The Importance of Yokohama Fenders in Marine Industry
The former and the initial way was to find a dead whale and use it as a large fender for bigger ships. But, after the Second World War, many started to find a better way, a more constant man-made equipment instead of a dead whale which had many downsides to it. Since rubber was thought to be a great material then, the most trusted rubber tire manufacturer in Japan ‘Yokohama’ was approached to come up with a design as a solution.
In the beginning, there were many complications, the first being the expenditure as it would be too costly to manufacture a fender using straight-up rubber. The then projected cost seemed unfeasible. The company eventually managed to come up with an innovative idea by using the principles of pneumatics. This curbed away the expenditure issue right away. Since Yokohama was the first manufacturing company of the pneumatic rubber fender, hence the name Yokohama Fender.
