Learn to Read the Markings on Your Tyres

  Many of us operate a car or travel in one every day, but very few of us actually know how our cars work. Which is fine for the most part, that’s what we have mechanics for, right? Well sort of, and it is true that for many of the big things it is absolutely vital to take your car into a trained and licenced mechanic.

However, there are a few important things you should always learn to do yourself too. Reading the markings on your tyres is one of them. Tyres are the most important part of our cars to keep maintained as they are the parts that make contact with the road and can be a deciding factor between life or death in an accident.

In fact, weak tyres contribute to an estimated 11000 crashes and 200 deaths each year in Australia; these are all completely preventable by remembering to regularly examine your tyres and figuring out how to read them.

Decoding the Tyre Matrix

The only marks that are mandatory to be shown on the sidewall of a tyre in Australia are shown below:

·         Manufacturer’s brand name or logo

·         Tyre Size, Rim Size, Series Load and Speed Rating/Symbol

·         Serial Number and date of tyre build(Week/Month/Year)

·         Construction details such as if it is tubed or tubeless, radial, and size

·         What Country it was made in

·         Number to show mould

·         Number to show Factory code

How do I know which is which?

If you look at the sidewall of your tyre, you will see a number of codes and markings. We’ll use the example C205/65 R99 10 W to break down the different parts of the tyre.

·         The very first letter will be the type of vehicle it should be used on (C=Commercial, P=Passenger, LT=Light Truck), so C is telling us this is for a commercial vehicle.

·         Next is the section width in millimetres, 205 is referring to the tyre width. 65 then in this example becomes the sidewall height as a % of the section width. Larger numbers mean a less efficient but smoother ride while smaller ones mean more efficient performance but a less comfortable ride. In this case, our 65 is the sidewall height.

·         R, standing here for “Radial Construction” will be largely universal as 98% of today’s tyres are radial construction.

·         Moving along, 99 is the load capacity of the car; the 10 is the wheel rim diameter in inches.

·         Finally, the last letter will be a speed rating, indicating at which maximum speed the tyre can carry its load according to a prescribed load index.

There you have it; now you can read tyre!
