BTS Facts: The Next Prince EP. 1

After my last post, I've returned to share some more behind-the-scenes information about the making of the series!

It's been super fun to put these two posts together: 1. because I love learning more about the production side of things, and 2. because it's amazing to see the amount of time, effort, and care that was put into even the smallest details of the show.

Names

Khanin uses the name "Kenneth" while in London for a few different reasons. The first is that the scriptwriters felt that it might be difficult for foreigners to pronounce the name Khanin, so they wanted to come up with an alternative name that could be used while living abroad.

The second (and main reason) is to protect Khanin's identity- Tatdanai felt that using his original name would be too obvious and make Khanin too easy to find, so he uses the name Kenneth instead.

Pronunciation and Linguistics

P'Den (who is the series' co-director alongside P'Aof) asked Nunew to speak with an RP (Received Pronunciation)/King's English accent.

This is because Nunew's character would have lived in London and have gone to fancy schools. In addition, upon returning to Emmaly, he would have had "the accent suitable for his royal status."

This is slightly based off of the background of the late King of Thailand (Bhumibol Adulyadej), who was raised in Switzerland and also taught to speak with a RP accent.

To prepare, Nunew took a three-hour class to learn the phonology of the language, before reviewing everything again on set.

Charan's Action Scene

P'Aof wanted Charan to have a "cool" debut, so he chose to include an action scene near the opening.

The scene took two days to create: one day to rehearse, and another full day (from 6 am to 6 pm) to film.

Aside from blocking, one of the reasons why it took so long was that the camera crew needed to practice using the equipment.

The scene was shot using a robot arm called the "Bolt," which is rarely used to film series (likely because the equipment is very expensive- just the smaller version of it can cost up to/over $3,500 to rent per day).

The arm can move in 6/7 different axis, with speeds up to 12 meters per second, which allows it to make very precise movements.

Locations and Set Design

The production company rented out a large location in order to make the fencing scene look as realistic as possible. Just the location alone cost half a million baht, and the cost of putting all the extra details in the background together likely pushed it to a million.

The production crew also created the graveyard in the flashback scene entirely from scratch- using an empty field that they filled with fake headstones and flowers.

Other Minor Details

CG was used on the King to remove wrinkles and change his hair color in order to make him look younger during the flashback scene

Nunew was taught to learn how to play the piano for the show (one of several skills that he learned)

No stock footage was used to film the scenes set in London (the team over there used the same type of camera and/or lenses to make sure everything felt [visually] the same)

If you've read the books, you'll know that the first episode contains many specific lines/references to the original source material. A phrase that appears in both is the idea of cicadas shedding their skin/coming out of their shell. Once of the writers of the books, Ennice has explained that this is partially in reference to a specific strategy from Sun Tzu's Art of War.

i simply need everyone to understand that i am tired all of the time. literally at all moments. if i ever go somewhere and do something, it is not because i am somehow full of energy, but instead that i have carefully stored up all of my little bits of energy like a dragon collecting jewels, and am now vaporizing them all at once

I want to tell a story to the artists and would-be artists out there.

When I was 19, I made a large oil painting of the nerd I would eventually marry. I poured all my attention and care into this painting. It's the only art I have from back then that still holds up as a work I'm proud of today.

I entered it into a judged show at the local art center. It got an honorable mention. I went to see the show with my beloved model. One of the judges came up to talk to me, and highlighted that all the judges really liked the painting. It would have placed, except, you see, the feet were incorrect. They were too wide and short, and if I just studied a bit more anatomy-

I called over my future wife, and asked her to take off her shoe. Being already very used to humoring me, she did. The judge looked at her very short, very wide little foot. Exactly as I'd lovingly rendered it. I would never edit her appearance in any way.

The judge looked me in the eye, and to his credit, he really looked like he meant it when he said "Oh I'm so sorry."

Anyways the moral of the story is that all of those anatomy books that teach you proportions are either showing you averages, or a very specific idea of an idealized body. Actual bodies are much more varied than that.

So don't forget to draw from observation, and remember that humans aren't mass produced mannequins. Delight in our variation. Because it's supposed to be there.

I think GMMTV is trying like hell to hide how broad Phuwin's shoulders are, because holy shit, he is one broad-shouldered gentleman. Like, classic triangle build right there.

And look, it's absolutely BONKERS because just let Phuwin's characters be broader than Pond's. Who fucking cares? Let Phuwin's large adult man shoulders come out to play, please. For the love of all that is holy.

I know there will be people complaining about the English in various shows, because there always are, and if it bothers you, it bothers you. But my personal philosophy is that as long as Hollywood is making 200 million dollar films that can't be arsed to get Asian languages remotely correct, I have zero problem with Asian countries saying, "meh, that's the best you native English speakers are gonna get".
