All of which I’ll be discussing on the blog, but there are a lot of ideas out there that I haven’t tried, and part of keeping my journal and this blog is all about finding what works and doesn’t work.  So I’ll give them all a try and let you know how they work for me.  Consider me the “Consumer Reports” of ulcers.

The discovery of Helicobacter pylori bacteria in the 80s led to the conclusion that most peptic ulcers are caused by a bacterial infection.  The discovery even earned a Nobel Prize in 2005.

It’s not normal to get an open sore by eating a tomato.  Instead of removing it from our diet, we should be finding out why the juice in a tomato would do that to certain people.

So when it comes to experimenting and testing different products and treatments, I don’t have to wait for months to move to a new one and get results.  I can go directly from one to another.

Meeting with the urologist in a follow up later on, he gave me some suggestions to keep this from happening again.  One of his suggestions was to drink orange juice every morning.  Evidently there are citrins (that’s the word he used) in OJ that keep the calcium in the kidneys from collecting and forming stones.

I certainly won’t argue with science.  However, I will say that I tried an SLS-free toothpaste once and didn’t see any difference at all.  I looked high and low for a toothpaste that didn’t have it and at the time there wasn’t much to go by.  I wound up using a Tom’s natural toothpaste.  For me anyway, the ulcers continued unabated.

My latest round of ulcers has seemingly cleared up – thankfully – and I can give the full report on the last experiment with Aphthasol.  The “too long, didn’t read” version…

There’s no shortage of products out there to help out the canker sore sufferer (even if there is a dearth of canker sore blogs).  But some work better than others, and some are right for different kinds of breakouts.  Here are my top 5:

According to an article from the Health and Med Blog, and quoting a Professor Anant Paradkar who has researched propolis for years, “Propolis has been shown to be anti-microbial, anti-fungal, a strong anti-oxidant, non-allergenic and can boost the immune system. It also promotes wound healing and has anesthetic properties.”

I posted on Monday that I was experimenting with a product called Debacterol, which was a sulfuric acid solution that supposedly cauterized the ulcer and helped it heal faster.

the moment and a job that is still reeling and adjusting from yet another round of layoffs.  If there was ever a time for me to experiment with the “stress = canker sores” theory, this would be it.

Then there’s the wealth of knowledge out there about the effect stress plays in our immune system. And canker sores being an auto-immune response… there may be something to this.

the setting up of the site here at Cankerboy headquarters, I haven’t had a chance to fill people in on the current tests going on in the laboratory.  (The laboratory being my mouth.)

People with vitamin B12 deficiencies experience a multitude of problems, including fatigue and depression at even slightly lower than normal levels, and even mania and psychosis at severe levels.  It’s also associated with a form of anemia.

It’s practically my personal mantra at this point.  In fact, if there was one single myth I want to bust more than any other with this website, it’s this one.

Many believe that the abrasiveness in SLS helps to bring about canker sores in people who are susceptible to them.  Luckily, there are several manufacturers out there who have created natural and SLS-Free toothpastes just for us.
