British-American Translator

I never really realised (<- this word being an example) how often I have been misspelling words in Canada due to the American spell-check system. However, in any respect, I thought this could launch a minor project to create a translator to convert not only the different spellings of words from British to American english, but also convert different terms (for instance, pants in the UK are usually call trousers!). There are translators that exist like this already, but that’s no fun! So even know I have already generated some code for this and basically have the project working(some minor bugs) I am gonna create a formal project here.

Project name: British-American Translator

Purpose: Design a program which translates spellings between British and American english and interchange common terms for equivalent entities

Inputs: CSV with row 1 as source language and row 2 as destination language, phrase to translate

Analysis: Analyse word and interchange equivalent words and correct spelling to correct dialect (*ise->*ize)

Outputs: Translated phrase with new spellings and equivalent words replaced for dialect

Well, there is the project, I am gonna create a public project on GitHub for this sorts of projects and I will provide the link here. As of writing this, the program can take in single translation words, or takes in a CSV(bulk import function) with a specified source and destination language and creates two dictionaries which are modified simultaneously(UK key, US key). The dictionaries keys map to an array, so the word in either dialect can support multiple alternative translations for a single word. Currently how I handle multiple translations of the same word is just to select one at random. I will note that this is not a highly intelligent translator, in that it analyses the sentence, it simply replaces equivalent words. The translate functionality takes in a sentence and looks for specific spelling differentiations, and also replaces equivalent words in the manor i describe above. There are some issues currently which exist, such as the words are split simply by spaces, so punctuation is included when comparing words which obviously breaks the equivalent word functionality and makes it default to just printing the string how it was inputted. This maps out most of the functionality so far. Again, this is just a side project so bugs are OKAY in my book, but some refinement and robustness might follow.

Flight Planning

Well, this is the first project I am gonna be exploring on here so I guess it's sort of a big deal...

After searching for a programming framework for a long time which could satisfy my creative needs, while I was attending a industrial design convention called Thought @ Work held at the Rochester Institute of technology, I was introduced to openFrameworks. openFrameworks in a nutshell is just a cluster of useful libraries oriented towards creative folks to make all sorts of programs, ranging from simple user interface applications to motion-enabled applications using the Kinect. Well this is awesome, and just what I was looking for. I have a few side projects I am looking to pursue, and this framework is a perfect tool to accomplish these goals. for now, however, I am gonna start small and build my skills in this new environment with an idea inspired by a class on photogrammetry I am currently taking. In a lab I was required to design a flight plan for a plane to gather aerial photos for a user-defined area, and illustrate the exposure points and whatnot associated with these flight lines. immediately in doing this very manual process, I knew this could serve as the basis for my first openFrameworks project. Time to do some planning:

Project name: Flight planning

Purpose: Design an application using openFrameworks which maps a plane's flight path over a user defined area of a map

Inputs: Flight information, camera information, photo requirements, base map with scale

Analysis: Perform intermediate calculation with input data to establish specifics about flight plan such as specific numeric outputs as well as graphic components such as flight line and exposure spacing

Outputs: PDF or other format to display flight plan, animation of plane running flight plan

Well, I figure that I would get this up and running now before I put it off. This is gonna be a place for side projects, plain and simple. Whether it's a concept, an inspiration, or I am just working through a goal I have, this is a place for myself to learn and build on previous thoughts and ideas. No more intro, time to work!
