Artist Statement!

My name is Kiana Pijuan, I am 17 years old and I live In New York! I am a rising senior at Alfred E. Smith CTE high school where I study the trade Graphic Design. Some of my interests are listening to music, art, reading, and playing video games. I’m passionate about art and creating it, to the point where I want to pursue it as a career in the future. I was always interested in art since I was younger always trying different things. However, I had stopped or had taken a break from doing art until the 7th to 8th grade in middle school. At that time I started taking art more seriously. When I got to high school art was a definite path always trying to find new ways to expand my knowledge and skills, always experimenting with different art mediums and techniques so I can be able to try many things and be successful in my future art career.I am an honor student who has been on the principle list multiple times however my two of my biggest achievements are getting accepted to the Parson’s Pre-College Program and being able to take many different art courses and me new people and improve on my art skills is a cool thing. The other cool achievement that I have is being a certified graphic designer, I had to take a G1 exam for graphic design students, which I had passed!

My subject for my Zine was based on Comic books and Comic book-related things and you can say the history of comic books and how it grew. Comic books had always had an interest in me I use to read comic strips when I was younger and one of the things I grew up with was related to superhero/ or comic-related things. Whether it be video games, movies, shows, action figures, and comic books, (which my dad had tons of). And I love reading so, of course, I’m going to be interested in the compelling stories and illustrations that comic books have to tell. Comic books are one of the main things I’ve been reading as a past time thing for this summer. For my design concept, I used a basic color theme of white, black, yellow, red, and blue as they are the main colors you see in comic books. For my type, I used some basic comic book style type to give it a more comic book aesthetic. For both the imagery and story it is both cohesive with the topic for each page. For example, the story is basically the history of research of how comic books first originated, and when the first one was released  (which would be the topic and I have given you the information about it in the text or “story”). And the imagery would be a few images of the first comics that were ever released to coincide with both the topic and the text of the topic. And then I would find a background that would match the topic, text, and image to make it fit perfectly.
