Someone told me I’m glowing and that I look like I’m in love and on the outside I said thank you but on the inside I was like its highlighter ho!

Our hearts beat so loud the neighbours think we’re fucking when I’m just trying to find the nerve to touch your face.

The Pina of Western Visayas, and my province Aklan in particular, is the best in the country. We have a Pina Fiber Festival every summer, so if you are in the area (or on the way to Boracay), pick up some good pina! There are some finished dresses and Barongs for sale too, along with locally-made furniture and decor.
ACL 2013: The Pina Story
Kalibo is the largest and oldest piña-weaving and manufacturing place in the country. Historical records show that this cloth was bartered on the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade and reached as far as Greece and Egypt. The piña used for the jusi isn’t the sweet yellow kind you eat, but a variant called Spanish red, brought here from Mexico.
We were immersed in two piña producing places a number of times- La Herminia and the Dela Cruz House of Piña. I think the nicest thing about observing their work wasn’t just in the intricacy of what they were producing- but also that they were happy and well-taken care of in this industry. It was actually dead for a long time but was revived in the mid-80s because of designers like Patis Tesoro who use the piña jusi for their gowns and Barong Tagalogs. We really need to advocate Philippine design and textiles, as well as preserve traditional art forms like weaving!

To obtain the fibers, a long leaf is taken, washed, and dried.

A broken fine ceramic plate (you can’t use anything else or they’ll damage the fibers) is used to scrape the hard outer layer of the shell. There are two kinds of fibers you obtain from this scraping: the bastos, or the first and rougher fibers, and the finer inner fiber which also costs a whole lot more.

The leaves are then washed with water, a little detergent, and a smooth white shell. The shell they say, makes the fibers look whiter and easier to separate. The fibers are then dried until they look like dead blonde hair, and separated individually. These are techniques they have been doing for years.
