For Cello, you don't directly Push on the string because that creates unnecessary tension. You actually 'Pull' on the string towards your left thigh. I have found that this works on the Violin and Viola as well.

TempoMaker (Human Metronome) Technic
     Have a student stand up in front of the class and conduct, they are known as the Human Metronome. Have the other students play a scale (arpeggio) or a song (etude or caprice) and follow the beat.      The purpose of this technic is to solidify control with a metronome or a beat setting. ©KAT

The Relative String Vibration Technic
When a string vibrates, it does do from a focal point. As it slows down it returns to its natural position and stops 'vibrating'.      This technique is to be used for help with learning a short section of a piece and is designed to work 'relatively' similar to the vibrations of a string. Step 1, is to play a section very slowly (to develope a sense of good tonality and intonation). Step 2, is to play it very fast (the polar opposite of playing very slow & to develope a strong hold on the finger patterns' quick response time). Step 3, is to play it rediculously slow (re-developing the lost sense of a finger patterns' quick response, refer to Step 2). Step 4, is to play it insanely fast (to get a sense of having a really quick finger position and pattern response). Step 5, is to play it just below the desired tempo (to add everything from the recent work with the polar opposites, refer to Steps 1-4). And finally, Step 6, to finish off with a hopefully accomplished goal set originally before you started working on Step 1 (a performance tempo with such beauty and elegance). ©KAT
