Happy vacation (and graduation)!
This thing (all of it, not just the base in the photo) has been sitting in my garage since near the end of Mod 7. My family helped me drag it off campus in a rented truck from the Home Depot, which I lost the pictures of, but if I find them I'll post them. Today, my sister and I brought it down to the basement! It was about ten times more difficult that I anticipated (note the low ceiling over the stairs), and in turn I am ten times as proud of us for managing it all by ourselves. I can't wait to get it up and running again in its permanent home!

April 23, 2014—presentation day!
The presentation was a success! I'll post some slides from the powerpoint later, and if anyone took photos, please submit them here or email me! Thank you to everyone who came, or couldn't make it but expressed their support :)

Sunday, April 13 (belated update)
The carousel is in the Garthwaite! It took a good 45 minutes and more than a dozen friends, but we got the entire thing all the way from the Maintenance building to the Garth, into the art closet in the Integrated Studies room.
I would've taken a picture if I hadn't already been late for C-block by the time we finished. (I'll go back and get one later!)
It was an incredibly stressful move, with the whole thing about letting other people handle my work, but we did it!

Happy Spring Break!
I'll be back with updates on storage and preparing my presentation upon the arrival of mod 6.

Friday, March 14 (day 23 - the last day!)
The icing on the cake: the umbrella on the carousel! I took my own old CSW umbrella from home, and used pliers to twist the handle off, thus allowing it to sit nicely atop the pole.

Ta-da! But now it's disassembled into five parts (base, platform, ball bearings, umbrella and pole) and waiting to be moved into storage for the few weeks between now and my presentation on April 23rd.

Thursday, March 13 (day 22)
The rest of the railings are up, and today was a cleanup day.

I have a video too, but no way to post it at the moment... stay tuned!

The chairs are screwed on (and very, very well-secured)...

...as are two of the railings! I used screws and wood glue to keep them in place. (I also learned a neat trick about making wood damp before gluing it.)

At the end of the day:

The railings are assembled, but not yet attached to the platform.

Plus, my mom and I had an adventure at Walmart after school today, but wound up getting exactly what I needed: seats!

Here's what the workspace looked like at the end of today.

Much better! It looks and feels lovely, spins quite well, and the decorations start going on tomorrow!
My mom and I stopped by the Home Depot for the third (?) time this afternoon and bought what I need for the railings.

Jim and I cut the platform into an octagon (for both functional and aesthetic reasons):

(Above, we also see the new underside to the platform.)

It spins!!!
Today Jim and I finished off the bottom of the base...
Replaced the outer ring of the track...
Replaced the entire structure of the underside of the platform... (I don't have a picture for this one)
...And put it all together!

Tuesday, March 4 (day 15)
Two steps forward, four steps back.
With Jim's help, I got the other two oak boards attached under the base. But due the continued (though now lessened) warping, I had to remove part of the ball bearings' track, which tomorrow I will replace with something thinner--a quarter of an inch was not enough leeway between the balls and the track edges.

Monday, March 3 (day 14)
Today was the day of attempting to straighten out the warped base. Jim was so kind as to provide me with four oak boards like the one to the left of this photo, which I am screwing to the underside of the base (in the photo you can see me making pilot holes for the screws). I got two of four boards on by the end of the block.

The ball bearings are in the carousel!
Edit (3/10): here's a photo!

And it spins! It doesn't spin well, but it spins. Jim has been incredibly helpful in diagnosing the issues (where friction is forming) and making a plan to solve it--that's monday and tuesday's project.

Also, thank you to the two people who expressed interest in my gryphon design contest (as of noon on friday)! Anyone else interested? Email me! There's no commitment involved (yet).
