CH. 11 Fieldwork: The Biography of a Chocolate Bar
The main inegreduents of a Snicker bar consists of milk chocolate (sugar, cocoa butter, chocolate, skim milk, lactose, milkfat, soy lecithin, artificial flavor), peanuts, corn syrup, sugar, palm oil, skim milk, lactose, salt, egg whites, artificial flavor. The bars are made by an American company named Mars, Inc. However, ingredients like sugar comes from Brazil, Cocoa from Guyana, Vanilla from Mexico and milk from a Wisconsin, just to name a few. More than 65% of America’s best selling candy is made in Texas’s at a large plant called Mars Wrigley confectionary, including Skittles and Starbursts. The company, Mars, has a reputation of being elusive when it comes to sharing the experience of workers, so no one really knows what’s its like wirjing there by but about 3 years ago, they started targeting college students to work for them. This is how producers to their cocoa to the market: “To get its message out, Mars is doubling the staff dedicated to luring college students, deploying social media, and honing its sales pitch to woo potential candidates. That often means showering them with M&Ms, and handing out gift boxes stuffed with candy bars and snacks.” Any other way would be shipments made from out the country and sent into the manufacturing plant in Texas. Biggest chocolate trade companies are Mars Wrigley, Ferraro Group, Mondelez, and Meiji Co Ltd. The Food and Dryg Administration regulates the trade. Snickers are prmotited in a way influences you to eat then a lot, targeted towards a younger audience or any audience interested in sports, media etc. I bought my snicker at Target. For more ordinary chocolate, expect to charge around $7 to $10 per pound. If you add special occasion packaging, tack on an additional 10% to the price. As a storeowner, you will enjoy profit margins between 55 to 75%. The prices of these commodities are driven, for the most part, by the commodities market, which sets the price based on supply and demand levels and can result in varying levels of volatility on commodity prices. Overall, the greatest price factor is the cost of cocoa.

Out of the entire commercial break, I’d say that a little less than half of them were targeted for boys. If they were, the topic of the commercial had to do with something we know as masculine: such as riding a bike, having a nerf war, going on adventures, dressing up as a superhero, etc. On the other hand, a majority of the commercials playing were geared towards young girls. Many of the repeated topics included the color pink, babies, dresses, hair, makeup, etc. Some examples of the techniques I think these ads used: specific words or phrases, usage of certain colors, images of either a boy or girl doing a certain activity. These ads are teaching gendered behavior because they influence girls to stay inside all day and play with dolls, do makeup, and the importance of knowing and having kitchen appliances. Typically that is what young girls are drawn to, but the other percentage who enjoy more “boyish” activities, like bike riding or playing sports are left out. The ads influences boys to be wild and have fun with no regrets. They influence boys to able be strong and mighty and never vulnerable. It is not natural to say boys will be boys, although it has become very normalizaed. That saying implies that girls cannot be girls and that boys will always have an excuse or justification as why they do what they do. It is a blatant double standard that will probably never be reversed.

All of the ancestors and family members shown above are from my father, Christopher Graham’s side of the family. I do not have that close of a connection with my fathers side, however I was recently made aware of how many people are in my family line, which are probably thousands. Me, Khaylah Graham, is s direct descendant of all of his ancestors. I do not have confirmation of where exactly these family members were born. Most of them have a distinct look, long, slim noses, slim faces, thick eyebrows, small eyes, fine hair. As the ancestry grew, the names of meme era started to change, and so did the looks of my family. Noses began to get wider, hair was thicker, etc. I know that in the early stages someone’s and children with a white man, and they as things grew more recent, it was more African American men and Native American men/women. My personal view of ethicnity definitely includes a sense of pride and belonging, since I see myself in my great great great great grandmother (1st picture). Some of the name of ancestors were reused for my fathers family members that I know today. It’s very interesting to see how it started and continues to grow. Realizing I have this much family and it’s only from my fathers side Is astonishing.

CHAPTER 3 FIELDWORK
 10/4/2020
1.Above is a map of one of my favorite sections/blocks in NYC, specifically in the neighborhood of Soho. (Prince St at Broadway, Spring St at Greene St,and Mercer Street Broome St) The reason I chose this specific location is because it is home to some of my favorite stores/stores I frequent when I visit. Some of these stores include, as shown on the map, Sephora, The Vintage Twin, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Stuart Weitzman, Zara, Saint Laurent, etc. When in this area, I find lots of boutiques and lofts, cobblestone roads, small eateries and cafes. People in this area are very artsy and sophisticated. The nightlife is full high-end restaurants and art galleries.
2. Some observations that I’ve seen now that I haven’t noticed before includes:
-how Broadway is a major street that connects all the other streets
-how certain stores can be located on two streets at simultaneously.
3. The train station(s) that are in the area. After looking at the same block on Google Maps, there are at least three significant subway/train stations, Spring St Subway, Broadway- Lafayette Street Station, and Canal St Station.
4. I know that all the boutiques and flagship stores in the area have limited capacity for the amount of shoppers they allow in the store at a time, and also that they require masks to enter.

I learned a lot about the value of the things I need versus the things I want. The items I want tend to be more expensive but really have no tangible use in my everyday life. The items I want are more of collectors items, a source of instant gratification. The items I need are usually not as much in costs, last longer, and have more use. I learned the importance of providing myself with what has longevity rather than instant satisfaction.

Introduction to Anthropology: Ch. 1 Fieldwork
The iron, also known as the clothing iron, has roots dating back to 400 BC. The Ancient Greeks would heat up a round metal bar and use it to create pleats on robes. The Ancient Romans invented something very similar to the iron; it was a metal paddle heated by flames that would be pounded onto clothes to get rid of wrinkles. Ancient Chinese folk used heated spoon-like tools and sand to buff out any imperfections within garments. The first more modern clothing iron appeared in the 1300s in Europe, simply a metal slab connected to a handle. About two centuries later, an improvement evolved, allowing stones and coals to be put inside the iron, and removed the worry of staining clothes, because iron was starting to be used. Over the years, iros have expanded to being  box irons to  gas irons to steam irons, and eventually to electric irons. The first electric iron was invented by Henry Steele in the 1880s.
My item is a Black + Decker iron and it is made and manufactured in both the United States and China.
This item has helped me to look presentable and keep all my clothing looking neat and clean.
Black and Decker Inc. is a fortune 500 company that handles manufacturing for Black + Decker products. The company owns ten manufacturing plants in China. According to niche.com, that provided an analysis of the work environment, benefits, pay, culture, management, and growth opportunities, most if not all of the feedback is positive. For example, 71% of employees say hours are flexible, 86% of employees say the workplace runs efficiently, 71% agree that there is room for promotion, 71% agree that management cares about employees,  86% of employees say paid time off is excellent. This is all data taken from Black + Decker headquarters in New Britain, CT.
