What little she knows
I observed a pregnant student in the grocery store. I asked her a few questions but mainly, if she was staying on campus, and how was she delivering her baby? As it turns out, the young girl knew nothing of family housing. She stated that she would return home to her parents to have the child, because at the time she thought THAT was the only option for her. Had she known about family housing she would have applied for it. I’m sure she won’t return to college. I asked her what her plans were after giving birth. She replied.” I have to find a job” no mention of college.

I believe that not enough people know about the obstacles parents have to face living on campus while trying to obtain a college degree, let alone single parents. It’s extremely difficult and somewhat frustrating. While everyone else is focusing on classes, building their resumes, and getting involved in extra-curricular activities on campus, a single parent has more duties then these. We have to take care of our kid(s), physically, financially, etc. One thing I can say about being a single parent and still pursuing my career is that I’m motivated even more to succeed. I’m building a future for me and my little one.

I decided to base my ethnographic research on the challenges of single parents living on campus. This research hits home for me since I myself am a single parent and also live on campus. There are many struggles that I and many other single parents on campus have to face. This being said, I would like to shed light on this matter
