Off Campus Art Event
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my off-Campus art event I choose to go to the art exhibit in FIU called “The Frost Museum”. The main art works that were displayed in this exhibit were photography. There was even an entire exhibit dedicated to Mexican photography which had photos of the economic problems throughout the country and Mexican culture. There was also a small theater that was playing old Mexican movies and documentaries about Mexican artists. The other exhibit contained many different photos from various photographers, many of them being conceptual photography.
I told my friends about my art project and since many of them go to FIU they recommended the Frost Art Museum. When I was there I was a bit disappointed when I found out that the bulk of the exhibits were photo’s considering that I don’t like photography very much. There was another exhibit that had a variety of random art works that were rather interesting but for the most part it was just a bunch of garbage nailed to the wall. The strongest part of the museum was the photography and a lot of it was interesting and had character. For the most part this museum might have something for someone looking for great photography with places they’ve never seen before but that’s about it.

Art History Selfie
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The art piece I choose to recreate for my selfie was “The Scream” by the artist Edvard Munch in 1893. This painting was created with oil, tempera, pastel, and crayon on cardboard. The painting has a very haunting look to it, as if the person in the painting is looking at something that completely appalled him. It is thought that this painting was created to describe the powerful volcanic eruption of Krakatoa, because of the color skies but many artists also believe it to be rendition of someone with mental disabilities because of how distorted the world looks through their eyes. Munch was an expressionist so these theories could be true.
The reason I choose this piece for my art selfie was because I believe I had a lot to work with. When I thought of recreating an image this was the first image that came to my head. I knew that I can create a scene that expressed all my troubles while also staying true to the original art work. For my recreation, I decided to display all the things that stress my out like my school, job, and family, while having these items in the background I also wanted to have face to look very worried and a bit disoriented. I feel like my version reflects the artist’s work because his intent for the painting was to create a character who is deeply disturbed by their surrounding and in my selfie I tried to capture the same themes as his painting just with a different topic.

Art Challenge:
I selected the photography challenge for my art post, and it was harder than I expected. The concept had me puzzled because instead of taking just a regular meaningful photo I had to trick the viewer to interpret something that isn’t bluntly presented. I loved this idea from the beginning because of how creative it was but I encountered many problems when it came to producing an idea. The first problem I encountered was coming up with a creative idea for the photo, my first idea was to create a photo that visually showed someone’s happiness while also representing that underlying pain that they may having. This proved to be quite the challenge.
Halfway through my thoughts I ended changing my mind and choosing to draw instead, and one of my favorite places to read and be in my thoughts is at the beach. While I was there I noticed how many beer bottles were surrounded by me and suddenly the idea came. I grabbed the bottles and started aligning them in a circle, like a cult circle. My first thought was “How can I represents someone content while also showing the darker side of alcohol. Then I put my girlfriends younger brother in the center, looking cool with a pair of shades and cigarette in his hands. I took this photo to represent the cult like following that we connect to alcohol, it’s a part of growing up that we engrained in our society.

The Epitome of Art.
This video is a must watch by all, it combines the twisted ideas of Dali with the beautiful animations of Walt Disney. This perfectly represents art because of the sheer beauty of the work. A slew emotions came flooding to me after watching and analyzing this video.

The Epitome of Art
Tumblr media
The first painting is by Salvador Dali called “The temptation of St. Anthony (1946). This painting has to be one of my favorite art pieces because of the amount of detail and beauty of it. The art piece is dark and twisted while also being displayed very creative.

What is Art? Who is the Artist? And Why does it Matter?
What is the definition of art to me? I find that question puzzling because to me art is subjective. Most people have very different ideas to what art is and what makes somebody an artist, therefore in my opinion I believe there is no true definition of art. Art in my opinion is something created by someone to express themselves and their ideas, and is constructed through various mediums. Ultimately art also has to have a purpose. I don’t mean that art necessarily has to have a specific meaning or deeper message for the audience to capture but instead it needs to be purposely created to express their ideas.
A Perfect example of how people take art out of context (believing it always needs to have a meaning) is the song “I am the Walrus” by the Beatles. This song constantly repeats the same verses “I am the walrus, I am the eggman” which is kind of odd because the lyrics make no sense. People reacted by coming up with crazy theories to the songs deeper meaning and started drawing parallels where there were none, and when asked about the lyrics the Beatles responded by saying that they were randoms lyrics he thought of while he was on acid. This perfectly sums up the wrong assumption that art has to have a deeper meaning to it, because this song had no meaning but it still was created to be enjoyed as an art piece.
Another thing that I believe people have the wrong assumption about is what makes someone an artist. To be regarded as an artist you don’t have to be highly praised or have a fan base eagerly awaiting for your next piece of artistic work, but instead I believe everyone is an artist. If someone spends their time creating something artistic (what ever they believe art to be) then they themselves are the artist. So the artist creates there interpretation of art, but why do they do it and why does it matter? The answer to this is simple, art matters simply because it’s timeless and captures the ideas of different people from many generations. Art has been preserved throughout the years and is one of the most important aspects of our history.
“The arts matter because we matter, and our stories matter. We are moving miracles, walking creators engaging in a cosmic dance. The art we express is timeless.” –Mohammed Sheriff
