Can 10,000 hours of practice really make you an expert at anything?… The psychologists reanalyzed data from six previous studies of chess competitions (1,083 subjects in total) and eight studies of musicians (628 total) for correlations between practice and success, and found huge disparities in how much chess grandmasters and elite musicians had practiced. One chess player, for example, had taken 26 years to reach a level that another reached in a mere two years. Clearly, there’s more at work than just the sheer volume of hours practiced.
New study confirms that the “10,000-hours rule” is a myth. (via explore-blog)

Pete Seeger passed last night, and I was caught a little off guard by that inevitability. I grew up listening to folk music - but didn't understand its place in America until I was older. I have seen Seeger live, which is to say that I (and all the audience) sang along with him. I sang his songs (and that of the Weavers, Arlo and Woody too) with my mom, with my uncle, and at family gatherings.
I am sharing this video specifically as it is a sort of auspicious sign, tonight being the SOTU address, and we need to remember that we are in this together.

What We're Reading
EB: I've been catching up on my pop culture and in the course of some research came across the US Olympic uniforms/fashion show on Harper's Bazaar. I was surprised by the outcry regarding the sweaters. The typography is awful, but all the cuts are slick.
Late edition reading: the genesis of the Hillary Clinton "Planet Hillary" cover for the NYTimes - I don't even know what to say about it. I'm going to let all the others have their opinions.
KO: I just finished reading The Song for Achilles (Madeline Miller) and started David Sedaris's latest. I have a few things on deck, but books always fall to the wayside when i get another project going. To be shared later.

Week in Review: January 19-25
We were focused on music this week: Body&Soul on Sunday 1/19, the soulful dance trinity of Danny Krivit, Joe Claussell, and Francois K at Webster Hall; Wednesday brought Mehliana at the Highline Ballroom (Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana doing unspeakable and enlightened things with keys and percussion.  The week closed out with Gilles Peterson's return from vacation on BBC6 Music Worldwide with GP on Saturday morning (EST).
