The Keeper of Time and The Dire Magnus

This part of the black reckoning is cute and funny for three (3) reasons:

Emma kissing her brother on the cheek and thanking him is very sweet

The fact that immediately afterwards she calls his planning skills boring is on brand

I find it hilarious that Gabriel tells her they need to wait for someone else to wake up and Emma immediately decides she’s gonna go bother Michael and make this his problem. She said “my sister gets to sleep but my brother will never know peace” and that’s also on brand for her.

thinking about the books of beginning characters and scars...

Gabriel obviously has the most scars; a lot are from fighting monsters, or from the weapons of enemies, but several of the smaller ones are from his teenage years, when he was first learning to wield his falchion, or when he was tromping around the mountains hunting and hiking and got into a bit of trouble. And, of course, the long scar across his face that was made by a bear was one of the few caused by wild animals.

Emma has several small scars, mostly from the shenanigans she gets into (falling out of a tree, climbing a big rock and scraping herself, etc.) and at least one on her arm from trying and failing to befriend a stray cat when she was 8. Her biggest scar is the one on both sides of her hand, from where she was stabbed by the necromati to bond her to the Reckoning in the land of the dead. (But she's bound to get more scars when she's older, when she learns to swordfight and whatnot. She thinks they're pretty cool, and - naturally - bickers about it with her brother.)

Michael doesn't have many scars. There's one on his leg from a fall he took when he was little, a couple small burn scars acquired when in the volcano where he found the Chronicle, and a very faint one on the pad of his thumb, made by the stylus he used with the book of life, but that's it.

Wilamena has more scars than people would expect of her, and she's not fond of them. Pretty much all of them were acquired when she was a dragon, and remained when she shifted back into her normal form. There's a fairly big one on her shoulder, from when her wing was injured, and a few on her arms and legs from fighting Rourke, monsters, and other dragons. She has absolutely no burn scars though, thanks to the dragon's imperviousness to flame.

Rafe has a bunch of scars from his time living in NYC. There are some small ones (and a big one or two) from fights he got into, and a couple burn scars he got when trying to teach the savages magic went awry. He also has a crooked nose; it was broken when one of the kids' lost control of their magic and accidently caused a hard object to hit him right in the face. He hardly got any scars during his time as the Dire Magnus, save for the one on his chest, right over his heart, where Kate stabbed him. (He's ridiculously fond of that one, much to everyone's exasperation.)

Kate has scars and they're are almost entirely small ones from childhood mishaps - a small burn scar from the stove in one of the orphanages, one on her shoulder where a plant scratched her as she chased after her sister in a hurry, one on her leg from falling on the pavement in her rush to get herself and her siblings out of their first orphanage when it burned down - that sort of thing. The exception, and her biggest/worst scar, is the one on her side/torso, where she was shot.

In my countless rereads of the trilogy I realized something. There are only four (4) characters who we get (third-person limited) POVS of in all three books. They are the Wibberly siblings, of course, and Gabriel. Which is interesting for a number of reasons but the main ones I’m interested in are a) sword dad supremacy and b) found family excellence we love one man and the three kids he adopted on sight
