theimperiusrex‌:
He pauses, green eyes take her in, her stance tells him she will fight if she has to, her blade is shape enough to cut through the tough nets but holds no fear for the Avenging Son. He cannot be killed by this mere blade, but humans were often more dangerous than the weapons they wielded. She was human was she not? Except he could spy no breathing device, nothing that would allow her to breath and speak underwater.
Magic then.
From his dealings with Strange he knew better than to trust what his eyes showed him, she must have some magic, an invisible ability. Or she could be a mutant. Namor slowly closes the distance, stopping short of her blade.
“I do not mourn one more drowned lung man. They knew the perils of the sea, in whatever form it may take.”
He is fast, his hands a blur as he grabs her wrist and rips the blade out of it, tossing it behind him to let it sink to the sea bed.
“Do not threaten a Prince of the Blood. Next time you pull a blade on me you best use it quickly.”
Tumblr media
He released her wrist and tries to look for gills, to see if she was a hybrid like him but he cannot see any, what was she?
“Are you the one responsible for the other incidents?”
really, shock won out.  she had not expected him to challenge her space or to view her as a hostile threat.  she almost numbly watched the knife sink down to the sea floor and nearly didn’t hear the question posed  to her.  the initial reaction was to release a pulse of water between them to better place space between the pair of them.
wait, what was that about other incidents?  right.  there had been a shark finning vessel, but also the whaling vessel to the north.  a sheepish expression appeared and she bowed her head with her hands worrying over one another as she tried to think of the best way to explain all of this.  instead, what came out was --
“ the blade was never for you, “ great job, kai.  “ I meant no threat or harm to you, just these nets and . . . now my blade is there and I’m here, “ oh yes, this was going swimmingly.
Tumblr media
she drew in a deep breath ( so-to-speak ) and let out a heavy sigh, bubbles accompanying it.  she felt ( and looked ) like a kid being scolded by their parent and she knew it.  “ only a small number, I set up the damaged vessels to become reefs in time.  I also collect the nets so the wildlife won’t get inadvertently caught in it.  I’m just trying to help protect the seas . . . “

theimperiusrex‌:
He watches, amazed as a girl, who by all accounts looked human, used the sea as a weapon to kill other humans. There had been numerous accounts of certain poachers and other fishing vessels being overturned or destroyed by waves. Even on calm waters suddenly a large wave would appear and the entire operation would go under.
Namor didn’t care about their deaths, at all, it only might less poachers he would have to track down himself. He did care when it came to very powerful men demanding laws be placed to limit his domain. They hadn’t outright said it was due to their operations being systematically wiped out but Namor was no fool. He wanted to know the cause, and had no concern with anyone trying to place restriction on him. How could they? He was the sea, and no one controls the sea.
He slips his head slowly underwater and takes in a deep pull of water, she is moving quickly away from the site of the incident, one man is thrashing in the water near him, he is losing his air, but Namor ignores him as he sinks further down, weighed by his boots, Namor has no pity for those who harm the creatures in his realm.
Tumblr media
Instead he swims after the girl, he would know who she was for now he follows as a silent shadow.
Tumblr media
there was a weight and a guilt that came with casting the men into the sea, to leave them to the mercy of the sea itself and the creatures within.  if they could swim, then it would be a matter of the cold killing them first or the animals great and small could make a meal of them.  or if they could not swim or tired easily, they simply would succumb beneath the waves.  while her namesake spoke of calm, she was anything but.
instead of making a hasty escape, her focus turned to the nets they had left cast within the waters.  her movements were deft and controlled as she swam at times or used bursts of self created currents to propel her from one place to another.  she produced a knife from where it had been sheathed against her calf to cut away the nylon fabric to help free the entrapped mammals and fish alike.
this would have otherwise become one of the many ghost nets that floated throughout the oceans and became death upon the currents, attracting larger and larger predators that would get captured and become part of the ever growing lure.
it was easily fifteen minutes before she realized she wasn’t alone, it was more a glimpse of movement from the corner of her eyes but also the respectful nature of the creatures she saved -- they were grateful to her or anyone that helped them, but only in the way they’d treat a surface dweller that created these problems in the first place.  no, they were showing true respect and deference for another nearby.
knife still in hand, she turned to face the other but it was not held in an aggressive manner.  he had yet to pose her a threat, she felt she bore no threat to him either.  rather, her job was not done.  “ those men needed to be stopped, no one was going to do anything on the surface, “ she explained, pointing above her to the capsized boat.

OPEN OCEAN SHENANIGANS FOR @THEIMPERIUSREX ---
Tumblr media
she was part of conservation and protection groups : she did her part to protect the seas in all legal aspects.  she attended meetings, she spoke before various figures in the government to help sway their minds to the logic presented to them.  but there were still open water nets that caught all matter of fish.  there were still illegal fishing expeditions where they caught countless sharks, cut off their fins and dumped them back into the water to die a slow and painful death.  there were the whale hunters well beyond their legal borders and their alloted quotas.  it was too much.  she couldn’t just collect garbage from the ocean and call it a day.  there was SO MUCH MORE.
so she decided to take matters into her own hands.  she tracked the geo-tag of a known shark finning vessel and crew.  but there was no boat for them to notice as she swam up under them.  kai had a moment of doubt about what she was doing but being surrounded by the blood in the water from the drowning sharks . . . she saw red in more than one way.  she knew this was what had to happen.
diving deeper, she focused on the water itself and swam out to a point where she knew a wave could begin and reach the cresting point.  when she made the approach, she brought the excess water with her to create what would be called a rogue wave.  except this time when the wave crested over the vessel, she made sure the water was more intelligent : it went where she wanted it to go, flooding out the cabins and corridors.  a current guided under the bottom of the vessel encouraged it to capsize fully, spilling their bounty into the sea but also the crew.

alright kiddos, I’ve been MIA this past week because I’ve been doing all of my pre-op testing and work done.  we’re in the final hours now and in the wee hours of the 13th, I’m getting surgery on my sinuses.
understandably, i’m anxious and nervous and trying to stay calm but surgery is always a scary thing.  any well wishes, prayers, thoughts, etc will be greatly appreciated.  i’ll reach out when i’m feeling human-ish to let people know I’m alright.
but i wanted to let people know what’s going on.  i’ll probably queue this to reblog around the time of the surgery so the daylight folks see it too.

Please watch this video and focus on the two Hawaiian women. There’s a lot of sensationalization going on in the media over the eruptions on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. Native Hawaiians believe in Pele-honua-mea (Pele of the sacred land) to be the goddess of fire, lightning, volcanoes, and the creator of the Hawaiian islands. We are not scared of the lava she sends our way, and we will not grieve over material possessions she takes when restoring her home.
“The Native Hawaiian viewpoint is this: we will never own our land. This is Pele’s home and to come in and say ‘Pele you go here’ in her house is HEWA”

Quote
What’s difficult about being from Hawaii is that everyone has a postcard view of your home. Hawaii lives vividly in people’s minds as nothing more than a weeklong vacation – a space of escape, fantasy and paradise. But Hawaii is much more than a tropical destination or a pretty movie backdrop — just as Aloha is way more than a greeting. The ongoing appropriation and commercialization of all things Hawaiian only makes it clearer as to why it is inappropriate for those with no ties to Hawaii, its language, culture and people to invoke the Hawaiian language. This is uniquely true for aloha – a term that has been bastardized and diminished with its continual use. Most who invoke the term aloha do not know its true meaning. Aloha actually comes from two Hawaiian words: Alo – which means the front of a person, the part of our bodies that we share and take in people. And Ha, which is our breath. When we are in each other’s presence with the front of our bodies, we are exchanging the breath of life. That’s Aloha.

HEADCANON -- ERUPTIONS ON THE BIG ISLAND
kai and her family have a home in kona, thankfully on the other side of the big island and well away from the dangers presented by the eruptions still ongoing.  that said, ever since the eruption began, she has returned back to hawaii to be with friends and family.  they do what they can to help those affected, whether it is bringing supplies from the west side of the island to those that need them on the east or helping cook meals for the shelters housing the displaced.
home is a massive concept and of importance to her.  while it might not be her physical home that is affected, it has the same essence of home all the same.  fortunately she is able to continue her work via long distance.

HEADCANON -- ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST
kai has a master’s degree in marine biology with a focus on environmental conservation.  her family is so connected to the oceans, her people and history is so connected to the oceans, that she felt the drive to dedicate her life to protecting the seas.
she works with SEA LEGACY and 4OCEAN as a means to help.  sea legacy is dedicated to the education of the masses as to the importance of the sea, as well as bringing change to laws that could help better protect the oceans.  she serves mostly as a researcher since the two founders have always been the most vocal aspects of the foundation.  with 4ocean, she works as one of those that cleans the ocean.  they have a simple premise: donate x amount or buy a bracelet, and for each donation or purchase, they will clean a pound of trash from the oceans.  since she can survive indefinitely under the water and at greater depths than a human, she makes a point of spending time collecting as much trash as possible.
above all else, her focus will always be to protect the seas.
even when she does the professional mermaid gig, it is because it is part of bringing attention to an event focused on conservation and protection.  gone are the days where she did it for birthday parties or making an easy dollar.

Mermaid moodboard : Polynesian mermaids
Like their lava sisters, those mermaids are dark of hair and warm of skin. They can resist to monster waves and strong currents and they long for land where their lava sisters are. They often wander near ships and crafts, helping sailors to travel safely, guiding them to new islands. Their tail is usually green or blue, mixing with the shade of the sea. Those mermaids are joyful and kind; and often, they can be found relaxing in the reefs playing with sea turtles and other fish.
