kaliβs smirk deepened as she watched boreum stumble over her words, clearly flustered. keeping her cool, she flicked the dice one last time, catching it effortlessly before slipping it into her pocket. βreflexes, huh? they come with the territory,β she said, her tone lazy and detached. overthinking wasnβt her styleβimpulse was her lifeblood, the thing that kept her alive, and it had served her well so far.
when they reached the third floor, kali stepped into boreumβs apartment without hesitation, her eyes sweeping over the space. it was clean, neat, everything in its place. not her kind of setup, but she wasnβt one to judge. instead, she flopped onto the couch, draping an arm casually over the back, completely relaxed. "nice place," she commented offhandedly, her gaze already wandering. βdonβt worry about the scratch. itβs nothing. seriously.β
she stretched her arm slightly to keep it from stiffening, her voice casual. βiβve got enhanced condition. this kind of thing barely slows me down. i donβt have accelerated healing or anything, but i heal faster than normal. hit harder too. iβm agile, strongβ¦ i could probably lift you.β she gave a small shrug as if it was no big deal. but then, her curiosity sparked, and her eyes sharpened on boreum. βso, what about you?β she asked, more directly now. βgot any abilities of your own, or are you just good at patching people up?β there was a playful lilt to her tone, but beneath it, she genuinely wanted to know what boreum might be hiding.
βkali park. but you can call me kali,β she offered when boreum finally introduced herself, her voice still nonchalant. βformalities arenβt really my thing, so donβt stress.β her lips curled into a small, almost reassuring smile, though her sharp features kept her looking intimidating. βbut yeah, thanks for the help, i guess.β
"you seem careful." she said out loud and clearly, "not a bad thing but people who play it safe have a reason for hiding or protecting something... important to them." her voice shifted to a more serious tone as she studied the other girl's expressions. "what's the story of boreum? something tells me you're not just some regular girl handing out bandages here." she raised her bandaged arm, pointing at it with her other hand.
the crease between her brows begins to smooth, and the edges of her mouth begin to curve upwards as the other girl accepts boreum's invitation to come upstairs to get a bandage. she finds herself breathing a small sigh of relief, tension easing out of her shoulders as she releases her bottom lip from between her teeth. boreum turns to guide them back up to the third floor, the corners of her eyes crinkle with happiness, and she nods slightly, taking extra care as the two of them head up the stairs - the last thing she would want to do was have another near-accident right as she had promised that she would be attentive to her surroundings.
she keeps conversation at a minimum as the two of them scale the stairs, offering up her apologies again before she turns and takes notice of kali tossing her dice up into the air. it's nothing profligate, but boreum's orbs widen in amazement. surely, if she tried to catch anything in mid-air .. well, she'd probably end up toppling down the stairs again. "w-wow.. you have great reflexes," she says genuinely, turning away as they reach the third floor, taking a moment or two to fish around for her keys from inside her purse.
" .. c-come on in," she says as they reach their journey's end, gently pushing the door to her apartment open after unlocking it. the entire trek took less than a few minutes - though it was probably a little longer given boreum was overanalyzing every crack in the stairwell. instinctively, she goes to hang up her bag and coat on the hooks nearby after gesturing to the other to take a seat on the couch some feet away. "please.. er, m-make yourself at home.. i'll go grab the first aid kit.."
boreum returns a few moments later, having grabbed the supplies from the shelf nearby. she has a plethora of different sized plasters in one hand, while the other holds a cotton swab and some peroxide. she offers the other female a nervous smile, feeling a little embarrassed for some reason. perhaps because she's only used to dressing her own scratches, and not someone else. " .. c-can you stretch out your arm.. uhm.." a pause, as she realizes she's invited a stranger inside without even learning their name. she flushes, humiliation crashing over her and setting her face aflame. "i-i'm sorry.. i didn't introduce.. er, myself.. i-i'm boreum, and .. y-you are?"

kali noticed the other girl's shoulders all hunched, seemingly shy and guilty. she looked like the kind of person to stay away from trouble but kali's usual sharpness dulled and she felt a pang of something unfamiliar, almost protective-like. she doesn't show it outwardly though, instead, she leans into her usual teasing, masking her care behind a smirk, but deep down, she knows she's already softening toward boreum quite a bit. she flexes her hand, glancing at the scratch on her arm before waving it off again, "it's really nothing." she persisted, her voice dismissive but there's grin playing on her lips.
"seriously, i've had worse in training," she noted, her tone lighter but with the way boreum kept pleading, makes kali's defenses crack just a little. her hardened, no-nonsense demeanor softened, just for a moment and she let out a sigh. "alright, alright," she relented, rolling her eyes but stepping forward slightly. "if it'll make you feel better, fine."
"lead the way..." kali's boots clacked against the floor with each step, she normally wouldn't have given a second thought to someone like boreum, someone who seemed so fragile, so easily rattled and swayed. yet, she was following her upstairs for a bandage that she didn't even need. it seemed unnecessary... at least, that's what she thought.
her fingers absentmindedly fished a pair of dice from her pocket, a habit she'd picked up long ago. she rolled them between her fingers, the smooth edges clicking softly against each other with a flick of her thumb. it was a game she played by herself, testing her luck without ever really caring about the outcome. she tossed them once , catching them in midair, a grin on her lips as they landed in her hand again.
what was wrong with her? this wasn't the kind of thing she cared about. she gritted her teeth, trying to share off the unfamiliar feeling clawing at her chest. this wasn't her... she was supposed to be untouchable, a fighter, not someone who went soft over a clumsy apology. kali felt herself softening in ways she couldn't explain.
boreum follows her line of sight as the words of warning pierce the space between them - chocolate orbs trailing down from the other's face to the scrape marring her arm, widening when they take in the sight of it's reddening. she sucks in a breath, guilt crashing over her like a wave despite the nonchalant attitude the other presented. though the scratch is nothing severe, it's the fact that she's caused it that makes boreum's skin prickle with trepidation. she takes a step forward with a culpable look painting her features, pulling her bottom lip between her teeth as the other flashes her a smug smile, insisting it's nothing that she can't handle.
"b-but.." boreum begins, brows knitting themselves together as her gaze flickers from the scratch to kali's face and back again. "i-i'm really sorry.. this is all my fault.." she trails off as the other mentions again that she really should be more mindful of where she's going and that she shouldn't make nearly plummeting down the stairs a habit. boreum's ears burn, and she nods vigorously. "i-it won't happen again.." so she says, but boreum has a difficult enough time not tripping over her own two feet standing still. "i'd hate to.. inconvenience you, er, more.. but c-can.. can i please get you a bandage?"
she swallows again, looking at kali with pleading eyes. the least she could do was offer her savior some thing to cover that scratch with - and maybe an alcohol wipe or two to clean it up. "p-please.. it'll only take a second.." boreum takes a step back and gestures up the stairs she had just come down from, slender index finger pointing to the floor above them. ".. on the third floor.. uhm, t-that's where my apartment is.. er, please let me get you a b-bandage." she doesn't divulge that there's a first aid kit sitting pretty on a shelf right next to her front door - though it wouldn't take clairvoyance to know she's clumsy and most times putting on a fresh plaster was the first thing she did when she'd come home from her outings.

she didn't know the girl. not really. just someone who had been caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. but that wasnβt anything new for kali park; sheβd spent a decent amount of time pulling strangers out of dangerous situations. her arms folded across her chest, her posture relaxed and cool. "you're fine," she assured, her voice detached and carefree. her lips curled into a small smirk, the kind that hinted at more than she let on. "those stairs are a deathtrap, but iβve seen worse." she leaned back against the railing, glancing between boreum and the cracked steps as if weighing the absurdity of it all. a soft chuckle escaped her lips. "you might wanna keep all your senses on alert next time." her voice was smooth but firm enough to carry weight.
kali didnβt even register the faint scrape on her arm from the railing, the red line forming against her skin barely worth noticing. pain was nothing to her; her body was built to endure far worse. where others might flinch, she simply glanced at the mark, uninterested, as if it were little more than an inconvenience. sheβd taken harder hits and blows before, but for kali, that was just part of her world. her muscles could absorb the strain, her bones withstand the impact, and her nerves seemed to shrug off pain altogether. a near fall? a scrape? nothing. sheβd come out unscathedβat least on the outside. "trust me, it takes more than this to slow me down," she said confidently, a touch of arrogance in her tone. "so, donβt worry about me."
"i can handle a little chaos," she added, her smirk growing as her arms dropped back to her sides. "but maybe try not to make it a habit, okay?" she dragged her boots, the sound of them hitting the concrete steady. "do you live around here, by the way?" she hated small talk, but considering that sheβd seen the girl more than a handful of times by now, it felt proper to ask.
misfortune followed boreum like a dark cloud - looming overhead, temperamental and brooding, always threatening to break open and unleash some kind of catastrophe, whether it be big or small. she had an undeniable talent for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, calamity always chasing at her heels. in her adolescence, she had been so ill-fated that she had thought that her true abilities weren't being able to generate forcefields or go unseen to those around her, but instead to cause some sort of mishap wherever she would go. as she had gotten older, the thought of such things had diminished, and she had come to terms with the fact that she just sometimes was unlucky, simply resigning herself to the idea that fortune simply didn't smile down upon her as often as it did with others. even with this mindset, however, it's curious if maybe her assumption had come about just because she had gotten used to being so graceless.
and today, like most days, there's no exception to boreum's blighted existence. though it seems like this time she's unknowingly involved someone else in her afflictions, feeling her body be pulled back the second her foot had touched the crumbling stairs. the whole scene happens so fast that it leaves her a little lightheaded, reeling at the fact that she had been saved before misfortune even had a chance to strike. she blinks, watching her savior separate themselves from her being, only for them to turn a moment later and forewarn her to be careful.
".. t-thank you! .. i-i'm so sorry," she stutters out, the tips of her ears beginning to burn as the other female mentions she should be watching her step on the deteriorating stairwell. it's not the first time someone has advised her to be mindful of where she's walking. "t-the stairs are really.. uh.. tricky.." a pause, embarrassed about her phrasing. ""i-i'll be more careful.." she says quickly afterwards, flushing a bright red as she nods her head, indicating she was taking the other woman's words seriously. "t-thank you again for.. er.. helping me." she glances down at the concreate, thinking of all the times she did find herself a scraped mess on the landing due to her tripping over her own two feet. "y-you're not hurt or anything.. a-are you..?" she swallows then, reaching up to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear, worried maybe she might have caused the other trouble when she'd been rescued.

kali park didn't have a care in the world for the smallest affairs like people's names, small talk, or whatever passed for social pleasantries in the crumbling mess that was urban residence apartments--the cracks in the walls, the flickering of dying lights and not to mention, the worn out, uneven stairs that were waiting to trip and rip someone apart. she had her own life and secrets, and that's how she flowed. but today, the universe had other plans for her, and it started with a sharp, instinctual pang that she got whenever things were about to go south.
it was an instinct she couldn't shake off. she didn't even have to try. one glance at the girl in front of her, losing her balance. being closer to hitting that one loose step. kali could practically see it in slow motion, the trip, the fall, and the bloody aftermath.
typical, people. always so clumsy-never watching where they're carefully going. but I really don't want to see anyone's skull get crushed today... from eating... sh*t.
kali thought, smirking to herself. with her cocky attitude, she could just walk on by. it wasn't her problem. but then again, where was the fun in that? without a second thought, she was already rushing. her boots hit the concrete steps with a heavy thud and just as the girl's foot hit the warped step, kali's hand shot out. "sorry, it's not like that but." she grabbed her by the arm, pulling her back from what would have been an embarrassing and painful tumble down the stairs.
"whoa there." she muttered, her voice dripping with hints of sarcasm. she didn't bother to check the girl's face, just glanced down at the strange situation and shrugged. "you should know that these stairs are practically a death trapβ¦" she continued, the emphasis of the warning, direct and strong. "you might want to watch your step next timeβ¦" she let go of the girl's arm quickly as she grabbed it. she called over her shoulder, rather concerned than amused. "be careful of bad luck catching up with you if you're not careful."
