apropos nothing, my headcanon is that at first gaara crushes on naruto, but good ol naruto only has sasuke on his mind and doesnt even know hes in love, and gaara is comfortable, if resentful towards sasuke for hurting naruto, and after years, lee pops up in suna for a long mission or something and gaara slowly falls in love with lee and finally gets over naruto. 

idk i feel its essential that he crushes on naruto at first due to their literal inner demon and loneliness bonding. and just crushing on someone from afar can help you grow as a person. 

of course, lee doesnt notice at first either but he feels the strong urge to ‘strengthen their youthful bond of friendship’ every time gaara gives him a barely-there-smile.
