TLDR: Rumi's patterns are a mix of a birthmark and burn scars. She meets Jinu (who's homeless alongside the other Saja Boys), and the two talk about their scars and the things they've been through. When Rumi tells him she wants to tell her friends but doesn't know how, he proposes she write a song. But Rumi doesn't think she can write something like that right away. She needs time. So what better than to have Jinu and his friends pretend to be a boy band and distract her friends??

Rumi's "patterns" are a mix of a birthmark and scarring from the house fire that took her parents lives. She was the sole survivor of the incident and was left in the care of her aunt/godmother, Celine.

She covered her "patterns" up because she felt ashamed of them and because people would just stare at them. Celine didn't know any other way to get rid of them other than plastic surgery (and even that wasn't guaranteed to make them go away completely). So she encouraged Rumi to hide. To cover up. And, if she'd like, when she was old enough, if she wanted to go through with plastic surgery, she'll let her

Time goes by and Rumi's met Mira and Zoey and they form HUNTR/X. And as their status as idols increases, Rumi's anxieties keep growing as well.

Because she wants to stop hiding. To stop being afraid of whatever people think about her birthmark and scars. But every time she thinks about telling the other two girls, she can't. She wants to be stronger. To be brave. Free.

And then she meets Jinu. A boy living in the streets with his partners. They have "patterns" as well.

She ran into him one morning. Her sleeve had rolled up and he saw her scars. He showed her his own, promising that he wouldn't tell anyone. Not that anyone would believe him. Who'd listen to some homeless boy anyways??

Rumi doesn't know why that felt reassuring, but it did. She thanked him and left after shoving whatever change she had in her pocket into his hands. Because she wanted to help him. Totally not pay for whatever that was. Totally because he said he was homeless. Sure, she might have been scammed, but she's also sure she gave him a bit of garbage with her change. So...

Anyways, the two keep running into each other, and as they do, they get to talking.

Rumi finds out how Jinu left his mother and sister at a shelter years ago, when he was about 15. They had limited space and he immediately decided they were the ones who should stay. He didn't have a phone. No way of contacting them. He couldn't even remember the name of the shelter and chances are many shared a name, just different locations. He's not sure if they're even still there. He worked the odd job here or there, with one ending with him being scarred severely on his back.

She told him about how she was afraid of fire for the longest time. It took her parents and left her scarred. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. How she felt like people judged her, when she was a kid and wore short-sleeved shirts. And if they weren't judging her, they saw her as a pity case. They only ever saw her scars. They never saw Rumi. Some people couldn't look her in the eye. They avoided looking at her. They made her feel ugly, like she was a monster that should have died with her parents. Or rather, instead of her parents.

Jinu tells her about his boys, Abby, Romance, Mystery and Baby. No, he doesn't think those are their actual names. No, he doesn't know their real names. Yes, he thinks they're fucking with him. But, it was nice having people who looked out for him. And, while it's not his story to tell, he's sure they'll be up to telling her if she ever wants to meet them. They have scars as well, it's part of what made them confide in each other. Opening up about what hurt them, defending each other if people mocked them for it.

Rumi tells him about wanting to tell her girls and Bobby, her father in all but blood. How she tried but couldn't go through with it. How the day they first met, she ran after chickening out. Again. He must think she's pathetic. She's spent years trying to tell them. Tell them she had scars. A birthmark. Anything. To admit that Celine had any report about the fire involving her survival be removed. Changed. That way no one would know she was there as well. They'd think Rumi only survived because she was at her Aunt Celine's house. Her parents kept her out of the spotlight. Only ever mentioning her in captions of posts as their baby girl. Their little moon. Their little tiger.

She just wanted to tell the people who mattered to her. But she couldn't.

And that's when Jinu proposes she do it through music. She should make a song about it. She's a Hunter after all.

As much as Rumi likes the idea, she doesn't think she'll be able to write anything soon enough. She's not saying it won't work. It probably will. But...

What if something gave her the time to do so? Something gave her the time to gather her thoughts and feelings and allowed her to write that song? Something like...

Oh, a new boy band debuting??

It becomes their project. Jinu and his friends become the Saja Boys. Rumi helps get them new clothes and helps four of them dye their hair. They need to make this work. She needs this to work.

They just have to do this long enough for her to finish her song. That's it. They can keep everything she bought them. But after that, whatever they do is up to them.

She just needs this work long enough to finish one song.

baby saja who compensates by cursing and hitting and snapping and biting like a cornered dog who’s been treated like a toy it’s whole life. baby saja who found out that jinu was going to betray them and side with rumi, and jumped him before they were supposed to perform at the idol awards, forcing them to give up their spot to huntrix. baby saja who spits and hits.

even after huntrix won and jinu and rumi fight back and the boys decide to help, even after everyone is saved and huntrix gives them a home and they become a family, give me a baby saja who doesn’t know how. who doesn’t know how to want it. he becomes touch adverse and wears long sleeves and pants because being touched hurts.

so he punches and kicks and bites. and when hurting them starts to hurt him, he stays out of the house and doesn’t come back until everyone is asleep so he doesn’t have to face the first group of people who have ever loved him because he doesn’t know how to be loved. and it scares him.
