More and more people seem to be having clearance issues for tire chains with their equipment. Compact tractor chains can be a great solution. They only require a couple inches of clearance vs most other equipment tire chains that require at least 4 inches of clearance.

V Bar Tractor Tire Chains are GREAT for Compact Tractors

V-bar reinforced tractor chains are a great solution for smaller tractors that need extra traction in harsh winter conditions. These chains have the v-bar cross chains, for extra traction. They are also 2-link spacing, meaning twice as many cross chains as regular tractor chains. Two link spacing means less cross chains falling down in between the lugs. This particular tractor tire chain is designed for Ag tires that are commonly found on 4WD compact utility tractors, and is currently available in 6 popular small tractor tire sizes. For many years, farmers have utilized adding liquids to their tractor tire to add weight. Ken Jones Tires Celebrating 80 Years in Business

Ken Jones Tires is celebrating it’s 80th year in business this year. Ken Jones Tires was founded in 1938 by my grandfather, Ken Jones, in a very different business landscape than today’s world. In fact, shortly after making the decision to start his own tire business, Ken was faced with the start of a war and a dilemma that could have shut his business down. The outbreak of World War II completely halted the manufacturing of all tires- imagine starting your own tire dealership only to not have any tires to sell! Ken and his team recapped tires 7 days a week during the war worked through one of the most difficult times faced by business. Those long hard hours of work greatly affected his principles for running a business. Honesty, and ‘going above and beyond’ for customer service became the pillars of Ken Jones Tires.

As the third generation of this business, my brothers Steve and Darren and I do not take this milestone lightly. Reaching 80 years in business is quite an accomplishment for any organization. Especially at a time when family owned “mom and pop shops” face fierce competition from big giant corporations- both online and off.

Adapting with the Times

This tire blog is a perfect example of how Ken Jones has adapted to our business environment. As one of the very first online sellers of specialty tires, we were looking for ways to help our customers solve their tire needs and make it easier to buy specialty tires online. My wife thought I was crazy when I told her I was going to blog about tires! “Who would ever read anything about tires,” she asked…

But our expert “tips of the trade” has become a cornerstone for reaching out to customers from all over the country and even internationally. This blog started as our first platform for sharing helpful advice based on real phone calls from our customers day in and day out. It’s that simple. Our Youtube Channel, Tractor Tires and Tire Chain Experts, began with me shooting videos right from my computer- just a few simple tips from someone you can actually pick up the phone and call.

Even the decision many years ago to focus on specialty tires for farm, lawn & garden and construction industries, was an intentional decision to fill a need for hard to find products that many tire dealers do not want to inventory.

Today’s business world looks nothing like it did in 1938, when customers did business through face to face relationships. Todays fast paced society means giving customers many different options and as easily as possible. That is why we still answer our phones ourselves- not just a customer service rep reading from a catalog. The types of tires we sell can be difficult to select without some expert guidance. Solid Shock

Solid Shock- What is it and How can it Affect Machine Operators?

Solid shock is the term used to describe the impact from G-Force vibration that is emitted to heavy industrial vehicle operators and their equipment from solid aperture tires. Solid shock can case damage to the equipment and discomfort and even harmful health affects to the machine operator.

What are Solid Aperture Tires?

Solid aperture tires are constructed of rubber all the way through. There is no air used to fill the tires and therefor no chance of the tire going flat. (Tires that use air as fill are referred to as pneumatic tires).Because there is no flexibility and because of the additional weight of these tires, it creates additional discomfort to the operator from the added vibration and can add significant strain on your equipment.

Solid Aperture Versus Foam Filled Tires

While some industries may have such harsh environments they may require solid tires, a great alternative for flatproofing tires without some of the negative impacts is to custom foam fill your tires. Custom flat proofing involves pumping a flat proofing polymer into the tire through it’s valve stem. It replaces all of the air and cures into a resilient, synthetic rubber core in 24 hours! It completely eliminates flats! 100%. While it does add some weight to the tire, it is less than solid tires and the foam fill does have flexibility which reduces the discomfort to the operator and damage to the machine.

After almost 80 years in business we have heard almost every question about tread designs out there- and we have watched as manufacturers have really developed more application designed tread styles. With so many options available, this has added to the confusion when buyers try to purchase lawn mower tires online.

Tire Inflation Safety

This is why you need to be very careful airing up your tires and why you shouldn’t air up a tire with cracks in the sidewall. Even a small wheelbarrow tire can take your finger off at minimum!

Inflating Tires with Cracked Sidewalls Can be Dangerous

Many people will call us asking for help when a tire will not inflate properly or hold air…they may question whether or not a tire tube can help.

Whether or not a tube can be used to extend the life of a tire depends on many different factors and the type of tire. For instance with trailer tires, a tube can be used for rim leaks but should never be used for any type of puncture, sidewall tear or crack, or even punctures in the tread. Lawn Mower Tires, which experience many small sidewall cracks due to UV exposure, can sometimes be repaired with a tube if the crack is small and the tread is still in good condition.

Safety First!

Before trying to add air to a damaged tire, visit the Rubber Manufacturers Website for their guidelines on Tire Repair. Always use caution while inflating any type of tire- even the smallest tire can cause serious injury, and the larger the tire, the more dangerous the inflation process can be. Always follow the manufacturers inflation guides and instructions. Many larger types of tractor and OTR tires should only be handled by a tire dealer or experienced operator.

Reducing Power Hop on Farm Tractors

  What is Power Hop on Farm Tractors

Power Hop is defined as the bouncing that can occur on both 4WD(Four Wheel Drive) and MFWD (Mechanical Front Wheel drive) tractors operating under draft loads. It can begin as a small vibration or bouncing motion but can escalate to the point of operator discomfort and even damage to the equipment. This problem is caused by the tire gaining traction as the sidewall of the tire flexes and recoils. It can result in uncontrollable bouncing of the tractors- which is not good for either the operator or the tractor itself.Power hop is sometimes confused with road lope- road lope usually develops at high speeds in road gear or when the tractor is not pulling any significant weight.

Tire Factors that can Lead to Power Hop

Radial or bias-plyconstruction of the tires, inflation pressure, load ratings, number of tires, and tire sizes all play a role in optimizing your tractor’s performance. An improper combination of any of these factors can lead not only to tractor hop, but also increased soil compaction, rolling resistance and premature tire wear or even failure.

Titan International released the results of their first planting study on Goodyear® Farm Tire Low Sidewall (LSW®) Technology™ as it affects yield and fuel consumption. Goodyear LSW Super Single tires were tested against Michelin standard duals in corn and soybean crops.

$16 per acre advantage with LSW Tires

Results from the corn harvest showed that the test plot with the Goodyear LSW Super Singles yielded 5 bushels more per acre compared to the Michelin duals.

5% Savings on Fuel Cost

Ken Jones Proudly Announces our New Website

When Ken Jones Tires first started selling our specialty tires, tire chains and tire tubes online back in 2009, we had one goal in mind- make it easy for people to find and buy hard to find tires.  Our dealers love being able to log in and get their wholesale pricing 24/7/365, and our retail customers tell us that our website is easy to use and find what you need. The reason we have kept our old website as long as we have is because of all the feedback we have received from our customers. Our goal is always to make it easy to find the products you need, and be there to help by phone or chat if you have questions.

So why update to the new site? Well, technology has changed quite a bit since we launched our first e-commerce website. With mobile use on the rise daily, we wanted a responsive website (a website that adjusts to any screen size) so that our mobile users could find what they need just as quickly as desktop users. Improvements in search functions and calculating freight/shipping costs are just two features we were really looking to improve on. We tried to keep what customers loved from our old site, and add these new features!
