exception. Designers like Dolce & Gabbana and Versace took this trend to the next level for their Spring 2019 runway shows, with models rocking head to toe prints that looked to be maniacally mixed and matched. If you’re like most people, the fanciful fashion seen on the runway isn’t quite sensible for everyday wear, but that doesn’t mean you can’t modify the look to be more practical. Consider incorporating floral accessories, like a handbag or pair of heels.
6. Cargo Pants
As Spring quickly approaches, expect to see a huge comeback of cargo pants. In fact, utilitarian work wear was a recurring theme on the runways of Prada, Valentino, and more, though these cargo pants are distinctly different than the pair from Gap that you wore as a kid. Redesigned for the modern fashionista, these cargo pants come in a variety of colors, styles, and silhouettes so there’s really something for everyone. Combine a chic pair of white cargo pants with your favorite rocker tee, a distressed jean jacket, and a pair of standout sneakers, and you have the perfect casual, carefree ensemble for brunch or a shopping day.
7. Animal Prints
Take a walk on the wild side this Spring with the runway’s most exotic trend—animal print. Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, Tom Ford, and many more unveiled their own collections of animal print clothing and accessories for Spring 2019. Make a statement in matching leopard separates, like a high-waist pair of pants and matching jacket. Throw this over a solid black blouse or tank, and pair with black pointed boots for a look that’s equal parts sultry and sophisticated.
8. Bucket Hats
As a nod to ‘90s era fashion, this Spring’s go-to head wear will be bucket hats. This is an easy trend to adopt given the sun shines nearly year round here in southern California. Sport this look with a loose linen blouse and relaxed trousers for the perfect beachy ensemble. You’ll fit right in whether you’re cruising the boardwalk on a bike or exploring the various shops and restaurants by the beach.
9. Crochet
Planning a tropical getaway for spring or summer 2019? Stay cool and look resort-ready in crochet clothing, another trend born straight from the runways of Fashion Week. These pieces are a far cry from those you might’ve found in your grandmother’s closet. Designers have gotten creative with crochet, incorporating into everything from shoes, to handbags, to entire ensembles. To achieve this look with ease, try rocking a crochet cover-up over your swimsuit or a boho crochet dress. Or, if you prefer trendy accessories instead, find yourself a cute crochet handbag.
10. Short Suits
When it comes to Spring 2019 work wear trends, it’s all about sassy and sporty short suits. For those who don’t prefer wearing skirts, this is a cool and comfortable alternative to the traditional pantsuit. Opt for a pastel colored short suit, like periwinkle blue or mauve. Combine with a knockout pair of stilettos, and you’ll be ready to conquer whatever the work day throws your way, and you’ll look great doing it!

Classic Engagement Ring Styles for the Traditional Bride
Shopping for an engagement ring poses one big question, do you choose something trendy, or go for something traditional? Sure, every lady loves to gawk over dazzling and decorative engagement rings, but there’s nothing quite like a classic diamond ring that has outlasted varying trends. Timeless designs like a sparkling solitaire will simply never go out of style and will always make an elegant and enduring choice. If you love the simplicity and sophistication of a classic engagement ring, you have some splendid options to choose from. The following are just a handful of our favorite classic engagement ring styles for the traditional bride-to-be.
Solitaires
There’s nothing quite as beautiful as a glittering solitaire engagement ring. Most people imagine round brilliant solitaires, which are undeniably most popular, though there are plenty of other styles that are equally as impressive. For a unique spin on the classic solitaire, opt for a fancy shaped center stone like a pear or oval cut. Or, if you prefer, add a touch of distinctiveness to your ring by choosing a romantic precious metal like rose gold. Can’t decide which metal is right for your ring? Nowadays, it’s perfectly acceptable to pair different metals with each other, so feel free to add intimate mixed metal details to your ring.
Three-stone
If you’re searching for a classic engagement ring style that’s packed full of meaning and symbolism, consider a three-stone ring, sometimes referred to as a past, present, and future ring. Three-stone engagement rings are as sentimental as they are beautiful, with each individual diamond representing a stage of life with your loved one—the past, present, and the future. For religious couples who hold their faith dear, these three stones can also be thought to represent the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. No matter what a three stone ring means to you and your future bride, there’s no doubt that each time she catches a glimpse of her ring, she’ll be reminded of the sweet sentiment behind it.
Solitaire with Pavé Band
Do you love the look of a solitaire, but long for a little extra sparkle? The simplest solution to this dilemma is to opt for a pavé band, fitted with several small diamonds that add just the right amount of radiance and glamour to a ring. Pavé is derived from the French word for “paved,” which explains why a pavé engagement ring resembles a narrow pathway paved with beautiful, glittering diamonds. Our best tip for choosing a pavé band? If you anticipate having to resize your ring down the road, check that the pavé diamonds won’t interfere with any future modifications.
Pavé Halo
While some women prefer the minimalist style of a pavé band, others favor the grandeur of a pavé halo instead. Halos have been a favorite of fashionable brides since the early 1920’s, and are still considered a contemporary classic by today’s standards. A halo is a little crown of small diamonds or other gemstones that encircle a ring’s center stone. Not only is this a budget friendly option, but it also helps to intensify a ring’s brilliance. You’ll save money opting for smaller diamonds, and you won’t have to sacrifice any sparkle!
Cushion Cut with Halo
Looking for a classic engagement ring with a contemporary twist? Cushion cut diamonds are the second most popular shape after round brilliant cuts, offering slightly less scintillation but a greater amount of fire. A diamond’s fire refers to the colorful sparkle that you see when the gem is exposed to light. Cushion cut diamonds are often set in a diamond halo which helps to draw out the fire and brilliance that this shape is known for. Some of the most famous diamonds in the world are cushion cuts, including the mysterious Hope Diamond and the yellow Tiffany Diamond. It’s no wonder the shape has been popular for nearly two centuries!
Sapphire with Diamond Halo
In 1981, Prince Charles popped the question to Lady Diana Spencer. Initially, he proposed without a ring, but later presented the future princess with a series of options to choose from. She selected an oval shaped blue sapphire ring with a dazzling diamond halo that would become the envy of women all around the world. Nowadays, with gemstone engagement rings becoming ever more popular, this is still one of the most in-demand designs. Sapphires make the perfect choice for engagement rings, as they’re nearly as hard as diamonds, making them extra durable.

How to Spot Fake Diamonds
Let’s face it- diamonds are expensive. While a diamond is an expense that is well worth it, unfortunately there are times when you don’t receive exactly what you pay for. It’s a terrible feeling when you pay thousands of dollars for a diamond and later find out it’s not the real deal. Sadly, incidences like this do occur with diamond imitations, like moissanite and cubic zirconia, falsely advertised as diamonds. Because of this, we want to make sure you know how to avoid accidentally purchasing fake diamonds. So how do you prevent getting duped when purchasing a diamond? Know how to spot fake diamonds!
How can I tell if my diamond is real?
First things first, the most reliable way to assess the authenticity of your diamond is to have it evaluated by a trained gemologist or gemological laboratory, like the Gemological Institute of America. Once your diamond has a credible grading report, like a GIA Diamond Grading Report, there is no questioning its authenticity. But be sure your diamond report is not an in-house jeweler’s certificate; it must come from a respected gemological institute in order to assuage any doubts. The report will clearly state the diamond’s quality according to the 4Cs and disclose any treatments the diamond has undergone.
This may look like a diamond, but it’s actually cubic zirconia. Notice how flawless and clean it is.
You’re probably thinking:
“My diamond doesn’t have a credible grading report, so it must not be real.” The good news is that’s not always true.
If you are suspicious of diamonds you currently own there are a few ways to test a diamond at home. While these tests can help differentiate fake diamonds from real ones, it’s important to note they won’t always yield 100% accurate results. That’s why we recommend having your diamonds tested by a certified Graduate Gemologist. If you do feel like doing some investigating at home, let’s take a look at some tests that you can try out.
Diamond Test #1 – Magnification Examination
Closely inspecting a diamond can give you some clues about its authenticity. However, you do need to have some familiarity with the structure of authentic diamonds. The best way to magnify a diamond is by using a 10X jeweler’s loupe. This will allow you to enhance your view of the diamond to see its structure and facets. While you might not have a jeweler’s loupe on hand, you can use a magnifying glass or even your cell phone or camera to take a close-up photo. Then, zoom into the diamond as close as possible.
Diamonds are the result of extreme pressure so, naturally, they’re not perfect. Even the most beautiful of natural diamonds will have slight inclusions and/or blemishes. Fake diamonds, like cubic zirconia and moissanite, will look almost too perfect. These imitation diamonds are usually flawless and will look much different from a natural diamond when viewed under high magnification. Keep in mind- bubbles and inclusions are not the same thing. If you see bubbles in the gemstone, it’s not a real diamond.
Although it’s ideal to examine a loose diamond, an expert jeweler can examine your mounted diamond in an engagement ring or in diamond jewelry as well. The expert jewelers at Leo Hamel’s can positively identify whether your diamond is fake or not.
#2 – UV Light Test for Diamonds
Fake diamonds do not exhibit the same fluorescence as real diamonds. What exactly does this mean? Diamond fluorescence is visible light emitted from a diamond when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, often blue in color. Natural diamonds should glow blue under UV light with a grading scale from least to most fluorescent. If you have a UV light you can certainly perform this test at home. If not, stop by your local jeweler; jewelry stores are always equipped with UV lights. This will allow you to test your diamond’s fluorescence and compare it to other real diamonds. And you can always ask your jeweler for assistance and advice.
Courtesy of GIA©
#3 – Fog Test Your Diamond
The fog test, also referred to as the breath test, is not the most reliable diamond test, but it’s still useful. A rather simple method, the fog test involves blowing on the stone to create a film of moisture on the surface. Real diamonds do not retain heat. Therefore, if you blow hot air on it the fog on a real diamond will disappear immediately. On the other hand, diamond imitations, like a moissanite engagement ring, will fog over and stay fogged up for much longer. Just like a bathroom mirror after a hot shower, the fog will eventually fade away. But this is a helpful clue as to whether or not you have real or fake diamonds. Repeatedly blowing on a fake diamond with hot breath will build up more and more fog, whereas the real diamond’s fog will clear off almost instantly.
#4 – Drop the Diamond into Water to Test It
This test only works for loose diamonds. Take a glass of water and drop your loose diamond in. Loose diamonds are very dense so it should sink straight to the bottom. If it’s a fake diamond, it will float or sink to the bottom very slowly. However, some cubic zirconias and moissanites are fairly heavy, so they can possibly deceive this test. Don’t rely solely on the water test; perform other at-home diamond tests as well for better accuracy.
#5 – Testing the Transparency of Your Diamond
The most popular DIY method of testing whether your diamond is real or not is testing its transparency. This is another test that should be performed on loose diamonds. Natural diamonds refract light so brilliantly you should not be able to see through them. A cubic zirconia doesn’t refract light the same way a diamond does, so it doesn’t sparkle as much. To perform this test, place a loose diamond face-down on top of a piece of newspaper or other item with text written on it. Then, simply peer through the diamond. If you have a fake diamond, you will be able to see the text through it. But the facets of a real diamond will break up the image so that it can’t be seen.
#6 – Heat Testing (Have Caution with this At-Home Diamond Test)
Caution: fake diamonds will most likely crack or shatter when using the heat test.
This test is the most dangerous since there is the potential of ruining your stone if it’s not a real diamond. If you’re not particularly fond of the stone in question, have at it. First, you will need to heat up the stone for approximately 30 seconds. Use a lighter or other source of direct flame. Then, immediately drop the stone into a cold glass of water. It’s imperative the water is cold, not room temperature or warm. Extreme temperature changes like this have no effect on a real diamond. However, fake diamonds will more than likely crack or shatter. But be aware that if your genuine diamond has been treated to enhance its appearance, heating it can cause its appearance to be altered. It’s best to avoid this method altogether if you fear damaging the stone in question.
#7 – Conductivity Test
This test is not one that can be easily performed at home, so you will most likely need the assistance of your local jeweler. A little-known fact is that diamonds are great electrical conductors. This test is extremely useful when testing real diamonds compared to moissanite pretenders, as these particular impostors can be highly resistant to other testing methods. Therefore, testing the conductivity is a useful method for distinguishing diamonds from moissanite. Real diamonds will conduct electricity with much greater strength than moissanite.
Does the scratch test really work?
You’re probably aware that diamonds are the hardest minerals on Earth. Ranking 10 out of 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, no other gemstone is as durable as a diamond. The theory behind this test is that since diamonds are so durable they should be able to scratch a glass mirror. Diamonds rank 10 while glass ranks 5.5, so this makes sense. But when you think about it, this test isn’t entirely foolproof. Yes, a real diamond will scratch a mirror; however, there are other durable gemstones that will too! For instance, quartz, moissanite, and cubic zirconia all rank around 7 or 8 so these gemstones will scratch glass, too. This method was proven outdated and inaccurate since other durable gemstones will past this test. If you solely rely on the scratch test, you might still be in possession of a fake diamond. We’d recommend trying the other tests mentioned above for better accuracy, and to prevent any damage to your gemstone.
Still not sure if you have real or fake diamonds?
When considering purchasing diamonds from a private party, you are bound to run into scammers looking to make easy money. Even if you try to learn how to recognize real diamonds from fake ones, you could be fooled, leading to a lot of financial trouble and emotional distress. Imitation diamonds are becoming more and more difficult to detect through most home-based tests, which is why it’s important to purchase diamonds from a reputable and trustworthy jeweler.
If you’ve tried all of the above at home diamond tests, but are still not sure if you have a real diamond, stop by Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers. Our expert gemologists will quickly be able to evaluate your diamond and determine its authenticity. We’re also more than happy to explain and show you the differences between real and fake diamonds. Per your request, we can also have your diamond shipped to the GIA for testing. If your diamond is real, you’ll always have the certificate to prove it.

Tips to Identify Fake Designer Bags
So, you’ve got a bit of cash burning a hole in your pocket, and you’re ready to splurge on a trendy designer handbag. You can choose to shop at a department store, but sky-high prices may lead you to settle for something that you’re not absolutely in love with. To score a bargain, you may decide to shop secondhand, either in a store or online. While this is certainly an excellent option, there is a greater risk for shoppers to be scammed. Fake designer bags are everywhere, and nowadays they can look nearly identical to the real thing. And although stores like Leo Hamel Boutique & Consignment Shop thoroughly inspect and authenticate their items before they’re sold, the same cannot be said for all sellers, especially those online.
Fortunately, designers have caught on to this phenomenon and have taken steps to counteract the counterfeiters. Most designer handbags feature several tiny trademarks that indicate whether the bag is genuine or fake. Each designer is different when it comes to the details they add to their handbags as a measure of authenticity. Some have opted for serial numbers, while others have chosen to be more tactful. For example, Prada is known to only use a specific brand of zippers for its bags, a fact that the everyday consumer may not know.
If you’re interested in purchasing a designer handbag, but want to be sure you’re getting the real deal, we’re here to steer you in the right direction! In this article, we’ll detail how to identify knockoff handbags trying to pass as your favorite designer brands.
Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton is one of the most replicated luxury brands in the world. Known for their signature LV monogram, the brand’s best-sellers include the popular Neverfull tote, and the charming Speedy bag, among others. Louis Vuitton has been crafting elegant handbags that exceed expectations of quality for more than a century, becoming the envy of men and women alike. Such strong demand has given way to a flourishing second hand market that can be tricky to navigate. Although Louis Vuitton includes date codes stamped on the inside of their bags, this is not a guarantee of authenticity as one may assume.
A true Louis Vuitton handbag will have flawless stitching that is precise—an Alma, Speedy, or Neverfull bag will have exactly five stitches securing the bag’s leather straps. Also be sure to take note of the leather straps. Louis Vuitton exclusively uses vachetta leather to design their handbag straps, a material that is untreated and therefore will deepen in color with time and wear. A pre-owned Louis Vuitton handbag should have straps that show evidence of this natural patina. If the leather looks suspiciously light and clean, you may want to check for other indicators of the bag’s authenticity.
Before you take the plunge and purchase a bag secondhand, do your homework to confirm it’s a style that Louis Vuitton does in fact produce. Counterfeiters are known to sell handbags with the LV logo, but that are not actually modeled after a real Louis Vuitton design. Though this may seem like a no brainer, it’s often where shoppers get easily caught up.
Some Louis Vuitton styles are made from one continuous piece of leather, such as the Speedy, Keepall, and Papillon bags. This is why you may have noticed the LV logo is upside down on certain handbags. If you spot any seams along the bottom of the bag, you might want to think twice before you buy.
Chanel
There are few people who don’t instantly recognize Chanel’s trademark logo. The iconic brand is known for their handbags, particularly their popular quilted flap bags. Like Louis Vuitton, the market for counterfeit Chanel handbags is a thriving one, fueled by consumer desire and demand for these luxury leather goods. If you’re in the market for a pre-loved Chanel bag, there are some tricks to determining a bag’s authenticity before you buy.
One telltale sign of a true Chanel handbag is the quality of the leather. Chanel creates the majority of its bags with lambskin, which is noticeably smooth and supple. If the bag doesn’t feel buttery soft beneath your fingertips, it may in fact be an impostor. In addition to the leather, get a good look at the bag’s stitching. Chanel’s signature quilted pattern features eleven stitches along the edge of each panel, whereas a replica will have fewer stitches. Another giveaway of a fake Chanel bag is the interlocking C logo. Counterfeiters often stumble over this small detail, but the right C should overlap the left C at the top, and vice versa at the bottom.
While Chanel does issue authenticity cards with all of its handbags, these are not always available when you purchase second hand. And while these cards certainly help with the authentication process, they’re not any sort of guarantee. As a general guide, bags made between 1984 and 1986 will have a 6-digit code printed on the card, bags made between 1986 and 2004 will have 7 digits, and those from 2005 and on include 8 digits. Check that the number on the authenticity card matches what’s printed inside the bag.
When inspecting the details of a Chanel bag, look for indicators of the bag’s overall quality. Chanel only produces the best, so take note of things like the bag’s inner lining, which should be snug with no loose fabric or bumps. The bag should maintain its structure and quality, and should show few to no signs of wear, even after many uses.
Hermès
The Hermès Birkin and Kelly bags are some of the most exclusive in the world. These luxurious leather handbags often sell for six figures or more, making them highly attractive to collectors. Hermès handbags are ideal for counterfeiters to replicate, since the real thing can be difficult for the average shopper to get their hands on. When judging whether a Hermès bag is genuine or not, keep an eye out for a few telltale signs.
The most obvious indication will always be the price. An authentic Kelly or Birkin will not be cheap, even when purchased second hand. Consider that the resale value of these handbags is rumored to be around 16%, so they’re likely to sell for more rather than less.
One of the most beloved characteristics of a Birkin bag is its structured design. When sitting upright, the bag should hold its shape with no slouching or puckering. Keep in mind that all Birkin and Kelly bags are made by hand, not with a machine, so the level of quality should reflect this.
Hermès uses a variety of materials to craft their handbags, though Togo leather is most popular for Birkin and Kelly bags. The bag should feel soft and should have a noticeably rich aroma. Examine how the brand’s label is stamped into the leather. Letters that look as though they’re printed on top of the leather suggest the bag is a knockoff. The flap beneath the bag’s lock will also have a blind stamp placed there by the Hermès artisan who designed it. A blind stamp should be faintly visible, but not pressed too deeply into the leather.
Prada
Prada is a name that’s synonymous with lavish, couture fashion, and their handbags are no exception. What makes a Prada bag so desirable is more than just its style and quality. Authentic Prada handbags are a flawless blend of unique shapes, vibrant colors, and bold metal hardware. It’s no wonder Prada is one of the most sought-after designer brands out there. If you’re ready to shop for a pre-owned Prada handbag, save yourself from being swindled by taking note of some key things.
For starters, get a good look at the bag’s logo. The “R” in Prada should have a distinct dip or curve on the letter’s right leg. If this detail is missing, you definitely have a knockoff. Furthermore, check that the lettering is evenly spaced and that all fonts and colors match. The plaque’s background color will always match that of the rest of the bag, so steer clear of those that do not. Also check for an interior logo, made from either ceramic or leather, depending on the style of bag. A true Prada bag will not have plastic or fabric logos.
As we mentioned earlier, Prada exclusively uses Lampo, Ykk, Riri, Opti, and Ipi brand zippers, which are of the utmost quality. Check that the hardware opens and closes with ease. If you’re having to wrestle with a Prada bag’s zipper, it’s probably not genuine.
Just like any authentic designer handbag, Prada exceeds normal expectations of quality and craftsmanship. The bag’s stitching will be precise, the leather will feel velvety soft, and the lining will be perfectly printed. Absolutely no imperfection will have gone unnoticed, so if you spot something that seems out of the ordinary, definitely think twice before you buy.
Gucci
Gucci is one of the best-selling Italian luxury brands; their high-end designer goods are some of the finest in the world. Creative director Alessandro Michele was brought on board in 2015 and has since taken the brand to new heights. Gucci’s whimsical designs are particularly appealing to consumers under the age of 30 who find their bright colors, mesmerizing patterns, and unusual textures to be especially Instagram-able. Unfortunately, young adults are easier for frauds to fool than a seasoned collector. Before buying a pre-owned Gucci handbag, you can confirm its authenticity in just a few simple steps.
When inspecting a bag made from canvas, check that the double G logo is properly oriented. The left G should be facing forward, while the right G faces backwards. Each pair of G’s is connected with two tiny printed dots. The lettering should be slim and the curves of the G’s should be perfectly rounded. Take note of where the bag’s seams meet, the pattern should be consistent and line up perfectly. Gucci also uses a type of canvas with a slight sheen to it. If the bag’s material is dull and flat, it’s definitely not genuine.
The brand does issue serial numbers for each of its bags, which can be located on the back of the inner label. Each tiny number is hand stamped closely together, so if you notice the numbers look inadequately spaced, this may be a red flag. In addition to serial numbers, Gucci also issues what are known as Controllato cards. These cards tell a seller that the bag was inspected and passed Gucci’s standards of quality. Of course, just like an authenticity card, Controllato cards are often misplaced and not available to someone buying second hand. In these cases, don’t be too quick to dismiss the bag as a fake.

Choosing an Engagement Ring: 10 Questions You Should Always Ask
Selecting the perfect engagement ring for your sweetheart can seem pretty overwhelming. There are countless choices to be made and details to be hammered out. Aside from deciding upon matters of style and design, there are other factors to consider, like whether or not the ring you choose will need to be special ordered. Don’t let the pressure of picking a beautiful ring cause you to forget about these important particulars! Before making this paramount purchase, you want to be certain that you’ve asked all the right questions. Unsure what those questions might be? No problem! We’ve compiled a list of 10 crucial questions to ask when choosing an engagement ring that will help make your trip to the jeweler that much easier.
1. What’s Your Budget?
Budget is undoubtedly the most important thing to consider when choosing an engagement ring. A budget will act as your road map while shopping, helping narrow your options to what you can afford. If you’re stuck contemplating what you should spend, keep in mind that an engagement ring is something she will wear long into the future, and may even pass down to your children. It’s definitely an item worth investing in. That being said, it’s important to talk to your spouse about what they like, what they’re expecting, and what you’d realistically like to fork over for an engagement ring. Perhaps the two of you decide you’d rather save your money for a house or an unforgettable honeymoon. It’s really a personal decision that you and your significant other must make together. Let your jeweler know upfront what your budget is and how flexible you’re willing to be. That way, they don’t waste your time showing you rings you can’t afford.
2. What are Your Payment Options?
Seeing as an engagement ring is a pretty pricey purchase, many jewelers offer various payment options so you’re not stuck paying one massive sum up front. Though most men plan and save ahead of time for this kind of expense, unexpected costs can arise that he may not have prepared for. In these cases, it comes in handy to have a backup plan. Talk to your jeweler about what payment options you have. Some offer layaway programs with a down payment, as well as lines of credit that are interest free for a certain introductory period. Depending on the cost of the ring, monthly payments tend to be low and fairly easy to manage for most. Even if you have a good chunk of money to spend, you can use that towards a down payment on the ring and pay off the remaining balance over time.
3. Will the Ring Need to Be Special Ordered?
It’s important to do your ring shopping well before you plan to propose. Don’t assume that the ring you choose will be available same day. Jewelers often carry a wide variety of engagement ring styles, but only in a few select sizes. That means that the ring you decide on may have to be special ordered. If this is the case, you want to make sure you have ample time for it be ordered and for modifications to be made before you receive the final product. This can take weeks, sometimes even months, so be sure to think ahead and plan your proposal accordingly.
4. Can the Ring You’ve Chosen Be Resized?
Customers tend to assume that all rings can be resized, though this is unfortunately not the case. The more detailed a ring is, the more difficult it will likely be to resize. Rings with engravings, milgrain, or eternity stones are the trickiest to modify. In fact, many jewelers won’t even try for fear of damaging the ring. This is important to remember when shopping, especially if you’re just guessing her ring size. You’d hate to purchase a pricey ring that’s too big only to discover that it can’t be resized.
5. What Kind of Care Will the Ring Require?
Engagement rings are a gorgeous, glittering accessory, but they don’t stay that way on their own. They must be properly cleaned and cared for to maintain their beauty and luster. White gold, for example, will occasionally need to be re-plated with rhodium to keep it looking bright and radiant. On the other hand, a platinum ring will develop a natural patina over time that causes it to look darker and less lustrous. Those who prefer a glossier look will need to have their ring buffed and polished to maintain its gleam. If your bride-to-be has always wanted a gemstone engagement ring, you’ll want to first make sure that the gemstone you choose is durable enough for everyday wear. Sapphires and rubies are nearly as hard as diamonds, making them ideal for an engagement ring. Other gemstones, like emerald and opal, are softer and more susceptible to chipping and scratching and are therefore less practical for an engagement ring.
6. Do They Have an In-House Jeweler?
Nothing is better than having all of your needs met in one convenient place, which is why we recommend shopping somewhere that has an in-house jeweler available for quick repairs. It’ll save you the time and hassle of finding someone you trust to get the job done right. And since you’ve purchased the ring from the store, they’ll likely cover certain adjustments and repairs under warranty.
7. Can They Provide a Certification?
We can’t stress this enough—do not buy a diamond that is not graded and certified by an independent gem lab, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). If a jeweler does not offer certifications for its diamonds, you may want to reconsider shopping with them. A diamond certification contains all of the details about a diamond including the cut, carat weight, color, and clarity, as well as any other characteristics that define that particular stone. Without a diamond certification from an independent lab, you simply have to trust that what the jeweler tells you about the diamond is true.
8. What is the Return/Exchange Policy?
Every man’s worst nightmare is pulling off a proposal, only for her to be disappointed in the ring. It’s an unfortunate situation, but it does happen. Luckily, many jewelry stores offer returns or exchanges for exactly these instances. Before finalizing any purchase, make sure to ask your jeweler to thoroughly explain their return and exchange policy so there are no surprises if you try to bring it back.
9. Does the Ring Come with a Warranty?
No matter how sturdy a ring is, natural wear and tear is inevitable. There’s always a chance you might lose a small diamond or spot a loose prong. It’s best not to ignore these minor imperfections, as they can lead to further damage. If you happen to be covered by your jeweler’s store warranty, these routine repairs should be easy, and cost-free.
10. Do They Suggest a Jewelry Insurer?
Depending on the price of the engagement ring, it might be worth investing in ring insurance. Engagement ring insurance can protect your treasure in the event of damage, theft, loss, and even unexplained disappearance. The annual premium for these plans is usually around 1-2% of your ring’s value. That means if the ring was $5,000, your annual cost would be about $50. Considering both the monetary and sentimental value of an engagement ring, this seems like a pretty reasonable price to pay each year to protect it. Jewelers can often point you in the direction of a reputable insurance company, and coverage is even offered through many renters and homeowners insurance plans.

5 Things You Should Know About the History of Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton is easily one of the most recognized luxury brands in the world, known for their trademark monogrammed handbags and luggage. Since its founding in 1854, the brand has skyrocketed to success and in 2017, it was estimated to be worth an astonishing $29 billion dollars. So, you may ask, what makes Louis Vuitton so special? Aside from a long list of legendary clientele like Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, and plenty of others, the brand’s products are unrivaled in style and quality. Want to know more about this renowned luxury brand? Here are 5 fascinating things you should know about the history of Louis Vuitton, the origins of its signature monogram, and the old-world craftsmanship that is paramount to the brand’s image.
Humble Origins
Louis Vuitton left his home when he was only 13 years old, embarking on a two-year journey to Paris where he became a box making and packing apprentice. He worked alongside the most renowned malletier in France, learning the trade from the best. After his apprenticeship, Vuitton ventured out to set up shop on his own. The first travel trunk that Vuitton designed was named the Trianon Trunk. It was the first of its kind to have a flat top and bottom which made them easy to stack and transport. These travel trunks were revolutionary, and their popularity spurred such demand that Vuitton had to expand to a larger workshop just outside of Paris. One of Vuitton’s most loyal clients was Empress Eugenie of France, wife to Napoleon III. She shared her affinity for Louis Vuitton with everyone she met, spreading the word among the Parisian elite. Word eventually made its way throughout Europe, and Vuitton’s client list grew to include more famous faces like J.P. Morgan and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
The Famous Monogram
In response to the popularity of Louis Vuitton’s travel trunks, other companies began producing cheap replicas. This prompted Vuitton to create the beloved two-toned, checkered design that is still used today. After Vuitton passed away, his son Georges further sought to solve this problem by introducing an interlocking “L” and “V” pattern that would later become the brand’s hallmark. It was Georges who also patented the tumbler lock with a numbered key, deemed to be theft proof. He felt so confident in the lock’s effectiveness, he went as far as to publicly challenge Harry Houdini to escape from a Louis Vuitton trunk. Georges worked to develop the brand overseas, arranging an exhibition at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. His attempts were successful, and shortly after Louis Vuitton products were sold at one of America’s first department stores, Wanamakers.
From Travel Bags to Handbags
After bringing his business stateside, Georges Vuitton expanded his collections to include travel bags of different shapes and sizes. Many of the brand’s signature handbags were originally created as custom designs for famous clientele. A custom order from Coco Chanel resulted in the creation of the beloved Alma bag, while the Speedy bag was born from a request made by Audrey Hepburn. Vuitton is also credited with designing the first bucket bag, a uniquely shaped sack designed for carrying several bottles of champagne at once.
The Rise of a Luxury Fashion Empire
In the late 1980’s, the brand merged with Moët et Chandon and Hennessy to form a luxury goods conglomerate known as LVMH. They soon recruited a young rising designer, Marc Jacobs, to be their new artistic director. During his tenure, Jacobs helped breathe new life into the company, creating the brand’s first ready-to-wear clothing lines for both men and women. A series of fresh, contemporary collections and groundbreaking collaborations set a new course for the brand that would lead to even greater success.
It’s All in the Bag
Though the brand now carries everything from jewelry to fragrances and even home décor, they’ll always be best known for their luggage and handbags. There are few brands that can compete with the exceptional quality and style of an authentic Louis Vuitton handbag. Each bag is meticulously crafted by hand, a process that can take up to a week. They’re designed to be waterproof, and are even rumored to be fireproof, though we don’t recommend testing this theory at home. You’ll never see a Louis Vuitton handbag on sale, as they refuse to mark down their products. In fact, leftover handbags that have not sold are said to be shipped back to the Louis Vuitton factory and destroyed in order to maintain the brand’s image of exclusivity.

Diamond Diving
Diamond mining is a multi-billion dollar industry, with countries like Australia and South Africa being key producers. The world’s diamond supply seems endless, but eventually these precious gems will become much scarcer. Some even predict major diamond mines to be depleted within the next 20-50 years, which is why mining companies like DeBeers are turning to alternative sources for retrieving diamonds, in order to maintain a robust reserve. These alternatives include scouring the deep seas for diamonds that have come to rest on the ocean floor.
Believe it or not, some experts say there could be as much as 1.5 billion carats of diamonds waiting to be discovered off the coast of South Africa. DeBeers has invested a great deal of money in machinery that can extract the diamonds safely and efficiently. They use what is essentially a large vacuum to gather several stones at a time. The diamond deposits located off the coast of Namibia are home to some of the highest quality gemstones in the world, making this a particularly desirable area for mining.
Diving for Diamonds
This practice will become increasingly commonplace as the diamond mining industry slowly transitions from traditional methods to more advanced ones. In addition to growing the mining industry, these new techniques are also effecting change in tourism trends. Diamond safaris are a luxe attraction for tourists visiting the southern coast of Africa. Yes, you read that correctly. Diamond diving, also known as diamond safaris, allow visitors the once in a lifetime chance to mine their very own diamond from the sediment of the seabed.
As if that weren’t cool enough, these excursions include a limousine ride, a private flight, breakfast and lunch accommodations at a luxurious coastal villa, and as much South African wine as you can consume. Visitors are accompanied by master divers who will assist you in excavating your rough diamond from the depths of the ocean and returning it to the surface. You’re guaranteed to find one of these precious gems, and if you’re lucky, you may even uncover a garnet or olivine.
Once your diamonds have been unearthed, you’ll choose which to have cut and polished. Then, as you enjoy the rest of your vacation, your rough diamond is transformed into a dazzling, lustrous gem. You’ll return home from your holiday with incredible memories and a souvenir unlike any other. In addition to being a unique, once in a lifetime experience, these diamonds are 100% conflict-free, meaning you don’t have to be uncertain about its origins or whether it was ethically sourced.
If you’re planning a trip to Africa, and are ready to splurge on an out of the ordinary experience, consider a diamond safari. If predictions are true, and the availability of diamonds does in fact decline, this opportunity may not be around for long!
Shop for Diamonds Close to Home

The Tiffany Yellow Diamond: The Most Expensive Jewel Ever Worn to the Oscars
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, by now you’ve probably seen the massive Tiffany yellow diamond that Lady Gaga wore this past weekend at the 2019 Academy Awards. Besides it’s tremendous size and sparkle, this diamond has a vibrant history dating back to its discovery in 1877. The diamond was last worn by Audrey Hepburn in 1961 during a promotional photo shoot for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and has spent the interim displayed on the Main Floor of Tiffany & Co.’s flagship Fifth Avenue store. For those who tuned in to the Academy Awards, it was impossible not to notice the beautiful, grand diamond around Gaga’s neck, and the buzz it instantly generated. With so much talk and interest in the spectacular Tiffany yellow diamond, we thought it would be fitting to take a closer look at how it came to be the legendary jewel that it is today.
History of the Tiffany Diamond
The Tiffany yellow diamond was originally discovered in South Africa in 1877, and weighed an astonishing 287.42 carats in its rough form. Just one year later, Charles Lewis Tiffany secured the diamond for a mere $18,000, far less than its current estimated worth of $30 million. The stone traveled back to Paris where Tiffany & Co.’s renowned gemologist, Dr. George Frederick Kunz, oversaw the cutting of the diamond into a radiant, cushion-shaped gem with some impressive specs. The cut and polished finished product weighs in at 128.54 carats and boasts 82 extraordinary facets that amplify its beauty and rich color. The Tiffany yellow diamond has become somewhat of an American treasure, and has traveled around the world for various exhibitions and showcases. Lady Gaga is one of only three women who’ve had the privilege of wearing this exquisite and elusive gemstone for a public event. The first was Mrs. Mary Whitehouse, the wife of an American diplomat, who wore the jewel to the 1957 Tiffany Ball in Rhode Island. Just four years later, the diamond was set in Jean Schlumberger’s Ribbon Rosette necklace, and worn by Hollywood starlet Audrey Hepburn while promoting her film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Is the Tiffany Yellow Diamond for Sale?
Though the Tiffany yellow diamond is not presently for sale, and likely never will be, this wasn’t always the case. In 1972, Tiffany & Co. placed an ad in the New York Times, offering the diamond for sale for $5 million, the equivalent of nearly $26 million in today’s dollars. The catch? The diamond would only be available for 24 hours, so anyone interested had to act fast. As you might imagine, there were no serious buyers, and the diamond became a permanent part of the brand’s jewelry archives.
The 175th Anniversary Tiffany Diamond Necklace
In 2012, Tiffany & Co. celebrated 175 years as a leader in fine jewelry. To mark the occasion, the Tiffany yellow diamond was reset in a breathtaking necklace with over 100 carats of glittering white diamonds. This same necklace was fitted for Lady Gaga to wear to the 2019 Oscars, where she channeled her inner Audrey in an elegant, black Alexander McQueen gown and glamorous gloves. She tied the look together with white and yellow diamond drop earrings that perfectly matched her necklace.
