I’d like to share with you this pack that I’ve created for my ESL students. This specific group is a Starters level and they’re between 9 and 11 years old. The pack has got a grammar theory reference, some activities with their answer key, a board game and a pack of study cards.
I use the study cards as a memory game, where students have to match the image with its sentence. This activity is very useful for students to understand the difference between the singular ‘this is’ and the plural ‘these are’. While they’re playing and having fun, they start correcting each other and explaining to other classmates why they can’t get ‘a pair’ if you only have got an object and the sentence states ‘these are’. I’ve used this memory game with 7 to 8 year-old students as well, by simply using one concept at a time: either distance or number, but never both at the same time.
The deck of study cards also allows other type of activities: students can take an image card without looking, say the sentence out loud and then write it on their notebook; or students take a sentence card without looking and then they draw the right image on their notebook.
The board game is very simple, but it entails and added challenge: students won’t have any sentence to look at, only the image reference. Will they be able to produce the whole sentence from scratch? This activity can be used to close this topic and check if everything has been understood. I usually tell my students that if they say the sentence, they stay on their spot, but if they get it wrong, they must return to the start. If this is too discouraging, you can tell them to go back 2 positions.
