This is the dinning room in my apartment. It’s has elements of different designs. The hutch is an example of baroque design with its attention to detail and drama. Some of the picture frames have the same design. The colors of the walls have a more romantic design. They are calming and comforting. The room itself has more of a Renaissance design to it as it is taller than it is wide. It is also symmetrical.

PORTFOLIO #5
The first picture is an example of Baroque design. It is a hutch cabinet. It was created in the 1950’s. The design has detail and drama. It also attempts to give the impression of grandeur.
The second picture is an example of Renaissance design. It is a building in the middle of Venice, Italy. I would guess that it was build sometime in the 1400-1500’s. The design is taller than wide, symmetrical, and contains multiple columns. All of these are elements of Renaissance design.

Portfolio #4 SCAMPER
This is a picture of a Pyxis med room in a hospital. In my workplace we also have this room. The room is located behind the nurses station away from patient rooms. This design is ineffective and dangerous. When in the med room, there are not eyes on the patient and nurses can often not be found. In an emergency, someone has to run through the nurses station to get to the locked Pyxis room to get help. I think a better design would be to have the Pyxis machine located in the nurses station instead of behind a closed door. A finger print identification is needed to obtain medications so there is no danger of patients or visitors using the machine. This would allow staff to be easily accessible as well as giving the ability to be closer to the patients. It would also be less time consuming.

R.N. Portfolio #3
The first object I have chosen is the shower curtain I have in my bathroom. I chose this object because of it’s color. The color of this design makes me calm. It is not too bright but is also not dark. It gives me a calming effect when I am either entering the shower after first walking up in the morning, or after a long day at work. It is a neutral color which I find is peaceful.
The second object I have chose is the blanket I have on the end of my bed. I have chosen this object because of its texture. The texture of the blanket is very rough. It doesn’t not give me the feeling of comfort due to its texture. While it appears nice for looks purposes on my bed, it does not make me feel comfort. When I touch or look at it I immediately feel uncomfortable.

This is a dinamap machine that we use often in my workplace setting. I believe it to be good design because it contains everything needed to obtain a full set of vital signs with just one piece of equipment. I would communicate it’s importance to an audience by explaining first the importance of vital signs in patient care. To describe its design I would first explain that it stands tall on 4 wheels that make it easily and quickly moveable when in need. I would then describe the screen on the top box that lists all vital signs electronically. There is a small place for a thermometer on the top. There are two hook-ups on the front that fit lines to hook up a blood pressure cuff and a pulse ox. Underneath the box is the battery. There is also a shelf underneath the box to wrap the bp and pulse ox wires neatly. The six pictures I would use in my presentation are a pic of the machine, a pic of a blood pressure cuff on the wall, a pic of a blood pressure cuff manual, a pulse ox monitor, a thermometer, and lastly a picture side my side of all of the equipment separate and a picture of the dinamap machine. I believe that to convey my importance in my presentation I would bring each of the above mentioned objects in so the audience can see how much space is saved having everything on one mobile machine.

This picture represents a typical acute hospital room. Often there are two patients occupying this same size room. This posses a problem for both patient and staff safety. The rooms are small and there are multiple machines used to administer and monitor patient care. The clutter of these rooms, especially when dual occupies, lead the patient vulnerable to negative consequences. The problem this photo represents goes back to the indentification phase of the design process. The specific design problems need to be identified before they can be corrected. Regarding the SCAMPER actions, I believe this problem falls into the Eliminate or Elaborate action. We first need to look at what is essential to this environment and what can be eliminated. By eliminating unnecessary objects, we can create more space to conceptualize a better working model. This design falls in the usability hierarchy of design. While it is functional, it is not safely usable. It posses great safety risk for error. After using the Elimate and Elaborate SCAMPER action, this problem would then rise to the proficiency level of design needs.

For this weeks portfolio assignment I have chosen my apartment kitchen. While it has all of the elements needed for kitchen usage, I feel the design has a major flaw - space. With the window wall separating the kitchen and dining room, it limits the amount of space in the kitchen. This firstly limits cabinet space for organizational needs. It also limits the amount of counter space needed to cook meals. As most individuals living in apartments can not afford the costs of owning a home, cooking at home to save money is a must. My first step in designing a solution to this problem is first identifying the problem and brainstorming how to correct it. Then using conceptualization I would design a way to implement addressing the problem. My design solution would envolve knocking out the window wall, as it is non-weight bearing. This would allow for a more open concept where more cabinets and counter space could flow into an eat in kitchen as opposed to two individual rooms for cooking and eating. This would help with physical ergonomics as it would allow more space for movement as well as more space for additional persons in the kitchen to assist with cooking. This would also help with organizational ergonomics as it would organize the kitchen to be more functional.
