Artist program book design for 'ศาลาสล่าขิ่น เปิดโลก จ. พรหมมินทร์'

ชนบทในประเทศไทยได้รับการถ่ายทอดผ่านเลนส์ของภาพถ่ายและฝีแปรงในงานจิตรกรรม โดยภาพถ่ายในช่วงเริ่มแรกจำนวนมากมายเหล่านี้ถูกบันทึกโดยนักเดินทางตะวันตกผู้กระหายที่จะบันทึกการเดินทางของพวกเขาผ่านทัศนียภาพที่ไม่เคยสำรวจมาก่อน มุมมองเหล่านี้เจาะลึกในการสำรวจทิวทัศน์ท้องถิ่นและได้รับการแปลงเป็นเป็นเครื่องมือวิทยาศาสตร์ทันสมัย เช่น ช่องมองภาพของกล้องถ่ายรูปและม้วนฟิล์ม สิ่งแรกที่ทำให้ตกตะลึงเมื่อได้เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับสล่าขิ่น ศิลปินท้องถิ่นผู้เรียนรู้ด้วยตนเองจากอำเภอพาน คือวิธีที่เขาใช้กล้องถ่ายรูปของเขาอย่างชำนาญในการจับภาพและแก่นแท้ของวิถีชีวิตท้องถิ่น ชุมชนชาติพันธุ์ และทัศนียภาพที่งดงามของจังหวัดเชียงราย จากนั้นเขาก็แปลงภาพถ่ายเหล่านี้ให้เป็นวัสดุทางศิลปะของเขา และสร้างภาพวาดที่สวยงาม ซึ่งแสดงออกอย่างชัดเจนถึงความงามของภูมิประเทศในภูมิภาคนี้ ขอเชิญทุกท่านมาร่วมสัมผัสประสบการณ์การเดินทางที่น่าตื่นเต้นและภาพวาดที่งดงามของสล่าขิ่น ณ ศาลาสล่าขิ่น ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของงานไทยแลนด์เบียนนาเล่ จังหวัดเชียงราย นิทรรศการจะแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 9 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2566 ถึง 9 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2567 เราหวังว่าจะได้แบ่งปันประสบการณ์ที่เปี่ยมไปด้วยคุณค่านี้กับทุกท่าน

A Poster design and Art Direction for ‘The Good Place Exhibition’
A Solo Exhibition By Kanrapee Chokpaiboon

The Good Place is my observation of Varanasi, one of India’s Holy cities. Varanasi “The holy land,” as they called it, is also known for another name, The Land of a Million Gods.’ It’s a city where the Ganges River flows through dividing the city into the ‘heaven’ side and the ‘hell’ side. According to the Hindu’s belief, the Ganges River is the place where heaven connects to the earth.

I first put myself as an observer and let myself flow along with the hymn of the city. As I walked through the city I felt captivated and it was love at first sight. After my 4th trip, I accumulated all the images and spent a couple of years developing a visual language to portray the essence of Varanasi. I form a connection between my work and the city through culture, religious beliefs, spirituality, and similar social constructs which are fundamentals of most of my work. My images exist at the border between reality and the dream realm which I created through the use of flash, to reveal how the supernatural seeps into the city and its people even in the age of technology.

Religious beliefs to the people of Varanasi are one of the most important pillars in life. They adhere to the long-entrenched Vedas which consist of 4 treatises. The Rig Veda - a chanting hymn for the gods, The Sāma Veda - dedicated chanting to the gods, The Yajur Veda - a description of the sacrifice rituals and The Atharva Veda - a collection of magical spells. This hasn’t changed much for the past 5,000 years. People still bathe in the Ganges River to purify their souls. To be closer to the hands of gods, people want to spend their very last moment in life in Varanasi. Also, the caste system is deep rooted here, stemming from Hinduism, and is still strictly abided by the people. I want to capture the city that seems to be frozen in time; different scenes, and moments through my own perspective. It’s my attempt to grasp the lessons of the Holy City from an outsider’s point of view.

We used to decipher colour more deeply: green with envy, pink with pleasure, red with shame. We are bruised black and blue.
.
Colour divides us even as it unites – into us and them; black and white, red and blue, red and yellow. Such artificially-induced divisions to conquer have left many people too mentally exhausted to maintain any degree of awareness or even to care about human survival, let alone art. It’s become easy to forget that colour in its pure vibrational form, unburdened by preconception and man-made context, is energy, with the power to heal and free us from obscure emotional conflict through a sort of pleasurable catharsis. Colour is instant drama, beyond words and shapes, beyond touch, colour saturates the brain and clarifies the heart.

The worldwide imprisonment of the pandemic lockdown gave photo-artist Manit Sriwanichpoom the quiet time he needed to complete the long-overdue compilation of his iconic Pink Man series, as well as two other books of previously unseen work of extraordinary intensity: the transcendental ‘I Saw A Blue Wing’ and the dark joy of ‘When I Was Twenty’.

A rare visual feast, ‘Pink, Black & Blue’ is an exhibition comprising works from all three collections.

Wing Shya The Photography Exhibition

Wing Shya is a Hong Kong-based artist who specializes in capturing the atmospheres and connections between couples, including their coexistence as well as their in-the-moment intimacy. When people look at his picture, there is always the perception that time has stopped since he has captured his deepest longings for love and attachment, isolation and loneliness. The world seemed to have slowed down, letting the audience impressively connect in that special moment.

Wing Shya’s work with behind-the-scenes photography by director Wong Kar-Wai is a medium that helps in our understanding of the perception of Hong Kong in a well-known movie frame. Aside from the film, there is another lovely aspect that is natural-looking, persistent, and emotional.
.
Wing Shya has featured in numerous global commercials and magazines in Europe, Asia and the Americas. He currently resides at a studio in Hong Kong.
