no hate, but I actually got a completely different takeaway from Shallan Moments like that in TWOK and WOR. I find moments like these to be perfectly within character when considering the way her trauma has affected her. that doesn't mean she's sensible or logical, and expecting her to be is (in my opinion) a misunderstanding of her character.

especially in the early books, shallan is incredibly naive. She does not have a developed sense of consequences because she blocks out anything that is mildly inconvenient to her. She forces jokes into every conversation because that's the only way she was able to peacefully navigate her atrocious home life.

I guess my point is that I've seen so many people hate shallan for acting unreasonable and annoying when that is entirely the point for her character. she is supposed to be these things. I could easily argue that each protagonist has an equally long list of intentionally crucial character flaws as shallan, and she always seems to be the one to get the most hate for it. if you dislike her character, that is totally fine. that's frankly justified in the early books, to an extent. but I don't like it when people throw her character away solely because of her flaws without going into *why* she is written this way.

I was really hoping my reread would make me like Shallan more somehow but nope, if anything I'm even more annoyed by her. How the fuck are you going to distrust Parshmen and think them dangerous among the people but then lock yourself in a slave cage so that the slavers can't see your precious trunk, yet you'll send Parshmen in there to clean it.

Yeah that convo about intelligence sure was foreshadowing, huh
