“There is this one time I got t'meet an elemental o’ the Black Shroud—have ya ever had moments in your life where they’re so…wild that when ya look back on ‘em, y'gotta wonder to yourself it ever even happened? ‘Cause I reckon this is one o’ those cases. Oschon’s beard, it was amazin’. Bein’ face t'face with it was like talkin’ to the sun itself…but instead o’ gettin’ burnt, it lit a new fire inside o’ me. I’d been havin’ a real rough go at life at the time an’ I won’t get into what now, but that moment reminded me o’ who I am an’ made me…better. It gave me the courage I’d been needin’ for somethin’.”

The Stoked Flame
Tumblr media
In a secluded corner of Southern Thanalan, the smell of meat and popoto stew wafted around, filling the camp with the scent of a late supper. The stars were out in force, having laid siege to the skies of the savanna west of the Sagolii. A tall, sturdy-built Sea Wolf woman stood watching the boiling pot. Now and then she’d look over to her wife, a sun-kissed Seeker who looked like she’d seen many a good brawl, and the young Seeker boy currently wielding a worn scepter.

Reminding myself to respond to this when home
Prompt #30: Close
It was during late nights that it came upon her, that terrifying loss of control when her hard earned muscle trembled powerlessly. Every time she harbored the hope that it was her last incident only for a fresh one to come and shatter that confidence. There was no hiding it from Jet, the panted breaths as that shameful feeling of panic betrayed her every time, those comforting arms wrapping about her tightly. No words spoken between them, the herbalist’s words had left little for them to discuss. The poison had been insidious, moons after her treatment it still waited to leap upon her in her weakness.
Tohk pushed herself harder during the day, straining lungs and muscle harder than she ever had as her endurance extended and power waxed, her leanly muscled body working tirelessly to stave off those effects as long as she was able. But it only took a single night laying happily beside her nocturnal love in a pleasant liquor-induced haze for her body to fail her. The elezen had claimed nerve damage, but she felt no slower or clumsier.
This would not stand. She had no faith that it would not come more frequently, or strike in the middle of a bloody struggle. Death was never far at any point in her short life, but she was not so eager to greet it as she once had been. She would drown in the blood of a thousand foes before letting anyone take her from Jet. But if nerveless fingers loosened her tight grip then what could will alone accomplish?
Pushing up to her feet, the sailor ran a hand through her shaggy black mane. Sheets fell clear, leaving her bared in the darkness of the bedroom even as the Keeper curled up more tightly around the warm spot her body left in the mattress. Pressing a light kiss to Shade’s cheek, Tohk left soundlessly to pull on clothes and her weapons. It was past time to speak to Sage. Perhaps she would know of an avenue to pursue that the miqo'te had never considered. If not, then she feared that reaper would not be content merely breathing on the back of her neck and the numbing touch would settle upon her shoulder.
She would do what she needed to keep that unwanted thief from coming any closer.

At least they didnt....
Prompt #28: Echo
The itchy fabric shifted across the Seeker’s shoulders as she swaggered down the well-lit streets of Mist. One hand resting against the hilt of a long-knife, fingers drumming the leather, while the other was comfortably wrapped about RC’s waist with her thumb hooked through the Keeper’s belt loop. The miqo'te had her own arm draped across the sailor’s shoulders, the only thing that made that infernal scratching cloth tolerable. After so long spent on that peaceful island Tohk had already become well accustomed to a more casual method of dress between the two. At least on those rare occasions when they saw fit to put even a single stitch on.
As much as she may have prefered that little arrangement, they both knew that the time to return to civilization would come. So they walked on, following that familiar path toward the well-appointed grounds of a large building. “Blue Sky Ventures” was emblazoned across the sign hanging out front, drawing a slight grunt of recognition as they crunched across gravel toward the front door. Shade reached for it first, neither of them showing much concern for whether the place was on operating hours or not, simply letting themselves into the building.
“Huh.”
To say that it was opulent would have been an understatement, at least to Tohk as she looked about the room. A far cry from the usual sort of establishment the two found themselves, particularly since they’d taken to traveling about Eorzea. That ramshackle cabin they’d spent over a moon snugly tucked inside would hardly find use as even kindling in that sitting area. Even as she took in the sights, no small part of her wondering just how much a number of decorations would fetch at market, Jet detached herself to go stand before a large glass tank. Fine carved wood provided the sort of ornamentation that the Seeker had long since come to expect from Sage, but the creature inside was a new sight.
Sounds of chatter and clanking mugs from below were ignored for the moment as the former-captain stepped up beside her wife to raise a finger to tap against the glass with that resounding ‘thunk’ against the thick material. Thicker than it looked, given the clarity of the view within as a magnificently powerful silver shark slowly circled in the waters before them. Tohk’s rasping voice rose just as RC opened her own mouth to speak, a grin quirking up the corners of her lips.
“D'ya wanna 'ave a bite, love?”
“Want to eat it, sugar?”
That confident smirk crossed the Seeker’s face as her wife mirroed her thoughts exactly. The only thing intruding upon their exchange was the sudden call from the bar area below.
“I recognize those voices.” Sounds of rapid movement came, as the Raen’s voice rose more urgently, “And you two had best not eat my shark!”

I’ll spare the long, long, long paragraphs of praise for now and simply say that Nai is one of the artists that puts -so- much of themselves into their work. She cares deeply about conveying the proper emotion, the meaning behind a piece, and it was a joy to comm her not just because of the quality of her work but because it brings me great joy to take part in the artistic expression of such a close friend.
This doesn’t mean I’m bullying you and Falex any less though. Hu4hu4hu4.
Jk Ilu Nai, and thank you

This was a wonderful scene. Tohk best at stealth.
Prompt #13: Results
It should have been a considerably easier task, Shade had taught her well enough, though her own efforts were far slower and less sure than the Keeper’s own. Working the lockpick carefully, she felt about for those rollers. Pins. Whatever the terminology was for the damnedable devices! A few clicks as it failed to catch correctly, impatience steadly growing as a low growl began to build in the back of Tohk’s throat. A few more failures had those picks moving less dexterously, twisting about a bit too roughly until one of them simply snapped with a quiet ‘ping’ inside.
Stepping back, she let out a low breath in a rumble. Gripping the door handles, the muscles in her arms tightened, before she gave a rough pull backward. A splintering crack tore free the iron grips, length of chain still wrapped about them and heavy lock firmly in place. Hurling the broken thing down to the door, she lifted a foot and slammed her foot into the door to sending it smashing inward, a hinge ripping free as it hung off-balance in the darkened barn.
“There’s yer gorramn lock picked y'swivin’ shite!”
For the time being she would continue to leave the subtle work to her wife. After all, the damn door was opened. Glancing over one shoulder, she fixed Mahjo with those orange eyes, shining in the darkness. Practically challenging her to comment on the shattered door.

PROMPT #1: SUBMERGED
It began as it did every other night: dark, wet, and suffocating as he plummeted. He hung suspended in the sea, drifting away from the cacophonous fire-fight of booming cannons and splintering wood. Above him, hulls crashed into each other, the thunderous noise dulled by the ravenous, abyssal void. Below him was the promise of a watery grave; unseen tendrils that tugged him into the depths. His lungs burned and he yearned for air, for the water had stolen his breath. His legs refused to kick; to propel him up, for the cannonball had torn away his strength. He could not move, he could not shout, for the sea had claimed him again.

Elusive Memories
A small hand rose, brushing aside unruly brown bangs.  A huff left the small kit as yellow-green eyes cast about the small Limsan apartment inquisitively.  “Momma?”
A few unsteady steps are taken, ears twisting and pivoting about, seeking any sign.  His hand lowered slowly, a stuttering, stifled sob that was only half-choked back emerging from him as he rubbed at a scrape on his leg.  It was hardly anything, an assortment of small scratches and a few drops of blood, but still a tear came down from his eyes.  Another plaintive cry, voice wavering, “Momma?”
Suddenly both ears swiveled toward the bedroom, his head soon following, eyes locking on the approaching woman.  Her features were shrouded, as if backlit by an intense light.  He couldn’t remember…couldn’t picture her face as she knelt.  He couldn’t place the color of her hair as her arms wrapped around him.  Her eyes were all he could see in that gray, green to match his own, as she whispered into one of those long ears.  “My poor Maze, what happened to you my love?”
He felt the kiss against his cheek from that faceless silhouette.  The brush of her fingers through his unruly hair, and her own tail wrapping about his small frame.  “Momma.” was all he could say, nestling into that comforting, featureless warmth.

Prompt #1: Submerged - A Definition
Khron muttered to himself as he entered his study, rubbing at aching joints and grumbling about the cold weather.  Long brown ears fluttered slightly as he was pleased to find the hearth there already filled with a roaring flame.  Quiet cracks and pops occasionally break up the quiet of the bookshelf-filled room, a red glare thrown over the lone window, partially masking the flurries just outside.
He crosses to an old, plush armchair, veritably falling into it.  A few “mph’s” and “grmph’s” accompany the taxing effort of getting comfortable before he reaches over to pull a book from atop the nightstand beside him, careful to keep it clear of the glass-encased candle lamp there.  A breath is loosed, blowing dust free from the cover to reveal scrawling cursive gilded into the cover: “A Description of Things” it reads.  At the bottom in smaller font is: “As penned by C’maze Tia”.   “So,” the brown-haired Seeker finally speaks, his voice a pleasant, deep tone with the practiced mannerisms of an accomplished storyteller, “You wish to know the meaning of the word ‘submerged’ do you?”  He nods knowingly, licking his thumb before beginning to work his way through the pages.  “Then let us consult the works of an old acquaintance of mine.  Let’s see here…”  He hummed quietly, reading words as he passed over them,  “Sublimate….sublime….Submerged!  Here we are, now then, let’s see here.”
The book is adjusted slightly to better catch the light of the lamp, and he leans in slightly, squinting.  “Ah yes….Submerged: The past tense of the process by which two submersible vehicles are combined to create a larger one.  Submerged.”  The book is clapped shut, and a devious wink is given.  “If you desire to learn more of this wisdom, do come back tomorrow!”
