Final Project: Light & Shadow
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You are not what others think you are.
In the real world we all have this mask we wear to show the Light (Good) version of us. We do it everywhere: at the workplace and classroom; in front of strangers and family members. However, somewhere deep inside in subconscious there is a shadow part of your soul we usually fight and reject. Most of the people are not ready to meet face to face their dark side of the soul.
You definitely know some people who are being all fake and cute on the outside, and extremely awful in the inside. You probably know some other people who seem very dangerous and terrifying; yet, they have a gentle soul and character. These people are chasing what to show to the world, how to present themselves, and how they want to be under the spotlight.
In this series of photos I demonstrated a basic theory of Persona and Shadow by Carl Jung. The Light and Shadow here is metaphorical, and has nothing to do with the physical light and shadow. A Light of Soul and the Shadow of It.

Writing Prompt for Second Photo
Loneliness and oblivion. These empty benches crowded in one place demonstrate the fullness of this place, but their number only convinces us that we are overwhelmed by the longing for live communication and being. Why is nobody here? Why nobody siting on those benches? People abandoned not just the place itself but the value of social interaction with each other. There is no life in this image. The benches are leaning lonely. The emptiness of this image demonstrates how much people yearn for real communication and the sense of community. This place could be full of life, but it is filled with emptiness. The modern life with digital technologies makes people almost invisible. The social communication is dead and the loneliness is all what's left.

Final Project Proposal: "Light&Shadow"
Title: Shadows Among Us
For the final project, I want to take a look on social issues such as a hostility and hospitality. The hostility is going to be shown in judgmental eyes of people who are looking at someone who they disagree with. The lack of respect, lack of support, and lack of kindness: this is something I'll look for to present the dark side of people's souls. The Light side will be shown in completely opposite actions to those mentioned before. The book “The Picture of Dorian Grey” by Oscar Wilde is a great example of how people might change in an ugly way if you let them do anything they want. It's an example of how he allowed his Shadow (dark side) of personality to thrive because his actions mark his soul and the portrait, but not his outside beauty.
Outcomes:
The plan is to take at least 6-8 images in total. It will be 3-4 pairs of Shadow and Light sides of people's personalities. Each pair of photos should be a complete story of the same human trait, but they also should be a part of the bigger project and connect to one another.
Methods and Materials:
Canon EOS SL3
Photoshop 2025
References:
The book “The Picture of Dorian Grey”

The painting: The Reluctant Fiancée, Auguste Toulmouche, 1866

Influence
Cindy Sherman was my inspiration for this photoshoot. I like how she presented different characters in her self-portrait photography. The only things why I was influenced by her is her story telling in one single picture and how powerful it can be. Even though, Sherman not photographing herself, but her characters, I've decided to take a pictures of myself. There is just one character: me. Cindy Sherman also captures emotions in her photos. She doesn't necessary trying to look beautiful, she just wants to show something important for her. This inspired me to create my own series of images. The feeling of being hopeless and handicapped is something I wanted to show with this series of pictures. However, the feeling is inside hidden under the shell of the indifferent poker-face.
How you look is not always how you feel.

Midterm project “ Golden Hour”
The End.
What is the definition of death? According to Dictionary.com, it is “the act of dying; the end of life; the total and permanent cessation of all the vital functions of an organism.” Most people associate death with tragedy and grief, which is a natural human reaction to such a phenomenon. However, death can also bring relief from pain and suffering. For those who believe in God, it may also be seen as a form of salvation.
With that said, I would like to illustrate how living beings, regardless of their diverse backgrounds, ultimately end in the same way. Everything that happens between birth and death is heavily influenced by the environment and circumstances we experience. Where we are born, how we are raised, and how others treat us all impact our quality of life. Some are not as fortunate as others and endure much more difficult lives than they might have had in a different setting. Yet, even those who live happy lives face the same inevitable end: death.
I explored the topic of death through these images, which capture my vision of the beginning and the end of life. We all come from the same place: our mother’s womb. The start of life looks very similar for all of us, but the life we enter depends on our environment—our roots. Death comes in different shape to each of us, but the outcome remains the same: we stop to exist in the real world. Camera Settings:

Assignment 1 - Choosing Photographer
The photographer I chose for the assignment is Masala Tree. She is focusing on cosplay photography. I love how she is playing with light and shadows on those pictures and their aesthetic. The composition of those pictures is also very strong and interesting, especially in the last picture. It looks like a screenshot from the movie and this is exactly what I love the most! The cinematic effect is something that inspires me. I'm thrilled by her ability to play with color and lights.
