The achievement of Focus

"..so for the past 30 years, I have been wasting my energy on things that I have no business worrying about." - me to my wife. Why do we love heroes? Why is the idea of them so attractive to us? Maybe because deep down inside, we have a set of principles we believe in and these heroes are the embodiment of these principles come to life. We get to see them doing something we believe in and say

"See, it works!" So we love these heroes, we cherish them, we celebrate them. We quote them, we do our best to follow them. Right now, I would consider Seth Godin, my hero. Although like most people, I would be fine by just celebrating him.. I decided that I should try and do what he is doing, in my context.

Seth Godin's work and ideas are the accumulation of years worth of focus. Many unfortunate things happen to him and he let it roll off his back like it was nothing. He marched on with his ideas and made them real. Even today, when he talks about being kicked out of the Direct Marketing Association.. he says it in such a way as if it happened to someone else. (He got kicked out for proposing 'permission marketing' which was considered heresy at the time but now is commonly practised.)

To him, his work is all that matters and what others do or say, against him, is inconsequential. I used to fuss over issues and say things like: "Shouldn't they do this.." "Why are they like this.." "What were they thinking.." But now, when I encounter incompetency or hear about frustrating issues within my industry.. there is just silence in my mind.

Just pure, calm, silence.

My mind is focused on how can I push things forward as a copywriter. Anything else doesn't matter.
