“Smartass.” It’s muttered under her breath, only half serious as she cleared her throat. “Some hiker tried to tell me they were from that mess, once. I looked at them and said, sweetie, you can shove your lies right up your ass.” One glance over her shoulder, a glimpse at the dress itself. “It was popular ten years ago. That weird pea green” — baby shit, more like — “is going to make a comeback. I can feel it in my bones.” Beat. “You should try it on. You always wore that sort of thing better than me.”
Tumblr media
Kieran smirked at Anja’s comment, tipping her head in her sister’s direction, “thank you,” she swiped a finger across the screen, highlighting a note she wanted to change before glancing up, “And how they take that? Maybe we should be drinking a bit more Kool-aid.” Deadpanned as she sat up a bit on the bed, plush comforter crinkling slight when she did so. Anja was one of the few people she felt comfortable enough with to communicate her own disillusionment with their home, but even then, it was never exactly an open conversation. Even with her sister as Director of their zone, there were ears everywhere. Always.
“Fuck off,” she tossed the dress back at Anja, snickering. “I’d be happy if this,” she gestured at the offending dress, “and that canary yellow never made a comeback. I saw a woman in it head to toe the other day. Almost blinded me, I swear. I’ll take this one, though,” she tugged at a navy sweater she was almost certain her sister wasn’t intending to give away but held the article of clothing aloft anyway, cashmere soft in her hands.

KIERAN WAS ALWAYS A WELCOMED DISTRACTION. Stasi was fond of the so called first family even if that was problematic in, and of itself sometimes. A long sigh would push past lips, as if she were relieved about the dissolution of the conversation that had been taking place before she had been saved from it. “We’re drinking to you being right.” The edge of a grin practically peels the corner of her mouth back, it’s been waiting like a predator for prey. “Unless of course.” She picks up her own glass in a mock salute but does not drink. “You have a better idea you’ve come to share with the rest of us.”
Tumblr media
Kieran cast her gaze from Stasi to Tony and wrinkled her nose, “that there’s no point arguing with you? I’ll happily drink to that.” Said with a flourish of her hand to waive the bartender over with more shots since she’d just down Tony’s. Swiveling slightly in her seat, the researcher shook her head, “no, no, I wouldn’t dare add to a debate that I see has only just ended. We can start a new one if you prefer, like why the elevators are requiring two forms of identification if you’re riding solo now? I guess only suspicious people ride elevators by themselves?” She shrugged, taking one of the three new shots brought over by the bartender. If Kieran had to guess, however, she imagined it was to be able to better track the coming and goings of employees from specific departments. Likely archives, where the artifacts in recent memos had likely been taken from.

THE EXAGGERATION IN HER NOD IS A SIMPLE INDICATION to her passion, the way that she feels that she is right in the argument at hand. Well, if you can even call it that, at least. There is another one, for good measure, under fingers brush across the top of the bar, grinning flirting with the corner of her mouth but not yet allowed to blossom entirely. “All I’m saying, is that we aren’t as different as you like to think we are. Now, just give it up, and say you’ll drink to that.” Everyone had their vices, she just so happened to like sharing hers.
Tumblr media
Kieran caught the tail end of whatever debate Stasi was having with someone at the bar, snaking in between the two individuals as she shrugged off her coat. “Don’t try to argue with her, you won’t win,” she advised the other before flashing a smile at both them and Vinh, “what are we drinking to?” the researcher had already grabbed the shot closest to her, lifting it to whatever the toast was and knocking it back with a grimace. At least alcohol was more or less consistent across zones. Which was fascinating in and of itself to Kieran but not something she dwelled on right now.

“Come on, Kieran.” Anja is tear through her own closet. Tearing through clothes, trying to determine what to keep and what to donate. Will she still wear it? Does she still have anything she doesn’t wear to work? Does she really need something that isn’t a pantsuit or sheath dress? One such item is haphazardly tossed over shoulder, unintentionally aimed right at her sister’s head. “These people may all act as if they’re innocent and sweet and they know what is happening, but I refuse to believe they can’t handle something more. A little Kool-aid wouldn’t kill them.” Pause. “…You do get that reference, right?”
Tumblr media
Kieran lay on her sister’s bed, proof reading a line in the report she’d spent all week writing while Anja went on about her clothes. The silk dress tossed at her head was what prompted her to look at her sister at all, rolling her eyes at the question. “No, explain it to me,” she deadpanned, inspecting the dress with a wrinkled nose. “Please tell me you haven’t worn this?” The color was...well, “awful” was putting it nicely.

bad habits were so much easier to form than good ones. staying up late, staying after hours in the office, were steadily becoming some of those bad habits (but it was better than others, he supposed). the self-appointed challenge was forever to get his e-mails down below a certain threshold before he punched out for the night and severin was determined to do it at least once. just to say that he did. pride was a hell of a thing. so it was really no wonder when he got visitors this late into the hour. whether it be the lights still lit on this floor or the faint melody of music that poured outward —or maybe someone really just needed hr for something and it just couldn’t wait until the morning … who knew. either way, he called for his visitor to come in while his eyes never left his screen, fingers never leaving the keyboard.
their dance was rhythmic, something mesmerizing as they dashed across the keys and paragraphs appeared. signatures, greetings (however tonally bored they sounded —and they were) or whatever correspondence was needed. when he finally flicked his gaze to the doorway he felt his stomach tighten, though outwardly there was no change in expression. her. the odd familiarity through chance alone was like a sucker punch but with all that he knew … at least he knew better.
“ it’s a little late for a trip to human resources, don’t you think? ” and yet severin was still there. he couldn’t talk. still, he typed away at his e-mail and paused only to mull over phrasing before continuing on. “ come in, then. sit. give me two seconds. ”

The good thing about CHQS, regardless of Zone, was that even though there were normal office hours, there was always someone working somewhere in the building. She herself hadn’t even noticed the hour when she stopped her pacing around the office she’d been occupying, and only when she looked outside did she see that evening had begun to fall. Oops. Kieran still had a bit to go but found that when she settled back in her chair, she could only swivel in it restlessly.
It was the reason (one of them, anyway) why, she found herself making the familiar trek down to HR. If anyone was working late, she imagined it’d be him. There were a few offices with light streaming out from beneath the door as she walked down the increasingly familiar hallways and taking the elevator down several floors before it opened to HR. Humming to herself, Kieran tucked her hands into one of the many sets of pockets in her Z1 jacket, they really did love pockets here, until she stopped short at the doorframe of the open office. Light emanated from his computer, casting a glow on a concentrated face and she wasn’t sure he even registered her presence between the music playing and his work.
“Oh, this is HR? Could’ve sworn I’d walked into a club.” Small smile tugged at the corner of Kieran’s lips as she accepted the invitation, flopping into the seat opposite his desk.

Open: Zone 3, CHQ Employee Lounge
Soft sounds seem to emanate vaguely through the corner of the small lounge, the source hidden under floppy, loose curls. Thin cords fall from their ears to a small device tucked tight into their hand. Kincade stares through the large window into the too-bright sky, sitting still as a rock except for the flipping of the small item in their hand. The cords twist round and round, though they seem not to notice. On the small table in front of them sits a poorly-built sandwich with one bite taken out of it and a cup of heavily-creamed coffee with a thin film on it. The sound pauses for a moment and then resumes again, louder than before, but Kincade seemingly has no reactions.
Tumblr media
“Earth to Kincade,” Kieran repeated for what was the third time as she finally glanced up from her notebook. She couldn’t blame him for his lack of response, given that she herself had been guilty of zoning out on more than one occasion but she did wave her pen in his direction for a second, as if to garner his attention. “Are you here now?” She prodded gently, soft smile on her lips as she poked her friend’s side with the aforementioned pen, wondering if that would get his attention. She took a sip of her own coffee, black because they’d run out of sugar and she was desperate enough for a caffeine fix that she’d taken her chance on black, “or will you be returning to the land of the living anytime soon?” Said as though he could hear her at all.

KIERAN FREY ZONE 3 RESEARCHER
Tumblr media
NAME: Kieran Frey AGE: 37 PRONOUNS: She/Her ZONE OF ORIGIN: Zone 3 STATUS: Zone 3 Researcher TRAITS: + Analytical, Curious, Intelligent | – Abrupt, Proud, Sarcastic
BIO
car accident tw / child death tw
Kieran was born in Amstelland to a previously nomadic family who settled into their new lives in a beautiful city.
She grew up a curious child, and though her parents weren’t terribly old when she was born, with a sister 15 years her senior, they weren’t exactly spring chickens either. She was a handful, constantly asking questions, constantly seeking out knowledge.
Kieran was never disobedient for the sake of it, but for the sake of discovery, of learning something new and pushing the limits wherever she could. She was always fascinated by the why of what people did, rather than the how. The reason behind the action. The driving forces behind anything.
As she grew older, it was clear that she had an aptitude for learning and discovery, and these interests and drive had her on an accelerated course of study. She was grateful her sister took center stage, so that she could be more or less free to live her own life, without any expectation.
She was 19 when an unplanned pregnancy put her plans to travel to Austria, where her family was from, on hold. But as was the Zone 3 motto – everything had a silver lining and her son James was hers.
Being a single mother wasn’t something that had been in the books but her family helped and she continued on her career path, getting a job at CHQS where she began as a junior researcher, starting with a focus on Zone 3.
Between being a mother and a demanding job, Kieran fell into a pattern of work and home life, her own interests beyond the two put on hold.
She was 25 when her entire world was upended. There was a car accident, a moment of distraction on the part of another driver, that left Kieran in the hospital with all the best care, and her six year old son, six feet under.
Things like this rarely happened in Amstelland. But, at least there was always a silver lining, or so people kept telling her. Grief was alright, but being stuck in it was not. The end of life was a reason to celebrate what was, not mourn what would never be. People kept telling her that her silver lining was that she was alive! That there were new signs and regulations set up where the accident had occurred –- so it would never happen to anyone else again. Everything has a silver lining.
She resisted the thought until she resented it. Until she couldn’t help but look around Amstelland and question what she saw there. It wasn’t natural to move on so easily. To find happiness where there was none. But in a place where her son’s death was met with a party to celebrate his young life, rather than a funeral to mourn it...she didn’t think she could say anything, she was trapped in a world that didn’t want her to vocalize her grief beyond the allotted time they deemed appropriate.
So she swallowed it when she was expected to and for two years did her best to get back into the swing of things, clawing her way back to a sense of normalcy. Needing desperately to feel normal again.
She began to do research across Zones, collecting data and studies to help those at Zone 3′s CHQS gain a better understanding of the other Zones. Travel helped her more than she thought possible and she’d spend extended periods of time in other Zones conducting her research. Normal eventually came to her, though it took time.
As the years have gone by, Kieran has returned to herself, rising to become one of Zone 3′s head researchers. She semi-resents the fact that her older sister casts a long shadow and knows that people think her job and any opportunities she’s had are a result of her sister’s position, rather than her own merit.
This pushes her to work harder to show that she can contribute more, not just because of who her sister is.
It’s been almost 20 years since she started with CHQS. Kieran believes in her work, and believes that by understanding other Zones, everyone will be safer and better equipped to go survive during their travels.
HEADCANONS
Always carries a small notebook and pen on her person to scribble notes, observations and reminders she forgets to look at.
She’s an early riser and subsists on coffee and muffins.
She believes there are other Zones out there and has only recently begun to compile additional data to support that theory. Previously, she was working more towards the study of each Zone but after years of conducting said research, she’s interested in a change.
Fascinated by experts in other Zones and often takes time to interview them on seemingly unrelated topics to Zone study but believes everything is tied together.
Wants to travel to Zone 0 for study but knows that would never be allowed.
Food between Zone never ceases to amaze her, and she’s found favorites from each she enjoys when she travels to them. Music between Zones also fascinates her, and how it affects people differently, along with the similarities between the Zones’ genres.
She’s got a tattoo of her son’s birthday on her ribcage. She doesn’t talk about him with anyone, but she still dreams of him, still sometimes wakes with tears in her eyes. Time does heal, however slowly, but the past twelve years since his death have taken her on a journey she wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Despite being very analytical, which can sometimes maker her seem distant, she has a deep sense of compassion, it just takes a while for her to feel comfortable enough to show it.
