Inspiration and examples
For assessment 3, decided on basing our work on the weekly concept ‘collaboration and community’. We took inspiration from Rirkrit Tiravanija’s Untitled (Free) in 1992 New York. In this work, he converted a gallery into a kitchen and subsequently served rice and Thai curry for free to the visitors.
We took a inspiration from this as we found it intriguing that he found a new and interesting way to invite the the visitor to view or experience the art. It makes the art unique. The fact that this also allows for more social interaction between the artist and the visitor was something that we wished to incorporate into our assessment. This also includes allowing for the viewer/visitor to become part of the art and contribute to it, leaving a part of themselves on it.

A scrapped Idea
We decided to create a series of simple slides to act as a visual guide whilst we presented. This was going to be displayed while we explained what Children’s Day is and the tradition of the carp fish. We later realised that this would make our presentation seem boring and that this form of presenting was not advised by the teacher. Therefore, we decided to scrap this idea.

FINAL ARTWORK The final artwork is a interactive collage work that focuses on childhood and collaboration. This work was inspired by Japanese Koinobori and was created as a response to the importance of Children’s Day not only in Japan, but in many other countries as well. Celebration of youth and innocence is not appreciated greatly in Australia unlike Japan. This artwork reminds and shows that it should be changed. When the audience opens the flaps, a piece of childhood is revealed to create a sense of nostalgia. Three crucial elements of childhood are depicted from the head of the fish down to the tail. To interact with the audience, we provided a blank template of a Koinobori. The class will design the Koinobori however they like with no restrictions.

Experiment 5: ☁️ Revealing our Nostalgia ☁️ In this experiment, we realised the illustration and the phrase on the Koinobori was too simple and did not portray our messages clearly with depth. We experimented with collage making by cutting out flaps of the fish and placing pictures we found on magazines and online under to “reveal” a sense of our childhood to the audience. Lego and Tom and Jerry were a nostalgic part of our childhood so we decided to incorporate these elements into the interactive collage as well.

Experiment 4: We are all Children at Heart 💓 Continuing on from our previous experiment, we finalised our design for our Koinobori. We illustrated on each intricate water droplet-like patterns to the body of the fish. On the tail, we decided to add our phrase “We are all Children at Heart” but intentionally added grammar and spelling mistakes to represent our inner children. Our design is collaborative as the audience will also have a template ( the same template we created our Koinobori with) to design however they want as well to bring their inner child out.

EXPERIMENT 3 @moniquesonadad1002 and I printed out our fish templates and designed it like how children in Japan do on Children’s Day. We experimented with not just 2D formats but also with 3D by cutting out sections within the template and shining light through it. The light idea was too flimsy and didn’t look appealing so we decided to add intricate details to the fish.

Experiment 1
The koinobori (carp fish kite) can be created through different methods. We decided on having an interactive element in our assignment. One of our initial ideas was to have everyone in the class to create their own koinobori.
Through our research, we realised that creating a koinobori as a class would take longer than 10 minutes and include multiple steps and materials.
This experiment was an attempt to create a koinobori using the least amount of materials and the least amount of time. We also tried to find the most simple method so that it would be easy to follow.
The result of this experiment was mediocre as it didn’t seem that much could be developed from this.

EXPERIMENT 2:
On Children’s day in Japan, Japanese children and their families make fish kites as a tradition to symbolise freedom, strength and energy.
Our group decided to make an artwork that allows the audience to participate in making and decorating the fish. Through this interactive activity, the audience is able to understand that everybody is a child at heart and Children’s day should be celebrated by everyone.
For our second experiment, we decided to create fish templates on Illustrator to make an interactive artwork. By doing this, we can experience what it is like for the Japanese to celebrate Children’s day. In our first experiment, we realised that making a Koinobori with origami took too long so we decided to experiment different ways in which we can make the process shorter as well as deliver the message. We decided to experiment with Illustrator to create a fish template where the audience decorates their own koinobori.

Assessment 3: Brainstorm and Research on Events
Group: @moniquesonadad1002  and @kellyadad
For our assessment 3, we decided to research two events individually and come together to choose the most appropriate and interesting event. We decided to focus on Children’s day in Japan as it was very interesting and had tradition.
LA TOMATINA
Festival that is held in Valencian town of Buñol, East of Spain
People throw tomatoes and get involved in a tomato fight for entertainment
Considered ‘world’s biggest food fight’
More than one hundred metric tons of over ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets
40,000- 50,000 people crammed in to the tomato fight
2019: 28th of August
No one really knows how it started but it is purely a tradition and for entertainment
The rules include
Squishing the tomatoes before throwing them as it will be less painful
No sharp objects

CHILDREN’S DAY
A day recognised to celebrate children.
Each country has different dates
Monique and I decided to focus on Children’s day in Asia as it is celebrated more in countries such as Japan and Korea.
May 5th is children’s day in Japan and Korea
Families celebrate the healthy growth and happiness of children
Became a nation holiday in 1948
They make fish lanterns and kits to celebrate this day / event

Rationale
The work, “Poverty Places” is a short clip artwork that depicts homelessness in wealthy, luxurious areas. The work explores the notion of binary opposites between wealth and poverty and despite its change in context and time, poverty will still exist.
The collage artwork in the short clip was inspired by Matt Black, an American photographer who captures the tragic state of poverty through a black and white filter. He focuses on issues of poverty and immigration by capturing close ups and intimate pictures of these under privileged people. From his works, I was inspired to take photographs of homeless people and Photoshop it on to unimaginable, ultimately opposing places. Furthermore, I was also heavily influenced by Frank Fickeisen, a Berlin based photographer who takes candid photographs of homeless people around his geographical area. After analysing and researching deeper into his photographs, it made me think of the homeless people I walk past every day and their geographical location. It made me further think about the idea of what if these people were located in front of high end luxury stores instead of a park bench and how they would be perceived. The change of context and time in the artwork create and offer new insights.
My first experiment to activate and trigger my thought process consisted of recreating a homeless poster/sign out of a piece of paper shopping bag I found on the streets. By doing this, I was able to emerge myself into the life of a person suffering from poverty and really get thinking of how to address this topic of binary opposites.  I cut the bag so that the handle still remained for people to hang on their neck. During my research, I noticed that there were spelling errors and messy hand writing on these signs so I purposely made grammatical errors and copied a kid’s handwriting.
As my second experiment, I decided to recreate my idea of homeless people being located in front of high end luxury areas. Using Adobe Photoshop, I gathered pictures of homeless person and collaged them inside and outside the picture of a Gucci store. I liked this idea as it created a heavy juxtaposition between the two binaries and triggered new insights within the audience.
With this collage, I then began my third experiment of using iMovie to create the final short video artwork. To show the difference between just the store and the store with homeless people in it, I experimented with iMovie and video cutting tools to cut frames and make it flicker back and forth these two stills. I added recordings of the city sounds of cars passing by, people talking and loud transport noises to allow the audience to emerge themselves in the homeless person’s environment. The sounds are also consequent throughout the entire 10 second clip. This portrays the idea that despite one’s change in location, poverty still cannot be altered and that the value will still be the same. At the end of the clip, if listened carefully, coin dropping/ donation sounds can be heard to once again reinforce the idea that people still suffer from poverty despite their locations and background.
The last experiment involved glitch art. To effectively show the transition between context and location of these homeless people, I used glitch in my short clip. To learn how to use glitch layovers in video editing, I referred to “Pure Catharsis” on YouTube and used one of the layouts provided. The settings were changed to blue/green screen on iMovie and the glitch layover was placed accordingly to draw the audience in.
The final 15 second clip artwork explores the notion of poverty and wealth and how this ideology exists despite the change in context, time and location. The audience are able to gain new insights to how high end luxury brands like Gucci are just curated to form a perfect image of luxury and when homeless people are edited on, the image changes dramatically. Overall, the work “Poverty Places” accurately offers new insight to the theme of wealth and poverty.

Assessment 2

This video highlights the reality of the rich vs poor. The parody of Burger King to Hunger King was very appealing. Hungary’s recent ban on homeless people led to many people suffering as they had no place to live and also get fined for it. I might look further into the idea of homelessness and the contrast of a higher power brand.
