I resonated very strongly with your observation. In several of my experiences, after I move, I notice my close female friends gradually grow distant, even when I really try to keep those bonds alive. When we’re not physically near each other, the tight knit bond fades. I think what pulls us apart is that we’re no longer creating new shared experiences, living things together. I’m a good listener and someone who wants to know the small details going on in my friends’ lives, but often it feels like they either don’t want to “bother” with sharing, or just don’t open up anymore. I preserve their spot in my life because I feel like new people can’t replace the connection we had, but they don’t always do the same. One facetimes me but barely shares anything. Another visited me and kept things surface-level, even when I tried to ask more. I give up because I don’t want to pry or come across as prying. Others suggest we schedule calls and catch up but never follow through, and eventually, I let it go. I know they’re busy with what’s right in front of them (makes sense, why prioritize someone you’re not even sure you’ll see again?) and I am as well and I try not to take it personally, but it still stings sometimes.

Interestingly, I’ve found male friendships to be easier in comparison. We can go months without talking and still catch up like nothing changed. They usually tell me what’s been going on without me having to ask much, and they don’t treat me or make me feel like I’ve become a distant memory just because we haven’t seen each other in a while or haven’t been in touch. We both understand our lives move in separate orbits, but there’s always space to come back. They seem to still carry me with them even from afar, just as I do. I know it’s not about gender, but the pattern has been hard to ignore. So your observation really hit home.

As for the prediction, funnily enough, he’s just like me. I don’t tan easily either, I get sunburned first. Maybe he and I will be sharing my sun routine.
