Promotion and curatorship
The role of the curator is to oversee the organisation and installation of art works for exhibition purposes as well as having an understanding of the works and the conceptual attributes.
Good communication skills is necessary as working as part of a team may be required. The ability to use initiative and work independently is also a key role. The curator not only hosts but looks after the bussiness arrangements, planning layouts, and collections. They are also responsible for the catalogue of work and promotional materials.
Through out the research one of the main points of a successful exhibit is the audience, listing email addresses,  VIP lists , word of mouth and getting involved with other societies etc.
The poster ,leaflets or flyers I’ve noticed need to be clear and give only the information needed eg what? Where? When? Any other information will make posters busy and may mean people just dismiss it . Leaflets or catalogues are always a good way to promote during events and can be taken away as memorabilia.
Audience participation is a great way to encourage people to attend and fully experience an event/exhibit is to have demonstrations and work shops to allow spectators to be involved with the process of art aslo allowing the artists to get maximum benefit from taking part in the exhibit.
Understanding the hosting requirements for exhibitions.
In a meet with GI director and curator today it was really interesting that neither of them had continued with being the artist creating work and had both decided that they were more interested in researching and planning events. It was really nice to hear that a more caring approach has been taken into consideration when it comes to not the piece of work but establishing a caring supportive role between the director and artist.
Another great point was that of the relationship between the space and the art work.
It’s important that the work and the venue/ space work in balance and harmony .
There are sites that you can build free gallery portfolio , these sometimes end up being more hassle than they are worth however it’s a good way to get started , keeping it simple and not having too many sites etc means that you are more likely to be consistent with communication and self promotional information.
Evaluation 2
Fortunately for this year we have a team of students together with experienced working artist tutors to promote our work, tasks have been shared out to take responsibility for aspects such as Instagram take over, acting director and proof readers.
Self promotional materials
Cards to take away
Stickers and headed paper for invoices, packing etc.

Installation space and floor plan.

Keeping up to date .
We used padlet and chat group with word/ excel documents.
It’s a good idea to keep a record of all emails and planning updates.
It’s a good idea to contact galleries, museums and art establishments and offer to volunteer whenever possible. Signing up to newsletters helps to keep me updated with opportunities , events online and artist articles.
Funding opportunities arose and are in process of being accepted, during this research there have been multiple calls for residency and funding opportunities. This became one of my roles within the group , securing a venue for future events in collaboration with cumbernauld alternative initiative Mugshack.  Unfortunately the main contact is unable to attend the show however it may be possible to create a virtual viewing event. This became popular with galleries and events during the covid lowdowns and can still be seen to be a good way to visit exhibitions worldwide.
The downside of social media.
It's important not to fall into the selfie pothole of promoting through sites such as Instagram. Too often the artist can be caught up in posting selfies, family snaps and other personal views etc. In order to be taken seriously as an artist its a better option to keep the artist portfolio for art and promotional purposes only. Personally I have found I can be a fan of work but when too much personal information and images are posted the art gets lost and the artist then becomes a personality to like or dislike. This can bring with it difficulties when attracting clients ,bidding for exhibits and residency opportunities.
If your going to be a brand be your own brand . Qr codes are increasingly popular however personally I find them easy to dismiss and ignore.
Proposal Discussion
My work will require a plain white background wall, here I will be hoping to display the current creative work of black and white photographs and creative writing piece.
As the piece involves narrative concepts the positioning of each will be in order of story boards . Each board will tell a story
Final considerations for opening
Error! Filename not specified.
Installation and venue considerations.
Fire and safety planning locating fire exits and accessibility. ♿ always prepare for wheelchair users.
Rota to be confirmed.
Always be open to collaborators suggestions.
Use of cables , lighting and equipment safety planning , maintenance and availability must be considered and preplanned before set up . Plinths , tables and wall space or panels and the ease of navigation will be important when looking at placement and juxtaposition of works. Personal artist statements and name plates will be required for each participant of installation.

Kelvingrove Glasgow
As these venues are of a large multi floor and intimate spaces it was intresting to see how the work flowed throughout.
Although there's obvious disparity in the work this was done through conceptual art. Each level or space visited had a common theme yet included a variety of techniques and methods.
I found that the Salvador exhibit was a very intimate space and used the whole room as pat of the installation.
The main focus being the painting only one was on display at this time , the room was dark and had a very alter church atmosphere using lamps and material drapes.
I believe this was a deliberate decision to draw attention to the religious and personal contemplation space as if somewhat confessional, private you could hear a pin drop the audience chatter was quiet and it felt like you were invading others personal space so we waited and showed respect to those viewing before us .

As websites and personal domains can be costly especially for my own practice, I have found the use of blogs and social media as an effective way to gain momentum and exposure to promote my work . Free sites are available through WordPress, WordPress, tumblr portfolios and groups or pages can be created through popular social media sites including Facebook. Newsletters can be useful if using sites and email templates can be used in mail chimp this involves creating a sign up link to build an audience, these should be informative using understandable language, readable fonts and intesting, to keep emailing lists active its important not to spam accounts ensuring all legal data privacy policies makes readers feel confident when sharing email and personal information. Another benefit of social media sites include the opportunity for audience participation and feedback, however followers reached are often of like-minded artists this can open up collaboration opportunities. However if the main purpose of promoting artworks for sale this can be limited as the followers are often more likely to be looking for inspiration and techniques ideas.
When raising awareness of upcoming events the use of apps such as canva can be used to create posters and informative posts. The best way to encourage people to attend is to create interesting, bespoke and professional images including the times , dates and venues. This can include works of interest to inform people of the proposed works to be viewed on the site of installation.
I have found that it's also a good idea to use printed poster or flyers in and around the local communities and campus. The college radio station could also be used to make announcements.
Blogging has always been an interesting approach and format to engage others and give a personal touch when displaying work , blogs could be used as a type of virtual exhibition.
When looking at physical promotional materials such as business cards it's important to have contact details easily readable an image or logo that matches services or expertise is necessary to promote the intended service or sellable work.
This has been difficult for me as at the moment I am still finding a career path . However I have found that providing making workshops has worked well in the past this may be something I revisit and provide within schools and community hubs, clubs and groups in my local area.
Free online Ebooks, sales pitch techniques and sessions specifically designed to help artists plan and sell work these have been easy to follow and are also a good way to promote your business.

Promotional ideas and evaluation
I have found some other marketing opportunities through sites that can expand the audience within certain fields including personal gallery portfolio for photography and its been exciting seeing the peer awards.
Another way to sell pints in a mass distribution would be to join up with websites and adding shopping carts to websites and media accounts.
This can increase sales and often offers quick and efficient tools for invoices and postage costs to allow for business administration purposes.

Smaller businesses are often advertising for arts and craft makers and sellers for a small monthly fee you can rent a shelf or space to sell pieces from all media and craft products.

Another great way to find research work and links to articles and journals can be found on subjects of interest when visiting online sites this has been helpful during my studies.
