I think Chinese characters have a certain officialness to them. Probably this is due to China's self-cultivated image over the past few thousand years. But I think it's also due to the place of kanji in like, cyberpunk imagery, and in depictions of modernity generally. And to things like the fact that China is the only culturally non-European-descended state on the UN permanent security council, you know, it's one of the few such states that has been able to throw its weight around in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the other being Japan. And so Chinese characters have come to mean... internationality, officialness (as I said), seriousness in a certain sense. Alongside English.

That's really it, right. Everything in the whole world has two character sets on the back: Latin and Hanzi. And really, when you write in those two character sets, you are drawing on the imagery of probably the two most endurant officialities and sources of legitimacy in human history—the Chinese bureaucratic state and the Roman Empire (later, the Catholic church).

Well anyway. I have to admit that I appreciate it. Maybe as someone with anarchistic inclinations I should be revolted that two such ancient and arbitrary orders have continued to command such sway, even if indirectly, well into the twenty-first century. But at the same time I'm a little in awe, in awe of what we as humans can make. In awe that the Roman square capitals used to put SPQR on the Arch of Titus still command as much respect as they did in the first century AD, and in awe that Ming Hanzi command the same. In awe of typefaces, I guess, of the wonderful ability of humans to transmit symbolic culture, which in some sense has made us everything we are. And so on the back of every shampoo bottle and cereal box sit Latin and Hanzi, next to each other in our era for the first time in earnest. There because they can put themselves there, because they can demand to be there. Parasitic symbols that have lodged themselves in ten billion human minds and refuse to let go. What wonderful little species they are; like nematodes, in every nook and cranny.

It's all really quite amazing, isn't it?
